What you will learn

  • Learn how the Ethereum Virtual Machine sets the gas price
  • Learn how to improve the gas price of existing code
  • Learn how to debug execution costs for smart contracts
  • Learn what designs to avoid that lead to high execution costs

Course Description

Ever been surprised by the gas costs in a smart contract? The Ethereum Virtual Machine calculates these costs deterministically, but understanding how is a bit obscure unless you want to comb through the dense yellowpaper! This course helps you understand where every last bit of gas is coming from and the gotchas that can make transactions surprisingly expensive.

This course is for solidity developers looking to progress from beginner to advanced intermediate. Knowledge about Solidity, OpenZeppelin, and Remix is assumed. You should know how to deploy and test a smart contract, and ideally, you've created a token on the mainnet before (and experienced how expensive it can be!).

I’m the author of ERC1155D, arguably the most efficient NFT contract created. I’m here to share my learnings with you!

Some of the most enjoyable years of my life was teaching computer science at Columbia University, so I’m happy to relive those years virtually!

Topics covered include:

  • A deep dive into the solidity compiler

  • A deep dive into the Ethereum Virtual Machine

  • How to understand the output from the solidity compiler

  • How to track down wasteful computation

  • Understanding gas cost specifications

  • Techniques for improving gas costs

  • How memory, transaction data, state changes, and computational cost affect transaction cost

  • Bad designs to avoid

  • Where the Yellowpaper is wrong!

Hi there!

I'm the founder of RareSkills, the most comprehensive blockchain and solidity training bootcamp. Our students have gotten interviews at top blockchain companies even before graduating.

Previously, I started and led the video machine learning group at Yahoo. I have two patents in Artificial Intelligence and have placed in the top 10 in international machine learning contests. At the time, I was the youngest Senior Manager at Yahoo, coordinating engineering at scale for video ingestion and machine learning algorithm selection.

I got my graduate degree in theoretical computer science at Columbia University in New York.

I'm an avid startup advisor and have helped startups advance between funding rounds.

This is my second time, watching this course. Instructor have deep knowledge regarding with Ethereum Protocol. Before taking this course, student may need some computer science background knowledge. Note: Instructor spoke little too fast.

Very useful information about the cost of gas in ethereum. The most interesting part is the section dedicated to read/write variables, which are the ones that consume more gas and the ones that make the difference at the end.

Top-notch explanations about gas handling by Ethereum. Very clear, without unnecessary details, and straight to the point. The course conveys valuable knowledge to become an advanced smart contract developer.

Great learning experience! Cuts right to the needed knowledge and allows for a much better understanding of very complex equations and machine language without all the time, effort and frustrations normally involved in learning materials. GREAT JOB!

The best udemy course ever. Jeff does not waste your time with unnecessary words. He almost spoon-feeds you considering the amount of effort you would have to put to fully understand those medium articles out there covering the same topic. He is definitely a talented instructor.

Extraordinary useful course, probably the best one I've done on the Solidity so far. The teacher is very knowledgable and the outcome of applying this principles in your smart contracts will automatically place you in another league. Great Course!!!

No wastage of time, very advanced topics that too in detail. Sometimes blockchain-smart-contracts courses are less useful because we have to watch the topics we already know. But in this course, he went directly to advanced topics and I think that's great for advanced learners. Ps: This course is not for beginners..

The information provided during the course is priceless! Definitely not for beginners, but if you want to learn more advance concepts related to Gas optimization, then do not hesitate and get this course.

Brilliant course. This helped me a ton as a new Solidity programmer: 1. I am now comfortable very comfortable estimating gas costs. I really liked how the Jeffrey actually shows you the opcodes, goes to the EVM paper and shows the gas costs associated with the codes. Really good for building a mental model of how your code will affect costs. 2. I really like how remix was used for everything. From the course, I indirectly learnt to use remix to develop and iterate quickly :) Hope Jeffrey makes more courses!!

This was a fantastic course. It did a great job of explaining first principles of the Ethereum Virtual Machine and Gas Costs. Topics were covered clearly. The video quality was excellent. I have walked away with a good understanding of common gas saving techniques but also enough knowledge to look through my code and the compiler to find ways to optimize my code. My only wish was that there was a closing chapter that provided a little review and maybe some general rules on gas cost optimizing. This course is great regardless and if you're on the fence about picking it up, I think it's definitely worth your investment.
