Course Description

Abnormal psychology is a branch of psychology that deals with psychopathology and abnormal behavior, often in a clinical context. The term covers a broad range of disorders, from depression to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to personality disorders. Counselors, clinical psychologists, and psychotherapists often work directly in this field.

Abnormal psychology focuses on the patterns of emotion, thought, and behavior that can be signs of a mental health condition. Rather than the distinction between normal and abnormal, psychologists in this field focus on the level of distress that behaviors, thoughts, or emotions might cause.

If a behavior is creating problems in a person's life or is disruptive to other people, then this would be an "abnormal" behavior. In such cases, the behavior may require some type of mental health intervention.

Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about the following: Abnormal Psychology – Past and Present; Research in Abnormal Psychology; Models of Abnormality; Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment; Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive, and Related Disorders; Disorders of Trauma and Stress; Treatments for Depressive and Bipolar Disorders; Suicide; Eating Disorders; Substance Use and Addictive Disorders; Sexual Disorders and Gender Variation; Personality Disorders; Disorders Common Among Children and Adolescents; Disorders of Aging and Cognition; and law, society, and the Mental Health Profession.

(Certificate of Completion)

This course offers an introduction to abnormal behavior and psychotherapy.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Identify the various roles that mental health professionals play within the mental health system.

2. Describe the theoretical foundations of therapeutic psychology to include: intake, problem identification and assessment, and the facilitation of therapeutic change.

The content is okay if you're a beginner (don't bother if you're not). It goes through psychological disorders, but nothing more than what you'd find if you did a quick google search on each disorder. I was hoping for more insight and more practical info. If you're big into looking at the instructor, she's not seen (I don't mind that much). She's heard in some lessons, but not at all of them, because some lessons are just pieces of text with music playing in the background (that one I DID mind). Honestly, if it were a free course I'd 5-star it, because for a free course it would be totally fine, but I'm annoyed I paid to just see some pictures of texts and have someone just read what's in the text (and not even all of it).

One of the more intriguing aspects of this course was learning about the different types of sexual disorders and dysfunctions. Learning about the various disorders helped me to realize that many aspects of sexual activity and responses that may be considered "normal" or "temporary" can also be full-blown disorders. Simultaneously, learning about these aspects from a "disorders" perspective helps to bring nuances in determining whether a certain aspect of sexual activity/expression can be deemed as "disorders" Taking up this course helped me to build upon to the knowledge and understanding ascertained from my undergraduate studies in Psychology, particularly within the realms of abnormal behaviour and clinical psychology. I will always appreciate new learning, even reviewing previously learned concepts and tying them in with new knowledge. With hopes to pursue clinical practice and psychotherapy in my career, I intended on applying all my knowledge and understanding into dealing with individuals suffering from disorders or life problems. This course has helped me to strengthen my current base of knowledge in these domains, helping me move a step closer into my pursuits and aspirations. Thank you so much Dr. Bev Knox for a wonderful course and subject matter!

Exceptional and Informative touches levels of are livelihood with understanding , how we express ourselves in a disorder manner not being aware of it. Allows you to process a behavior verses passing one, A well needed course for everyday LIFE

The information is great, the way it is given could be enhanced. Bev tends to let the images do all the work, she does not give direct communication in the Q&A but instead tells you to email her leaving everyone with the same questions without answers. While I would love to give this more stars it seems Bev is in it for the money not the students.

The course really opened my eyes and gave me a much better understanding of psychology, so I can use what I learned within my area of expertise. This course is a wonderful course to do. I enjoyed everything and learned a whole lot of taboo subjects that I would not usually be confronted with.
