Course Description

This course aims to make you a more rigorous, effective, and creative thinker.

I have taught philosophy and critical thinking at Oxford University and the University of London. I've also written online courses for both Oxford University and Eton College, and published numerous popular philosophy books.

This course distils what I have found to be the most engaging and generally useful critical thinking material. It sharpens up thinking skills that you can then usefully apply in your career, your education, and in your personal life too.

The course develops skills and habits we all need to become more reliable judges of what's true:

  • skills that make us more penetrating thinkers - so that we are better able to both figure out for ourselves, and rationally persuade others, of what's true.

  • skills of intellectual self-defence - that can help immunise us against the influence of bad arguments, propaganda, psychological manipulation, prejudice, fake news, and bullshit.

Becoming a better critical thinker is not just an intellectual exercise. It's also about developing awareness, and especially self-awareness - of the biases and prejudices to which we're all prone and which may skew our judgement.

This course is designed to be highly engaging and accessible. I'm one of the world's leading popularizers of critical thinking and philosophy, with a reputation for explaining even complex ideas clearly.

The course is grounded in some of the most up-to-date research and thinking.

The course is unusual in that, while it covers the fundamentals - including cognitive biases, fallacies, and the basics of argumentation - it includes extra material students find particularly useful outside the classroom.

Feeling stuck or confused? You can communicate with me inside the course - I'll usually get back to you within 24 hours! There are some optional easy quizzes to help your understanding.

Was good. A glossary or sum up at the end of the course related to the key phrases would have helped. Key Phrase & short definition tied back to the course contents. i.e. Pareidolia: Mars Face, Suggestion: Placebo Effect, Anchoring: $500 > $300 etc. Having these key phrases anchored in one's memory would be the main thing to get out of the course in my opinion.

This was a good introduction to the concept. I liked how Stephen provided a downloadable script of each lesson. I plan on looking at them later to review some of the material. He talks clearly and gives good example of the various concepts.

I would recommend any & everyone buy this course which is worth more than double the price. Definitely improved my way of thinking and perception. Amazing stuff, thanks Stephen Law. Hope you release more like these!

The course does justice to the fundamentals of critical thinking. However most of the examples used are somewhat basic and do not thoroughly explain some of the aspects of critical thinking mentioned.

This was my first introduction to critical thinking education, even though I've been an investigator and administrator most of my life. This course has given be a better understanding of the processes behind beliefs and will undoubtedly help me make more unbiased judgements in life and business going forward.

Very clearly explained! I enjoyed a lot and find this course very helpful. I guess the aim was to create awareness of the fallacies and to foster Critical Thinking. I loved the Cognitive Biases module! Thanks Dr. Law

This is an awesome course. Job dont right. I learned a lot in the short time. It was perfectly organized and delivered. Even the hardest concepts like cognitive dissonance and difference between inductive and deductive reasonings were clear right away.

I'm only halfway through, but so far I am really enjoying the course! Looking forward to the next chapters! Until now, it is held rather simply and is easy to understand, even for people who aren't native english speakers. Edit: Having finished the course, I can only recommend it, it's well structured and full of helpfull examples to understand the various concepts mentioned here. Thank you for this super exciting course, Mr. Law :)

Law is a great philosopher and a good teacher. This course is definitely a good introduction to critical thinking, though it's a bit thin in places. I suppose it's a difficult task to make a digestible introduction to something, and not make it too long and in-depth, so that it scares away the uninitiated. Still, 2.5 hours... that's less than one week of a 3-credit college course. I think that approaching this material as if it were a two or three week section of a college course wouldn't be unreasonable. The little tidbits Law added to make this course appeal to business people seem kind of forced, really. But I'm coming at it from an academic perspective, so maybe I'm just predisposed to dislike applications that are just a bit too practical for my tastes.

Concise and clear. Even as someone who was familiar with most of the concepts, it was great to have the fundamentals all brought together in this short course. The ideas are illustrated with simple examples and there is no danger of getting bogged down (as I have with large tomes on critical thinking). The pdfs on the sections are also appreciated.
