Android Java Masterclass - Become an App Developer (Udemy.com)

The course is really good! But with "but"s. + The content of this course is VERY big, valuable, lots of useful techniques, unobvious approaches, Android lifehacks and design tricks. + Jean-Paul usually replies questions very fast and this is a great support! + Tim speaks on video with optimal speed: many lecturers speek too slow and make course too long, not in this case. This means, more information is packed in these 60 hours of lectures. - MANY times I was like, "what`s going on?" because the explanation style is: "coding on screen, telling what the code does". This is master class, yes, not a definitive course of lectures, but more visual material (e.g. illustrating how different parts of Android ecosystem work) would be of great help. Tables with app structure helped a lot, but there are just a few of them. - Course has a cliffhanger "we will make app settings in the next video" and there`s no next video, it is the end of the course. (as of 31.07.2020). I hope it will be finished. Conclusion: I would recommend this course to any person who is gonna be Android developer, though not as a first, "introduction" course.

He has very knowledge and experience in the programming life. Therefore, When he explain some codes or write code, he tells us very briefly and we can pick up quickly. Of course, Lots of libraries is old and it causes to get errors while program is running. But if you write codes by typing, you can't get any error. I think this course doesn't include things about gaming coding but (I think) if you want to get a job as Android Developer, it is very useful course to reach your goal.Just have a problem that we need to code "Setting" menu in last lecture but he finished this course and There is no make sense to creating "Duration" column in Durations Report menu. Because we just get random duration and Making counter for duration and notifying to user would be nice. Everything else is good. Thanks for everything Tim...

before this course i did all but the last 9 hours of Tims Java Course - totally recommend that. This course is not anywhere as good as that one, its slightly outdated (like all android courses i suppose as the framework is developing real fast) and way less interactive compared to the java masterclass - like there is no real challenges, no project to work on, not even multiple choice questions or anything, just a few real small challenges. If you like Tims way of Teaching and if you want to learn the basics for android, i suppose its still a really good option - a lot was covered here and the whole lifecycle, callback etc stuff you learn is really valuable. So i still like this course, am happy to have just finished all of it and overall like Tims way of explaining things.

The good: The course is very exhuastive and gives you tons of up to date knowledge, skills and tools. Tim seems to be a great programmer who knows exactly what he's doing and explains the material very well. In addition, Tim and his assistence who seems very knowledgble as well always answer questions. The bad: To be honest I found the apps created during the course a bit bland and boring. Also, sometimes the lectures are not focused enough and that's why the duration of the course is around 60 hours if I'm not mistaken. When you want to review a topic you leanred, it becomes a bit tedious. Overall excellent course, I think it's the best out there for Android development

Yes, you will learn how to program for Android. However the course is way too long, so long you might never finish watching it all. I expected quite a lot more. THE GOOD: There is quite a lot more information about the Java side of Android than in other courses. The instructors are quick to answer questions, and the course is up to date (they reupload videos with fixes if necessary). Pay attention to bookmarks, you might find interesting pieces of code around. THE BAD: Be warned: no advertisement tutorial (which is virtually the main way of monetizing applications). No maps, no geolocation, no bluetooth. No Firebase. No multimedia (audio or sound playing). THE UGLY: Filtering what's useful and what's not is a chore. The pace is irregular. The first four and half hours have no code at all. Then it starts picking pace and feels like a free fall with the Flickr App, which introduces way too many things, ending with the final timing application which is exceedingly long (118 lessons, over 23 hours long!). Most of those lessons had no questions nor bookmarks at all, not sure anyone else had watched them all before I did. For a final application, it could have been a shorter, more interesting project. If you start to feel sleepy or bored, skip to the next lesson, you most likely won't miss anything important. They edit videos to add notes onscreen, but they should ring a bell or something to make you pay attention to it, since you will most likely be listening to some long explanation while having your browser minimized and will miss it.

Original review: Very informative. Just I feel like not as much real live app example as some other apps though Update August 28, 2018: I must say out of the many online videos i've seen, this group is one of the few that I felt like actually cares about helping you turn into an engineer more than the money. They always updates things when things get old and ect. Unlike any other udemy where I can stuck and yes while i can figure things out myself, I'm here to learn materials, not how to search things up, which I can do already. (he does it in a way where you can do both too which is pretty cool!) Update Nov 07, 2018: I just "finished" the course. The course seems to be incomplete though (waiting for the settings for the task timer) Otherwise this course is def not for the beginner if you are the average human being. I was one of the top students at my swift bootcamp when I did one, however I feel lost/needing to redo bunch of things a bunch of time. And part of it is because he tells you lots of information overload that you don't need the first time around. But its def those things you'd appreciate after you dive deeper into things. I personally think it's easier to learn from simpler one action projects than to learn from these giantgantic "real life" projects, so wished they had more of those.

I think this course could be a bit better if simple exercises where added more frequently. This would help reinforce what was just presented. I feel a bit like all I am doing is following the leader without any "real" reinforcement to the topics presented here. I do think the instructor does a great job in explaining things. I have had a few small issues with differences in Android Studio such as when adding the card view gradle suddenly started complaining I was using two different library versions. A little googling and I got this fixed in 5 minutes. This of course was an issue with Android Studio and not the course. I do find the course helpful as someone who is new to both Java and Android. I am an old C/C++ (Pascal, Forth, Assem.) developer from days gone by. I'm looking to learn some new technologies and this course is a BIG help! So this is more a critique than and complaint.

I believe this is a great course. Tim is very experience developer and he only used high quality code during the course. He used the best practises, boilerplates, readable, neat approach and Google advised snippets which results in proven and tested programs. I would prefer his courses when he adds new ones. In my humble opinion course would be a bit better if he make following changes: -Add more comments to classes and methods within whole course -Introduce new concepts before he use them in app development process -Add more app samples using audio, graphics, maps, services, broadcasts

A solid course that covers a wide range of topics/features. That being said, after have completing the course in full, there are things I am left having trouble understanding. The main one is how activities work with one another and passing information to and from activity to activity. I would like to see some lectures focusing solely on this. Also sometimes it felt more just like copying code instead of actually being a lesson. For example the biggest section of the course - Section 10 Databases And The Friends App. It would be great if after each lecture where something new was introduced there was a small test or challenge that focused on this to help you grasp it better.

Tim does a great job of slowly and methodically walking though a project. He takes the time to explore and explain many important sidetracks along the way to explain "why" we are doing things -- this is what I am looking for; more details on "why" and best-practices. Tim also keeps his videos up to date, with word art popping up like "oops I meant to say blah blah blah" to quickly correct mistakes he catches. His offer to freely upgrade us to Android O when it is ready is just another reason to put this at 5 stars. The course ended rather abruptly, leaving the TaskTimer half-finished. This was a tad disappointing. But Tim spent so long doing deep-dives on various project aspects (which was a good thing) that this is forgiven.
