This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take music theory (or music interest)and turn it intoa usable skill. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.
For years I've been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I'm making for Udemy use the same syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory - and cost shouldn't be a barrier.
My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understandingwhychords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you've tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out - this series of courses is the perfect fit.
Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017the Star Tribune featured him as a "Mover and a Shaker," and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.

This is a good course for those wanting to delve into beginning music theory studies. I'm learning piano and guitar and wanted to supplement that with some theory which has helped my understanding for sure. The course is taught in a very relaxed manner which suits some learning styles, though I feel that because of this the course could have been condensed and taught in less time if the lesson contents were slightly more defined and prepped. I haven't taken any other theory course so can't compare it properly. This isn't meant to sound negative, I did enjoy the course and would recommend it. I have signed up to the next course in the series and looking forward to starting it.

I have learned a lot in this course step by step. I highly recommend this course for beginners that want to learn music theory in detail. What we paid for is definitely worth it !

This is the first time I got into Music Theory and I was finally able to without any difficulty! Jason is an excellent educator who would do his best to explain the tough Music Theory concepts in layman's terms. But the best thing about him is that - he replies to all of my questions regarding the subject! He is very hands-on! I am very happy choosing this course with him as the instructor! Way worth the price!

quite thorough for a starting level, brain a little tired keeping track of all new info while doing exercises, but enjoyable and compelling. started this with guitar in mind but thinking maybe can handle piano after finished lol

Great course! After fully completing it, I learned a great deal as a person who had next to no experience in reading music notation and understanding music theory as a whole, and I found it to be indeed very comprehensive. I only would have liked some more explanation for notating the rhythmic subdivisions and the logic that goes behind analyzing a musical piece. I realize as I went through the course that I certainly have a lot ahead of me as I continue to learn music theory and composition, which I look forward to.

I am writing this review after completing Levels 1-3.
I am a professional musician and I started playing music almost a decade ago. I never pursued any formal training and always relied on intuition and my musical ear to compose. Just like most self-taught musicians, I have randomly picked techniques and knowledge that interest me and thus my understanding of music has been haphazard. And that has regularly brought me creative blocks.
I've decided to learn music theory systematically now. I picked Mr. Allen's course as it is really popular here, and my oh my, am I having the time of my life! I am finally learning music like I have always wanted to; as a language that builds on alphabets and goes on to create beautiful novels. It was shocking how weak my foundation was and Mr. Allen is bridging things perfectly. His way of teaching is super approachable and he never bores me for a second. He truly and greatly builds upon brick by brick to create a solid foundation of the language and has me coming back everyday for a new session. I feel more and more confident after every class I finish. I like his worksheets as well but it is really important to put things he teaches into practice on your own.
I am on Level 4 now and looking forward to going through his entire course. Thank you Mr. Allen for your extraordinary efforts to bring your amazing knowledge to us folks who can't attend a music college outright :)

Great teaching method. Very impressively prepared. Well, the instructor holds a PhD! I have been looking for this quality of instruction in music for a long time (twenty years). Dr. Allen has done a fantastic instructional job!

By Joe Fishbein on 11/8/2020

Enjoyed the class! Jason is an excellent presenter. A small amount of the material was dated, mainly because I'm using a newer version on MuseScore.

His way of teaching the music is fantastic. Every topic is carefully explained to make us understand. I am very excited to go further. Thank you

J. Allen is not only a solid mentor on Music Theory but he is also extremely engaging. All the lessons are made to be on quite a fluent pace and, although you can tell there's a considerable effort to build the lessons beforehand, they are not robotic or dull. I really enjoyed taking this course and am already looking forward to start parts 4,5 and 6!

By Ari Martinez on 9/1/2020

Jason was a great teacher. Super easy to follow and get little assignments to test what you just learned. When I had questions throughout the course, I got a reply very quickly. I would highly recommend taking this course.

This course is perfect for beginners with no knowledge of music theory. The instructor explains in such a way that one understands everything without being overloaded. I definitely recommend this course for those just starting out with music.
