Course Description

This course is perfect if you're looking for entry-level course to learn data modeling and relational database table design.

Its singular purpose is to teach you relational database logical design using simple to understand English.  We'll walk though modeling requirements, building the conceptual data model, and logical database model.  Finally we create scripts to create the physical tables.  If you looking to understand data architecture, then you'll find this course very practical!

Join me as we work through Lou's, the owner of several pizza shops, to model, design and create a database he can use to track is business.

In this Course you will Learn to:

  • Create a conceptual data model based on Lou's Pizza Shops' requirements.

  • Use ER (Entity-Relationship) diagrams to model and design database tables and relationships between one another.

  • Appreciate and design around data modification anomalies.

  • Identify a properly formed database table.

  • Answer common interview questions related to relational database normalization and data architecture.

  • Spot a poorly designed table.

  • Communicate with others about table design.

  • Finally understand those confounding normalization rules!

  • Identify database normalization issues within our design and know how to fix them.

  • Use an ERD (Entity Relationship Diagram) to create database scripts.

Nothing is worse than

  • Being excited to learn something new but not knowing where to start.

  • Wasting time learning the wrong features.

  • Being overwhelmed with options and not know which to use.

Imagine Having...

  • Knowledge - Knowing how to quickly understand database design to take your SQL to the next level.

  • Confidence - Feeling good that you’re on the right track.

  • Accomplishment - Having a sense of accomplishment that you've learned something most cannot.

  • Fun - Having fun learning databases!

By the time you’ve completed this course you’ll be able to design and implement relational databases using tables, keys, relationships, and SQL commands in MySQL, PostgresSQL, and SQL Server to meet user and operational needs.

Good content overall. It gave me a good foundation as a beginner. A good next course would be a course full of just practice exercises where student do the exercise and you go over the solution and why that is the best solution.

The perfect and excellent course which I have been looking for a while and I have really enjoyed the course. Very much valuable things I have learnt. I have never seen a data modelling course like this one. It starts with the clear business requirements and how this can be practically (believe me its real hands on practice) translated into Conceptual Data Model, ER diagram (Logical Data Model) and Physical Data model along with the practical examples of using Normalisation techniques.

This is an awesome course! The teacher explains so clear and makes it easy to understand! I love that the course is designed with an easy-to-understand life example and the step-by-step walk-through! It would be better if the course could be introduced under the context of data engineering courses or sql developer courses, etc.

This is all the most basic things to get start with Database Design. Exactly what I'm looking for, a guild line for working DB. Steps and Examples are easy to understand and most of all -> not a super long course, get direct to the key point.

Kris was very clear on how to create ER diagrams for databases. I learned how to create the database tables from the ER diagrams because of his clear instructions.

By Luis Felipe Posada on 10/20/2023

Very good introductory course. Hands on and practical, I learned a lot, and very valuable. I will have it as reference for the future.

By Mark benson on 5/3/2023

Its a good course but a couple of comments - needs to ensure accuracy/correctness of what is being presented and more visual examples would be beneficial for the theoretical aspects as being presented.

By Mohammad Saber on 12/28/2022

Cons: Good pace Database normalization is well explained Pros: No explanations about logical and physical data models Suggestion: Add a high level review of different table design methods like "Hierarchical data models", "Object-oriented data models", and "Dimensional data models ". Therefore, students will understand what is covered and what is not covered, what is more out there to learn.

Looking to refresh SQL knowledge. Not to create databases, but to know how. I am more interested in query and reporting done remotely.

By Farid Ishak on 11/27/2022

Loved the course, good and understandable. Needed to learn the basics. Some small remarks (these do not reflect the quality of the lectures!!!): 1. Some sentences are incorrect (Quizes and Assignments). (like Quiz 2, Question 4 and Assignment 3 question 4) 2. Quiz 3 question 1; good answer is Row? While question is, what is not required in a table 3. Quiz 3 question 5; question is repeated in the answer 4. Quiz 3 Q1,5,8, Maybe add the word 'When' at the beginning of the answers (I had to double back between question and answer, it was confusing). 5. Quiz 3 question 9; transitive is by definition not the same but there is a relation, so when you mention 'the same' and then ask a true or false it is confusing. Take care! Warm regards, Farid
