Course Description

Our political debates, newspaper headlines, and internet comments are all toooften stripped of nuance and a sense of shared humanity. Too many public conversations are stuck in polarized language of confrontation and certainty.
We need new ways to foster dialogue with people across lines of religion, politics, ethnicity, and experience.

Since 2001 Krista Tippett has hosted conversations on the big questions of meaning forOn Being, a radio program and podcastdistributed to 400 public radio stations across the country. A Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and author of the recently published Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living, she models a conversational style that elicits wisdom and cultivates generous listening. In 2014, she received the National Humanities Medal at the White House. Her conversation partners have ranged from clergy to social activists to poets and civil rights leaders.

In this breakthrough course, she challenges each of us to

slow down and to listen. To embrace ambiguity. To find the difficult moments

where real wisdom lies. This is a different kind of course, a master's take on

reaching a deeper level of understanding. There are no quick answers here, no

simple exercises. Instead, Krista will open your

eyes (and ears) to a different way of engaging in the important conversations

that can change everything.

Through a series of short video lessons, you'll learn about Krista'spractices for becoming a generous listener and she'll impartlessons from some of the most skillful conversationalists of our time.
Krista willteach you how to identify bad or confrontational questions and move to a style of inquiry that elicits more wisdom. Shell uncover why moving towards common ground or getting on the same page should not actually be thegoal of mostconversations, and help you shift from caring only about issues to caring about the people you are conversing with. Youll leave the course with an understanding of how you can approach your next conversation with a renewed sense of wonder and humility, rather than certainty or absolutism. Her collected wisdom will galvanize anyone looking to spark meaningful dialogue across lines of difference in the service of social change.

Note that this course consists of a set of short video lessons taught by Krista. The course materials also includeexercises andlinks to relevant freepodcast interviews that she has conducted for her On Being radio program. Who this course is for:

This course was interesting and informative in many ways. It was good in terms of discussing philosophical ideas and global views. It was not as helpful for use in a business sense, for conversations involved in presenting new product development, group collaboration, etc.

It's all very good, I would just like to see a little more depth in the selected themes.

I found that what I had hope to get out of this course never really happened. i was looking for some very practical Ideas about how to engage those around me in conversations that would be meaningful--
It was too lofty. Too wordy. I became disinterested much too quickly. I chose the course cause I liked Krista's On Being on Public radio. I did not finish the course.

I enjoyed this course only when I offered my full attention and patience as Krista's subtle messages and lessons need a sincere mindset of the student. It is NOT the kind of skilling up courses that need technical abilities and one can complete in a limited duration. I am referring re-listening back to Krista's lessons whenever I feel the need.

the course did not turn out to be relevant. off topic. disappointing and sheer waste of time.

I am an avid fan of Krista Tippet. She invites us with a warm welcome and calm presence where her "and/both" perspective soon flows into practical ways to bridge; and then make a difference in both one on one relationships and social change movements. Like her, I believe everyone can become conversationally competent and civil. My observation is that there are so many facets in the diamond of better dialogue that a "conversation canvas" would be a useful preview and review of this essential course. For example, her best advice and lessons learned make common sense if you image placemat at your dinner table divided into four equal sections; 1) Vocabulary - what do the words you use mean? 2) Opinions - listening begins with your presence and undivided attention to people's voice, feelings and emotions. 3) Facts - It is what it is; what is the context and content that proves or verifies your claim? 4) Decisions, who has a voice, a vote, and when about what should we do as a family, community, business or government? By listening with respect, the canvas can do miracles. Everyone at the table has an opportunity to understand and be understood. Thanks to Krista Tippet, we can move beyond debates in gridlock and conversations in caves. I recommend her and this course without reservations. I suggest you approach her Art of Conversation course with a sense of awe and wonder. Be prepared for delight!
