8 Beautiful Ruby on Rails Apps in 30 Days & TDD - Immersive (Udemy.com)

Lookalikes of Instagram, Tumblr, TaskRabbit, etc, w/ fundamentals of Rails (no Scaffolding).

Created by: Yonathan Ayenew

Last updated March 2016

Our take

Based on the ratings of 2,060 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2016. No course pays to be reviewed.

Eight small Rails apps built one after another, each a stripped-down copy of a famous site: an Evernote-style file cabinet, Tumblr, Instagram, a todo list, a Hacker News forum, an IMDb clone, a project manager and a TaskRabbit board. It is free, runs about 16 hours across 132 lectures, and has pulled in about 61,000 students. Yonathan Ayenew, a marketer who teaches coding on the side, skips theory almost entirely and introduces each idea only when the app needs it. That makes the course a good fit for first-timers who learn by typing, and a poor fit for anyone who wants to understand why Rails does what it does.

Reviewers like the pace and the fact that every project ends with something that works, and one says the Rails MVC and CRUD conventions become clear by the end. The complaints are consistent. The apps are very similar, so after the first couple you are repeating the same steps under a different name. The course was last updated in March 2016 and targets an older Rails, though students report the apps port to Rails 5 with small tweaks other learners have posted. The stylesheet links were broken for at least one reviewer. He also talks fast, which non-native English speakers found tiring.

The TDD in the title is really one 35-minute lecture at the end, and none of the eight apps are built test-first. If testing is the goal, Testing Ruby with RSpec, in the same category, is built around it. Next to the full-length courses it sits beside, this is the quick, free, hands-on option: worth a weekend for a beginner who wants portfolio pieces, not a substitute for a current, full-length Rails course. Expect a Mac-centric setup, no quizzes, and no certificate.

Best forBeginners who want to build eight small Rails apps back to back and learn the conventions by repetition, not by reading.
Skip it ifYou already know Rails CRUD and MVC, or you came for the TDD in the title, which is a single 35-minute lecture at the end.

Pros

  • Free, and eight finished apps means beginners come away with portfolio pieces, not just notes.
  • Learn-by-building approach; reviewers say Rails MVC and CRUD conventions stick after a few repetitions.
  • Clear, well-produced videos; one working developer called it a decent refresher on Rails views.
  • Covers real features: image uploads, star ratings, voting, user logins, HAML, and a Heroku deploy.

Cons

  • Last updated in 2016 and built on an older Rails, so expect small fixes to run it on current versions.
  • The eight apps reuse the same pattern, and low-star reviews call it repetitive and too basic.
  • TDD is a single lecture at the end, and none of the projects are built test-first.
This course is a great intro to Rails. You will clearly grasp Rails conventions for MVC and CRUD. The cores of web applications.
Ray Hebard, a student

Listed as all levels, but it is really a first Rails course; anyone past basic CRUD will find it repetitive. Setup assumes a Mac.

Course Description

Build your Rails portfolio with 8 super cool web applications in Ruby on Rails. Use it to begin seeking jobs as proof of what you can do, or feel confident to launch projects.

I know the frustration of learning how to code. Trust me. I've been there.

But how did I go from "aspiring developer" to winning hackathons with 150 people and building web applications for a living? Simple. I learned by doing. By building different applications over and over again.

"Spent over £2k on a Rails course and it wasn't half as good as what this course is offering for free. Ta " - Lyndon Joseph

“This class was simply amazing. I learned a lot and I know how to code now! I'm excited to put in the work to master the new skills I've learned. Thank you.” – Montalis Anglade

The 8 app in 30 days course is THE most comprehensive crash course you'll find in Ruby on Rails, styling/design, and best-practices -- or your money back. You can begin with zero skills and become a fee-earning Rails developer in just 30 days.

The best way to absorb unfamiliar concepts is to begin with the large picture in mind and work down to details. This course has been designed to show you new concepts (variables, loops, conditionals, gems, e.t.c.) ONLY AS YOU APPLY THEM and NEVER in theory.

~20 Hours spread over 30 days of clear coding instruction where we will delve into the full process of zero-to-launch!

  • Personal contact with me, the course tutor (yonathan@crashlearner.com)
  • Lifetime access to course materials
  • Hands-on learning to lock that knowledge in
  • A deep understanding of how to code, design and build powerful websites

I will never leave you hanging!

It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do professionally. I guarantee that ANYONE can benefit from this course, whether it's earning a bit of extra cash on the side, changing career altogether or just the freedom to bring ideas to life.

More from former students have this to say:

“Good clear instruction. There are materials floating around online, but Yonathan has put them together in an order that makes sense.” – Jonathan Grove

“Yonathan's tutorial and style of teaching is really relaxed and to the point. A lot of rails tutorials out there either show you too much or too little. His tutorial was the right mix - focusing on getting stuff up and running really quick.” - Manuel Da Costa

This course is both for students who have no experience in programming at all and also for students who have tried Ruby on Rails in the past but want to take their skills to the next level.

