This unique course is modeled on The Safe Dog Handbook to arm you with the skills, resources and knowledge to protect your pups in the real world; react confidently and intelligently in a life-threatening emergency; and enhance your profile credentials to help you stand out in the highly competitive marketplace of pet care providers.
My approach to dog safety has been praised by top veterinarians, pet insurance companies, national humane organizations and countless dog parents. You'll learn the same skills I cover in my hands-on workshops and more — because here on Udemy, I'm also able to incorporate amazing teaching tools such as video clips of real emergencies, guest experts and a bonus e-book download. Plus plenty of adorable dog action!
You'll learn:
How to perform pet CPR, plus life-saving first aid skills for choking, heatstroke, bleeding, car accidents, accidental poisonings and more
How to read a dog's vital signs
How to handle encounters with aggressive dogs while out walking
How to spot a bloating dog
Which car restraints provide the best protection
What apps and numbers to have on your smartphone
How to create a dog-safe home and outdoor environment
How to prevent accidents and prepare for a successful outcome BEFORE an emergency happens
Extra precautions for puppies
The course is broken up into concise, single-topic lessons, so you can go at your own pace. The format includes video demonstrations with my beautiful senior Labrador Taiga, lectures, hands-on practice exercises, and printable handouts. When appropriate, I provide deeper explantations about various emergencies so you'll not only learn how to spot the signs and what actions to take, but also WHY you're doing it — to help you better retain the knowledge and skills to react in a stressful situation. I worked closely with leading vets throughout the development of this course to ensure that each lesson, demonstration and handout is accurate, up-to-date and veterinarian-approved.
Please note that each student will receive a certificate of completion issued by Udemy upon completion of the course.
I am no longer able to issue personal certificates from The Safe Dog on this platform — they are only available when the course is purchased through my training website.
**This course is not intended to replace veterinary advice. Always seek prompt veterinary care in an emergency. While every caution was taken to provide safe recommendations based on the standard accepted methods of pet first aid, it is impossible to predict the outcome of their use. Melanie Monteiro assumes no liability for any harm arising from the use of these techniques, and students should exercise personal judgement when applying them.

So far I have learned the comprehensive benefits of a dog first aid kit, how my smart phone can be used throughout my pets life to help with reminders and contact info, and how to make an impromptu muzzle. The section on Bloat taught me a lot as I was unaware of this condition, and worry I may have had a dog experience minor bloat in the past.

This course is clear, concise and affordable. Recommended for those that want a detailed First Aid course, but are short on time. There is no required certification renewal fee, but it is recommended that you review the training regularly. Unlike most animal First Aid training, there is no extensive final exam. Take advantage of the fact that you can review the course anytime after completion. Additional photos and videos of animal vital signs, warning signs, bloat, bleeding and wound care would improve this course.

yes ABC's plz follow with what the ABC's stand for (spaced repetitive learning)each time you reference them. many young people are not familiar with the staying alive song. the pdf's would be great if printed all on one page or available to cut or print in index sized cards for easy lamination for 1st aid bag

I really loved this course and I took note of everything! I had already done a first aid course in my own country (Brazil), but this one helped me a lot more, cause it covers things in a much richer way. I gotta say that cracking up with Melanie's well timed witty jokes made it that much better. Even tho there's a lot of info to take in, it was fun to watch and I feel a lot better equipped to deal with any situation that might occur while walking my dogs or any of my clients' pets (I'm trying to be a DogWalker btw). Thank you!

This information is exactly what I needed! I am a pet parent and have been for the pas 3 years. I am also a new pet sitter as of 4 months ago. I type very slowly, due to an injured hand from holding the leash incorrectly. So, this is not only helpful but oh so timely to prevent this injury from happening again.

I choose to take this course after looking at many different Dog CPR, First Aid courses from other companies. I choose this one for the facts of real life examples. The reason for taking the CPR and First Aid is i am pet sitter and it somthing i need to know how to do. I love the fact i can go back at anytime and check my skills.

The instructor is clearly well versed in pet first aid, has had years of experience with animals, and is confident in her knowledge to teach effectively to others. She not only covers the immediate information one expects from a PFA course (CPR, wound dressing, first aid kit contents) but goes into depth on items one would not always think about concerning pet safety (visiting dog parks, pet proofing a home, common items that lead to pet danger) and clears up misconceptions (all car harnesses are equally as good as any other). Thank you, Melanie!

This course had a good format and lots of practical information. The handouts are helpful to have on hand in case you forget a piece of information and easy to read and understand. It is also helpful to be able to listen or watch a lecture more than once to pick up on information that may not have been fully understood or heard the first time around. I would recommend this course to others interested in canine first aid.
