Course Description

Why should I learn music theory? Isn't it just "theoretical" knowledge that I won't really use? Nothing could be further from the truth! Music theory also has many practical applications. A musician who has studied music theory has a huge advantage over a musician who has not. Not only will they read music more fluently, their performances will be more musical because they will understand the various elements of music and how all the parts work together. Song writers and composers with a background in music theory will also have a huge advantage over those without such a background. In fact, for those who want to write music, there is nothing more important thanhaving a firm understanding of music theory.

This is clearly a very good course on this topic. I have also enrolled other music theory courses with 4-5-6, 7-8-9 etc kind of long bundles; but none of them were as clear and result-oriented as this one. I am not a complete beginner and I already had an upper-intermediate level of music theory knowledge; but this one was somehow very fruitul for me too. Congrats Jonathan! I will be following your composition courses as well.

I learned so much! I was a complete noob and I feel fairly confident about my understanding of the basics of music theory and notations. The course was well structured, the concepts were clearly explained and the quizzes were really helpful in driving home the key points of the section.
I can't wait to get started on the sequel to this course (Composition Part 1)
Thank you! <3

I have to read through entire pages and it's cluttering up my mind! As a music student, i would prefer a better, more engaging experience.

Simple, direct, and easy to follow. The material builds gradually upon past lessons and the abundance of in-course resources (handouts, quizzes, exercises) allows ample opportunities to practice. Couldn't be more satisfied.

Unexpectedly rigorous and accurate; exposed concisely and straight forward. But lacking important examples that show how these concepts "feel" to the ear. That's the point of the video, to use media to help comunicate. Otherwise it's better to just read the information in a pdf. So talking about reciting tone and without a single example, it's a shame.

Yes, I needed a review because the first book on theory (not by Peters) I read was not sufficient for my purposes. This course should have been my first choice.

What I like most about this course is that the instructor refrains from rambling or using word whiskers such as umm or uhhh. He also gets to the point in his explanations and doesn't add in needless things while he does add in historical reference when appropriate to the subject.

excellent course, straight to the point. am learning easily without any previous knowledge in music. all his clips are 1 min long :)

I like the course. However I wish more of the documents were converted into videos so as to have both types for a lecture. I also wish there were more exercises (especially in the latter sections) with more variety and real world examples of the concepts being explored. For instance, having students listen to short recordings of pieces and having them transcribe what they hear would be beneficial for learning about rhythm and meter. Overall, Ive learned quite a lot and filled in some gaps in my theory knowledge but I feel like there is more to music theory than just whats explained in this course. I wonder if theres a Theory II or III course from this instructor that explores more advanced topics. Thank you.

At first, I was a little skeptical after watching a couple of preview videos. I thought it would be dull and boring. Oh boy, I was wrong! Now, I am not saying you're going to have your socks knocked off. You're not watching a comedian. You are watching short with very critical and well put information made by a quality professor. Respect to this educator!

Very good - quizzes are very good : I've learnt a great deal - The information is presented in a very clear uncluttered way

By Stefano Guidone on 4/27/2020

Very concise and direct, right at the point without too much distractions. These videos taught me clearly what otherwise would be a complex ensemble of notions to memorise...hardly possible that way.
I really like the side notes from history and maths, giving more context to the sole musical concepts. Thank you for this course!