This is the best Ruby on Rails course online. Excellent tutor and up to date tutorials. Concepts are simplified and clearly explained. Tutor is very practical in his teaching method. And it is surprisingly free. My confidence level as a Rails Developer has increased greatly after taking this course. God bless you Yonathan Ayenew for this tutorial.

By Evans Musomi on 4/2/2018

I love the practical, learn as you build approach used and focus on Ruby on Rails. It's a promising way to go through the development loop iteratively. When I was taking the course, I noticed that the link to resources (stylesheets) was broken. Would be nice if broken links were updated. Also, it's based on an older version of Rails but all apps easily port over to version 5.1.6 which is the current stable version. It's been a fun 8 apps in 8 days for me!

By Andrew Cockerham on 1/1/2018

If you're at all familiar with Rails, I found this tutorial quite basic. All of the examples are very similar and much is repeated. I was looking for some videos on TDD - however none of the examples actually use TDD - there is just one TDD video at the end. This might be ok if you're new to Rails - he goes through all the code but not a ton of explanation or teaching as to how it works.

By Noel Delgado on 7/14/2017

It is a great course if you want some repetition to sync in rails concepts. I recommend doing it to get a better idea on what different things can be built (easily) with rails. I think the target audience of this course is someone who knows django, laravel, or other frameworks and wants to see how rails is different (and amazing). If you are completely new to programing, maybe do another course first before this one. For the most part, all Apps you build are 80% the same as all the other ones, which is why I am not giving it a 5 star rating. It would have been great to learn something new with each lecture.

By Marivaldo Sena on 7/5/2017

This course is very useful for those who want to become Rails developers. The first example is a bit fast-paced, but the second one is better explained and introduce thoroughly many concepts mentioned earlier. Each project you build helps to consolidate what was previously taught. He reinforces it with detailed explanation and teaches us to use essential gems.

By Todd Wozny on 6/23/2017

I think the instructor is good. Very patient and has a nice delivery. I like the fact that each step is performed in every project (from rails new to changing the file names to .scss) It helps to use repetition. Also, I like that there are mistakes from time to time. Misspellings, etc. I also enjoy switching from .erb to .haml. Mixes it up.

By Nauman Sheikh on 1/18/2017

Nice course, where the instructor shows you step by step how to build various Ruby web applications with CRUD features. Demonstration of 'devise' and 'simple_forms' gem is also very nice. Throughout the course, the instructor is using Ruby's convention of DRYing up the code. It would be nice if the instructor can add RSpec testing for one of the apps that he show-cases in the course :). Also, thanks for providing CSS files for each app. It makes it easy to focus on learning Ruby and not get bogged down with presentation specifics. Overall, a great value!

By Devon Kiss on 1/16/2017

Great course with many, many examples throughout the 8 complete applications that are built! Definitely great for anyone new or new-ish to Ruby on Rails development. Highly recommended! Only drawback that I have would be with the production quality in some of the videos which CAN lead to confusion. All errors that I came across throughout the course were resolved. Great introduction to Ruby on Rails!

By P.Charles Antonio on 10/10/2016

This is a solid beginner course and I'm really enjoying it but I've already taken an extensive bootcamp and understand more of what's going on behind the scenes without the sometimes necessary deep dive. Somebody with no programming experience can follow along click-by-click and create (or replicate) some awesome stuff, but deeper explanation is required to really understand what Ruby is doing and how to manipulate it further. Still, the repetition is good. Actually, it's great. And the consistent high-level repeating descriptions are great. Also, that you're not letting scaffolding do all the work is better for the novice. You should perhaps explain why scaffolding might not be the best way to become and advanced developer. Starting out exclusively scaffolding can spoil you, and may not get you the immediate nerd cred with hardcore Rubyists. Although scaffolding's faster, and gives you a ton of stuff, doing it your way will put the new developer that much further ahead with an understanding what's happening under the hood, especially at the action level. I wish I found this course BEFORE I paid what I paid to attend my local boot camp. I still would have done the boot camp, but I think I would have struggled a lot less. I think a more advanced accompanying course is needed for intermediate Devs. Something that shows how to manipulate the language more to create unique web app functionality. It would be great to take a unique idea and work it all of the way through. Or unique functionality on an existing app. Also, and not sure if this is in this series or not, working with Postgresql has got to be a part of the course, even on ones local machine. Still, this is a good course and as I said I am enjoying it. Onward...

Learning is about taking the unknown content and connecting it with something that you already know. But! As a zero coder. I needed to start from scratch. I explored many courses and they all explains a lot. By saying explain they tell you about how rails works. But you can't understand anything unless you can't make connections in your mind. So... What will happen if you have nothing to connect to in your mind about coding. This is the tough part! For my case rails can be learned by doing projects blindly like repeating words like parrots. In time, things will find its place. This course doesn't have the best explanations and teaching technic but it will make you get used to doing rails applications. Do all 8 applications then do it again! Do this over and over and things will be clear as day. Doing the same thing over will make you start thinking as a coder. Then you can dive deeper.
