Course Description
This course will invite you into an intentional journey through Lent, during which you will learn how Lent enables believers to inhabit the church year and grow in their faith.
Lent, the season during which the Church traditionally prepares for Easter, has been celebrated by Christians around the world for centuries. It is a time for new Christians to enter the community of believers, and for every Christian to focus on repentance and renewal.
Many people, if they celebrate Lent at all, use it primarily as a time to give up a less-than-healthy habit. But the season includes so much more! There are practices, prayers, and services all designed to encourage reflection and repentance. But these don’t have to be intimidating. This course will help lower the barriers of Lent so that you can enter into this beneficial season at your own pace.
Along the way, we will break down some of the assumptions underlying potential resistance to Lent. We will also pay close attention to various themes of Lent, including repentance, renewal, and discipleship, and how these themes can help you develop a more robust faith.
This course is designed to be used during the season of Lent, but can profitably be used at any time of year. As such, it is divided into the weeks of Lent, allowing you or your group to utilize the material in a time-sensitive manner, and reflect on it with believers around the world.
We invite you to begin your journey through Lent with us!

I am a retired presbyterian pastor and Wheaton grad. 50 years ago one of my profs (quoting someone) said it is not new profundities but older insights we already deeply believe and love that move us most. Thank you Prof McCaulley for this wonderful exploration of Lent's beautiful basics.

This course was EXACTLY what I needed to observe, and dare I say celebrate, Lent this year! It provided structure, history, gospel, prayer, and meditation. Next year, I'm going to invite friends to observe with me. I think going through these rhythms in community will be deeply impactful to the big "C" church.

It opens the mind for all levels of Jesus followers to begin anew…to reflect on the reality none are already there…or expected to be…nor is that the plan. Beginning anew is vital for growing deeper in relationship with Jesus as we walk humbly with God.

I was expecting a devotion for each day of lent. Especially when it said it had 41 lectures - maybe 41 pieces or items - the teacher is interesting but nit at all what I expected

I do not have a liturgical church background so my only exposure to Lent was my friends telling me what they gave up for 40 days. This course explained the background and gave me a better understanding. What I learned is that Lent is an opportunity for a season of reflection of my relationship to Jesus and will incorporate some of these themes into my personal devotional time during this season.

Prof. McCaulley's short course on Lent traces its history and practices. His presentation shows how Lent can be an aid that helps you follow Jesus as a disciple. The course stresses that there is no One way to do Lent, but presents Lent as a tool and a spiritual guide in our journey. This course is a reminder that Lent is our opportunity to renew ourselves once again.

This is an excellent primer for Lent, especially for those not within a liturgical tradition but also for those who are and want to understand Lent more fully and at a deeper level. Prof. Esai's informal style, coupled with his extensive knowledge and experience in both a non-liturgical and liturgical tradition help make this a great course for journeying through Lent.

With a very approachable and honest style, Professor McCaulley shows that just as Jesus used ritual throughout his life, and although we must guard against it replacing God, it can be a very useful way of pointing us to God. By using prayers and readings connected to Lent and Holy Week he demonstrates how we can do this in practical ways. I highly recommend it for devotional use during Lent but also at any time throughout the year.

I am not from a liturgical tradition. And this course did not convince me that I should change. But I really liked some of the insights in to the benefits and uses of the liturgy - primarily it is another tool to come into contact with God. Very good course.

I am so grateful for this course! Learning about Lent is new to me and I am excited and delighted to understand and participate in this experience. I hope to find a place where I can participate in this beauty and be renewed by the truths that stand behind the symbolic rituals (now that I understand them). Thank you so much for offering this course!
