Our take

Based on the ratings of 2,006 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

Rahul Prasad's bootcamp is mostly a data modelling course with a dbt finish. The syllabus shows about 12 hours across 150 lectures, and only one section, roughly 3.7 hours, is the hands-on dbt and BigQuery build. Before that come databases, warehouses, normalisation, ERD notations, Inmon, Kimball, Data Vault and dimensional modelling. It targets analysts, BI people and recent graduates who want to move toward analytics engineering. The requirements say no experience is needed, though some SQL helps.

With a 4.6 rating across about 2,000 reviews, reviewers praise the clear, visual explanations and the way the course ties the big concepts together. One supply chain analyst says they apply many of the methods in daily work. The complaints are consistent, though. Several reviewers call the course theory heavy, and one says the slides are simply read out. Another found errors and mismatches between slides and narration, plus rough auto-generated subtitles. In the hands-on part, setup takes patience, some steps are not shown on screen, and one reviewer felt the Power User section was a pitch for the author's extension.

The course was last updated in May 2024, so some dbt and BigQuery screens may look different now. One reviewer calls the build basic, mostly SQL joins turned into dbt models, and another says experienced data professionals should not spend time on it. As a first map of the field, it does the job. For serious dbt project work, treat it as groundwork and plan to practice elsewhere.

Best forData analysts or career changers who want the modelling concepts first, then one guided dbt and BigQuery build.
Skip it ifYou already work with dbt or warehouses and want advanced, project-heavy practice instead of theory.

Pros

  • Visual slide walkthroughs of OLTP, OLAP, Kimball, Inmon and Data Vault that reviewers find easy to follow
  • Hands-on build of a dimensional warehouse with dbt, BigQuery and git, about 3.7 hours long
  • Instructor shares on-the-job advice and self-documenting habits, according to one reviewer
  • Compact at about 12 hours, with six quizzes to check the concepts as you go

Cons

  • First half is theory heavy, and one reviewer says the slides are simply read out
  • Some errors, unclear wording and auto-generated subtitles; a few steps are not shown on screen
  • Hands-on build is basic for experienced people, and the last update was May 2024
This is a really nice course to understand the base of data modelling and common terms in the field. I like that it also includes a hands-on exercise covering the usage of tools like dbt, bigquery and git.

Labeled beginner, and it works for concepts, but one reviewer says basic SQL and coding knowledge makes the course much easier to follow.

Thank you, Rahul. This course gave me foundational knowledge of building a data warehouse from scratch to enable business intelligence. I was able to follow the course and was completely immersed and made sure to understand all that was taught. I love the experience. Thank you for the effort you put into organizing and putting this boot camp course together.

Pros: - Amazing if you need to revisit Analytics Engineering, it's great at capturing the big picture - Instructor gives you insight into what happens on the job and gives you advice - DBT is an amazing tool - Instructor gives you amazing ways of performing Analytics Engineering work that are self-documenting, which is invaluable for long-term value of projects you will deliver Cons: - the Source to Target mapping is dry, with essentially copy-pastes etc, so you have to wrestle through this section and you must not lose sight of how this fits into the big picture of delivering a project and adding value to your company / client. - same for a few other sections (I may have skipped a few) - there are some errors, especially in the source to target mapping, where the column headers did not match the values inserted, but you still get the idea of what the instructor means. In any case, great course and I can confidently recommend this course to you. - Especially if you're tight on time and you need to get just the gist of Analytics Engineering / Data Warehousing / Data Modelling in order to get started in a real project; - and/or you're confident that you know how to learn the little tricks and features of DBT on the job with a can-do attitude :D

This course is perfect for ushering you into the world of Analytics Engineering. As I was also advised, I would advise starting with the dbt fundamentals course (available for free on the dbt website) before jumping into this course. It makes things clearer and also makes it easier to follow along with Rahul in the hands-on labs. It will also help if you have some understanding of command-line interfaces and Git. Overall great course!

I bought this course during my notice period prior to me starting a role as a Analytics Engineer, and this course really laid the foundations for me to understand data warehouse & data modelling. I learned way more than I had expected, and the course really out-delivered in this aspect. The format was excellent, I enjoyed the fact that it was taught via slideshows, as I was able to digest the information visually, as well as write notes whilst watching along (it was like I was back at University), it was formatted excellently, kudos to the instructor. The quiz's at the end of each section, also help to cement the concepts. I'm taking half a star away (I would have taken a whole star away had the other parts of this course not been so good), because the hands on dbt aspect of this course was rather thin, it was more of a overview, rather than a deep dive hands-on that I was expecting. If you're looking for a course to understand dbt, then this one ain't it- you'll be left wanting more. But if you want the theory and understanding needed to apply into dbt (such as data warehouse/data modelling, than this is the perfect course for that!). The instructor should really create a separate dbt bootcamp, as the hands on had a lot of potential and was delivered well (just was too thin/more of an overview than a deep dive).

This course is EXCELLENT! 100% recommend. I am a BI analyst and I'm looking to grow into an Analytics Engineer. I 1000% believe this will help me in my journey, now I can tell my peers I built a data warehouse from SCRATCH! Thanks, Rahul!

After completing the course, I found it to be a very good introduction to dbt and data warehousing with dbt and Big Query. The theoretical parts may be a bit dry but they are also useful to prepare interviews and build knowledge of data concepts. The practical parts is quite useful and easy to follow and provides a good overview of the dbt workflow. Thanks for the work you put into this !

This was a great first step into the world of Analytic Engineering. A lot of the concepts taught here gave me a great overview of what i have to do as a Analytic Engineer. Will definitely come back to review over skills as I continue to grow.

I rated it with 5 stars because all the teaching is amazing and I learned more than I expected from this bootcamp! Despite that, I felt that the use case had a very small dataset and it left me with the feeling that it could be something more robust, but this is not critical and I continue to recommend this course to anyone interested in the subject!

By Bonnie Caruso on 4/6/2022

The lecture was very thorough and I appreciate the supporting resources. I had issues with installing the tools that were different than the problems the instructor demonstrated a resolution for.. The free training available from dbt is a bit more thorough in that regard, but I appreciated the application of the methodology alongside the tools in this material.

Rahul and David performed a fantastic job of framing the complex information in the understandable way. It is a very helpful course for anyone who is new in the analytics engineering field or anyone who is interested in becoming an Analytics Engineer. Great work!
