Course Description

Wireshark can be intimidating. I remember how it felt when I first started looking at a trace file with Wireshark. Questions started flooding into my mind:

What should I look for? Where do I start? How can I find the packets that matter? What filters should I use? What is "normal"?

I froze under the weight of all the detail in the packets.

If you have ever felt that way when looking at a pcap, this is the course for you!

Throughout this course, we are going to look at real-world examples of how to practically use Wireshark to solve network problems. This skill will help all IT engineers to improve in their analysis and troubleshooting skills. Labs have been designed with participation in mind. Download the trace file, try your hand at the questions that go along with it, and see if you can solve the network puzzle in the packets.

While learning the art of packet analysis, we will also explore the Wireshark interface, configure custom columns, filters, and coloring rules, learning how to customize the layout so we can spot problems fast. This course will give you comfort with the Wireshark interface and the experience you need to understand core protocols.

My name is Chris Greer and I am directly affiliated with the Wireshark Foundation. I teach packet analysis for companies all over the globe. In this course, I bring real-world examples to every lecture, exercise, and course assignment. My goal is for you to get comfortable with the Wireshark interface, learn to interpret the packets, and find actionable data that will help you to resolve problems or spot security incidents faster.

Excelent course, I love how simply were things explained. Sometimes I would appreciate graphical emphasizing. Like in topics like sequence and acknowledgment numbers. When actually people see it on for example arrows I think it's better understandable

This is one of the best hands-on networking courses I’ve taken. The instructors explain Wireshark in a clear, practical, and engaging way, making even complex networking concepts easy to understand. I especially appreciated the real packet captures and step-by-step demonstrations, which helped me build confidence in analyzing network traffic. As someone pursuing a career in cybersecurity and networking, this course has significantly improved my understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, packet analysis, and troubleshooting. The practical exercises and explanations made the learning experience enjoyable and highly valuable. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in networking, cybersecurity, SOC analysis, or IT support. A huge thank you to David Bombal and Chris Greer for creating such an excellent learning experience!

I'm a junior network engineer, this class is amazingly organized and easy to understand. It helps me get confort with Wireshark environment and different kinds of common network protocols. The video recording / presentation equipments are professional. Learnt a lot from this course, thanks.

Very detailed, well paced. I particularly enjoyed the lab elements, pausing the video than diving in to the packet file to find the answers to the lab questions. The course was worth checking out and has given me a deeper understanding of whats actually going on on the Wire!

It was great, simplified and informative, however, it would be better if in addition to the perfect packets you explain with, to explain also using amount of messy packets also, reflecting what to expect in the real world. What I'm trying to say that lecturer (teachers) always tend to explain and give clean straight forward examples, which does not prepare the person for the real world situation. It would be better to add some messy and troubling packets examples from the real world also. Thanks very much for this simplified way of explaining it really help as start to the wireshark journy.

It's impressive how much information is covered in less than five hours. Wireshark is a great tool, and the course explains several key functionalities and protocols. This is not a beginner’s course. If you can’t explain the difference between TCP and UDP, describe the TCP handshake, or understand DNS and DHCP flows, it’s better to start with another networking course or a YouTube video first.

Great Course. I'm an Confirmed Network Engineer and I joined this course to learn how I can use wireshark better because this tool seems to be very powerfull. With this course I learned lot of useful options and configuration on wireshark. Also, I learned some deep and very specific network aspect. So it is a double suprise ! Thanks Chris for the quality of this course.

I highly recommend Chris Greer's Wireshark course on Udemy. Chris has a unique talent for making deep packet analysis both accessible and practical. The way he breaks down complex traffic patterns into clear, actionable insights is invaluable. I would love to see more courses like this from Chris in the future—his teaching style is exactly what is needed for anyone looking to master network forensics!

By Timothy Udumula on 3/9/2026

Chris does a great job breaking down the complex parts of Wireshark. I enjoyed the whole course, only wish that there were more scenarios for section 10. A must watch if you are starting out your journey with Wireshark.
