Decluttering Your Life - Organization, Home Improvement, Minimalist Lifestyle, and Computer Organization Techniques

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,620 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a pep talk on clutter more than a step-by-step organizing manual. TJ Walker, with co-instructor Peter Alkema, spends 245 short lectures across 43 sections arguing that clutter starts in the mind, then walks room by room through the bedroom, kitchen, garage, car, yard, home office and computer. The signature exercise has students record audio clips of themselves, which he calls SelfieSpeak Programming. It's aimed at people who describe themselves as naturally messy and have bounced off tidier systems before. Nothing here requires special tools, just a willingness to throw things out.

Reviewers like the calm, clear delivery and say the lessons are easy to follow, which shows in the 4.4 stars from about 1,620 reviews and 40,400 students. A couple of reviewers praise the room-specific advice, one citing the point about being honest about which kitchen appliances actually get used. The complaints are consistent, though. Low-star reviews call out heavy repetition, especially in the last twenty or so sections, and a 99-minute block on eating habits that has little to do with tidying a closet. One reviewer found the required self-recording exercises an unwelcome surprise. Another wanted before-and-after photos instead of a talking head on a white background.

It was updated in January 2026, and the later sections cover AI tools and digital minimalism, though those are the parts reviewers find most padded. Among the lifestyle courses it sits beside, this is the only one about the home itself, and at nearly 11 hours it is long for what it teaches. The recommendation: worth it if motivation is the missing piece and the first dozen sections are enough, but anyone who has already read a decluttering book will not find much new.

Best forSelf-described messy people who need motivation more than a labeling system and don't mind listening rather than watching.
Skip it ifYou've already read a decluttering book or two and want new tactics, photos and checklists instead of pep talks.

Pros

  • Calm, clear delivery that reviewers say is easy to follow and genuinely motivating
  • Room-by-room sections for bedroom, kitchen, garage, car, yard, office and computer
  • Treats clutter as a mindset problem first, which naturally messy students say finally clicked
  • Updated in January 2026; also covers phones, digital minimalism and AI tools

Cons

  • Heavy repetition, especially across the last twenty or so short sections
  • A 99-minute block on eating habits and the body that has little to do with tidying
  • Exercises require recording yourself, and there are no before-and-after visuals or props
It was much more than decluttering your home. It touched on many areas in my life that I will be able to apply immediately.
Kimberley Hodges, a student

All Levels is accurate; no prior organizing habits needed, only a willingness to throw things out or donate them.

Message from the instructor

"The problem with so many courses and books on Decluttering isn't that they don't have good ideas and suggestions. the problem is that the instructors are people who have always been neat and organized. Decluttering is second nature for them. I, on the other hand, am naturally messy and sometimes sloppy. I had to come up with a system that works for me and people like me. My unique system of creating SelfieSpeak audio Programming (SSP) will build a system for you to live clutter-free forever!" TJ Walker

It was caseload downtime and watched several videos because there was no work to be done. After watching your video, yours got most of my attention. You cover every aspect of organization I thought I was in a therapy session. You had me laughing all the way through a lot of your presentation. Thank you and I hope there are more of your videos I may watch.

It has to be said that TJ's presenting skills are something to be envious about. That said, I think the course would benefit from a more modern approach: it doesn't really differentiate between how men and women approach decluttering and whether there are differences between what boomers, millenials and genZs do to declutter. I think an additional section on getting a partner/spouse onboard would also mean a lot!

Really helpful !! Thanks for all of the tips.. I have already put them to work and started decluttering my kitchen, my room, my home office. I will do my best to do the self voice recordings to keep reminding me of the tasks to do. Also, I will do my best to throw away one stuff a day to ensure to continue decluttering my home. I will also share this information with my two teenagers and my husband. Wish you all of the best! God Bless you TJ!

It's okay - can't say I took away anything revolutionarily new. If you've ever consumed any other resources on decluttering, you can skip this one and not have missed anything. Some parts are too long, and some advice I don't agree with at all. I like that it starts out by emphasizing that decluttering/minimalism is a mindset shift, and points out the importance of saying no to buying new things or even free stuff. The room-specific sections are useful too (e.g. being realistic about kitchen appliances you use or the shoes you wear). The instructor really hypes up using audio clips for decluttering motivation, but I think using sticky notes or reminders or other visual tools could be equally or more effective depending on an individual's style. The course could be decluttered by talking about SelfieSpeak less. The "Declutter Your Body Now" section is disproportionately long compared to the other sections (over 1.5 hours, vs. others at 10-30 min) and could use some decluttering. For starters, the TikTok lesson can be removed since that's about public speaking and doesn't really have anything to do with decluttering. The tone also leans towards shaming the viewer into eating less ("stop this gluttony" or "it's hard to create or transform if you are stuffing your face all day long") which I don't find helpful. Some advice like "Weigh Yourself Daily" could be downright harmful for people with eating disorders.

