Course Description

The data revolution is coming!

Around the globe companies are relying on data to make optimal decisions and bring about better solutions for their customers.

To stay ahead of the curve and not be left behind you need to develop data literacy - the ability to understand data and guide a data driven analysis process. By the end of this course, you will be prepared to lead a data driven project from start to finish. Data literacy will enable you to stand out among peers as you are able to drive robust data-driven decision making to your organization.

With over 20 lectures and two and a half hours of video, you will be exposed to many topics including how to collect and prepare a dataset, ways to explore data visually, how to effectively summarize a dataset with millions of rows into just a few numbers, and how to present all your results effectively at the end of a project. You will also have the opportunity to practice what we learn as you go along in the course! Downloadable Excel files will be available so students can apply the concepts as they learn them and arrive at the same results I do in each lecture.

The course is broken down into the four steps you must take when working on any data analysis project:

  1. Collecting and Preparing Data

  2. Exploring Data Visually

  3. Describing Data Numerically

  4. Telling the Story

I look forward to seeing you in the course and helping you develop data literacy!

Wide-ranging content coverage makes the course effective for those who would like to see the total picture - from analyzing data to presenting it. Examples were relatively straight-forward and understandable. Some of the graphs were a little hard to see and interpret because the colors were too similar, but that only happened a couple times.

This course is a great and concise way to learn everything you need to know to take a data analysis project from start to finish. However, the presenter was talking way too fast, and his delivery was a bit monotone. It made it harder to follow, which is unfortunate, as the content itself is really good.

By Ivory Chaney on 5/30/2024

The instructor did a great job explaining why good data is important and weaving a story that explained how to interpret data in a meaningful way to get actionable information. The excel sheets and examples were helpful in solidifying the information presented and will help me in my studies and job.

This was a good data literacy overview for a broad audience of diverse professional backgrounds and experiences. Having practical exercises to help reinforce the teaching is very good idea and effective, but could have been better implemented. The pace of the sessions was too fast to follow along with on my own, and it isn't always clear when the instructor moves from tab to tab. More structure could be added to direct students to files, tabs, and even to pause the course in order to work some excercises before proceeding to solutions.

I work with data every day and have come to question some of my data sources within the accounting system I work with. Namely, how is this data derived and should I trust the data that is generated from certain systemic and canned reports. If seeing an anomaly between outputs, question why and determine what factors are driving these anomalies.

I found it very well presented, logical in progression and very easy to follow. I do have a bit of experience in data visualization (Qlik/PowerBI/etc.) so I had an advantage but feel the novice would be right at home.

I like the visuals. It is very engaging. The texts are not too much and easy to understand. The speaker is also engaging and captions are easy to follow. As to the content/substance of the subject, it is straight to the point but has enough details.

Yes this was a good course there is a lot of material in this section. It will be useful in my day to day work. I know some of the things in here but some is beyond my data knowledge. I did like the part about when you e-mail your boss and how you get your point across.

By Shawn Carden on 3/14/2023

I liked that it went so far as to show examples of how to use the data visually in an email to a supervisor with the analysis. As a former supervisor, I hated to have to open up the spreadsheet and try to interpret the data myself when in a hurry and I paid someone to be an analyst. Instructor was clear speaking and kept my attention throughout with a variety of examples while also clearing explaining numerical data with modes, means, medians, standard deviation; all things I have not used in years.

It reminds our Finance Class similar at CSU for the First year. It is very much in details with methods of DATA ANALYSIS. Thanks a lot for teaching of DATA collecting and using with Charts/Bar etc.. MINH HA LUU