This course verified a few thoughts I have had for several years now regarding the accumulation of 'stuff,'-or 'clutter.' Increasingly, personally, I am placing more and more importance on specific items around me that I find useful, need, brings joy, or is an item of sentiment or pride. Though well meaning, friends and some family members who consider me, in their words, a "Renaissance Man," -especially since I work within cultural-resource management entities such as museums, libraries, and archives, tend to give me ALL SORTS of things they believe I would be interested in personally having/possessing.-i.e. Not as a donation to the institution or organization I work for or with!!! (Likewise, I am quite guilty of doing something similar, especially around the holidays when I have a gift-list, and I am shopping or obtaining items for those on my list!) Anyhow, this course gave me some perspective on personally obtaining, receiving, and keeping items or 'stuff,'-the point when it's considered to be 'clutter,' as well as giving to others.

Great (pros): - Section about diet (it's about time someone lovingly addressed this issue causing the top X killers of Americans every year) - I came away very early on trying to declutter every aspect of my life--even the ones not mentioned in the course. It's very empowering and exciting. - Selfie-Speak Audio - give it a chance (I know it's weird, but just do it). Room for improvement: - Place TikTok gushing message in a separate section and fortify it with other videos in that vein because it simply doesn't belong in the diet section - Improve the diet section by adding a section on avoiding oils which are even more unhealthy than sugar (Your body spends calories to convert carbs to fat [I think about 1/3 of the calories], but almost no calories to store fat as fat). Also, oils and saturated fat cause type 2 diabetes and stopping consumption of them will reverse many cases of type 2 diabetes in days or weeks. - The one video of a pitcher filling a glass with water, but not filling the water (it must've been a video effects trick) was distracting and I missed the rest of the content. - The section with the background toward the end where it's inside, but the greens are getting sprayed distracted me because I thought (who'd give a presentation right next to a water sprinkler indoors?) - Have a section on concrete ways of setting up a Selfie Speak Audio Programming workflow on at least Android and iPhone (I'm pretty sure you have an iPhone). I spent several hours trying to figure it out. I spent at least a couple trying to figure out how to get the Mac version of the sound recorder to be available on my Android phone and was unhappy that I needed to purchase an iPhone to make that work. I love the app on Mac, but I need to be able to use it on my phone. - Also, consider adding assignments where we are to create a specific SSA (Selfie-Speak Audio) recording. Maybe give us a sample script in text and let us modify it and then record it. - For the TikTok video, it seems to clash with the section of decluttering your life with social media. Maybe fortify that video with "I know I told you to declutter this area of your life, but I think the payoff here is X and the ditches to avoid are Y and Z and this is a practical way to avoid those ditches."

Simple, motivating ideas how to organize and declutter your life. I like that all tinny areas were covered, not only house, but backyard, garage, attic... than digital space, mind, body... However I do thing it can be shorten as there are a lot of repeating, for example videos about how to record your SSP (video 30 and video 94).... I listened majority of the course on high speed to save time....

I really appreciated the holistic approach towards clutter and how it affects each and every aspect of your life. A cluttered home, is usually along with a cluttered mind, a cluttered lifestyle and bad habits. It made me feel motivated, and without judgement, pushed me into organizing my surroundings and the way I'm living my life. (Though I gotta say that the no mobile/computer one hour before sleeping rule was harder than I thought to implement lol).

The downloadable SelfieSpeaks audios are the real gems in this course. I have read Marie Kondo, The Home Edit, Melisa Maker's book. TJ goes deeper into our subconscious with SelfieSpeak method. Google calendar allows me to upload an audio into a recurring daily calendar item. There are three audios downloadable in this course. One to control your stuff, one to control your cellphone and one for your diet. TJ recommends his student to make their own and listen to it in one go once a day. For now, I just use his the audios and listen to them separately in the morning, afternoon and evening. At first, I struggle with the length of this course especially "control your diet" section. I slept through some of the the videos. But, I rerun them multiple times and still slept through it. I am glad I did it, because the lessons are very good tips that I cannot get from the books I read and mentioned above. Also at first, I am annoyed by the lack of quizzes in this course (causing me to sleep through the diet section). But, then I realized this course does not need quizzes, because the SelfieSpeak summarizes the most important part of the section.

This course came to me at the right perfect time! Three months ago, I started a decluttering process of downsizing from a fully furnished two bedroom apartment after my roommate of five years gave me her notice in July, to a small room with some, but limited storage. This course goes even a little deeper than the awesome Minimalism course I took to assist me with the large transition at that time. TJ explores the finite cobwebs of clutter, in all it's many aspects, so that one can take it to the next level. This was an excellent course, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about organizing their lives on all levels! ~ Shelly Lynn johnston
