Course Description

Impressionist painting with a focus on light. Bring a luminous quality to your paintings you've never thought possible. Learn how to build a painting in one sitting, "alla prima", and how to savor interesting brushwork. You will also learn the invaluable concepts of drawing, value, color, and edges. Use these methods and knowledge to start your painting off right if you're a total beginner, or to take your painting style to the next level if you're more experienced. You've never painted like this before.

You can paint along with me during this entire course. I even have a camera angle that shows my palette as I'm mixing colors. You will learn crucial painting techniques in the process of creating a beautiful painting. Or feel free to just sit back and enjoy the show as I create a painting from scratch.

The reference photo I'm using is provided, as well as a materials list. You're free to use your own style of materials of course, but I'll list every single thing I use. I also provide a PDF flipbook showing each stage of the painting, so you can flip through quickly and see how the painting builds with each stage.

This course is partial toward using oil paint, and I highly recommend it, however you can use acrylics also. Many of the concepts I discuss in this course apply to all mediums of art.

So take this course if you're ready to improve your painting with methods you've probably never seen before, and will have you thinking about painting in a new way. For all levels of painters. Who this course is for:
  • Beginner painters who want to have good foundational skills from the start
  • Intermediate painters who want to learn more advanced techniques
  • Advanced painters who want to learn more about Impressionism, or to get fresh ideas and inspiration
  • Any painter who wants to watch a skilled painter in action, up close, and hear about every brushstroke, process, thought, and material
  • Anyone who enjoys watching someone create a beautiful painting from scratch

I've been passionate about telling stories through art since I was a kid. In my home in Orange County, California, I used to watch Bob Ross (the afro-wearing painter of "happy little trees" on public access TV) and I would mimic his paintings using crayons. I grew up knowing that creating art would always be my life's endeavor. I was never fortunate enough to pursue a formal art education, but I've more than compensated by private study with accomplished instructors, collaborating with highly-esteemed local artists, and devouring countless art books and videos. The art instructor who had the most profound impact on my technique was impressionist master Vadim Zanginian. Private study with Vadim in Los Angeles, California completely reinvented everything I knew about painting, and I attribute much of my current success to working with Vadim. The both of us being musicians as well, and tireless fans of the Beatles, each painting day would end with me on the guitar and Vadim on the piano as we sang away the hours with old Beatles songs. I've discovered that my favorite subject to paint is light itself, which means that anything in the world becomes my favorite thing to paint, if the light is pretty enough. I love to paint exotic locations (like Italy and Africa), New York skylines, Colorado landscapes, coffee, people, horses, birds, dogs, ice cream, you name it. My main medium is oil paint on canvas. My style could be classified as Impressionist, however I feel I'm somewhat of a

Awesome technique. The fact that everything is described in detail is so helpful. I hope more classes will be offered.

Très bon professeur, intéressant et explique tres bien...cependant nous avons une bande de sous titres qui est très grosse et qui bloque la vue sur l'œuvre en cour...pas mal achalant

Love this course! Honest, straightforward, inspiring instruction. Although I've done courses on painting before - I needed to refresh my memory since those were a long time ago. I like Christopher's style and demonstration and I've learnt tips and techniques that I had never known. I especially like his pace and ability to finish an oil painting in one sitting. I am in the process of reviewing the entire course before starting on my painting and I'm sure I'll derive even more value from it when getting down to the process. Thanks for a great course!

He is an awesome and knowledgeable teacher. The course was a lot of fun and he explained some things I never heard elsewhere such as the properties of white and black. I would definitely take more courses from him!

When I was young, I used enjoy art as well as read endless amounts of fantasy. Somewhere between childhood and a busy adult life, all of that fell by the wayside. Well, Game of Thrones brought back fantasy and Christopher brought back painting! I mean I'm just an IT guy checking out some Udemy courses for something other than computers and certifications for once and this particular painting course got me since I love Fall.

Its a great, short and to the point course with nice sized lectures that afterwards you can actually be surprised at your finished product. I think the best parts for me were seeing how the light source/effect is created and maybe also which types of paint to use. I don't have any criticisms, but if you're an expert already, you'd probably need a more advanced course.

So looks like I've finally regained a hobby - Impressionism! As time permits I'll be taking more of his classes to see what techniques are used for building structures rather than just nature. Thanks Christopher!

I am inspired to give this painting a try! I love the play of light and the freshness of color! The explanations and the limited color palette were well done. I look forward to absorbing this information and freeing up my technique.

Clear, informative and useful information. He gives a lot of good tips that I have not gotten in other teachings. His style is easy and open. Very good at relating the basics of impressionism.

Pretty great course. It's a bit short because he creates the entire painting very quickly. A lot of aha moments for me. I'm new to oils but I love impressionism and have wanted to try. I feel like this will give me a good boost in confidence to try this.

Great on detail, and surprisingly more simple that I expected. Friendly instructor, with a sense of humour.

I haven't yet attempted the painting, but watched the whole class to see what was required. Now I will collect together the materials needed, and will soon follow the instructions. If it turns out close to Christopher's I will be happy.

Instructions and videos good on detail, takes away the fear of attempting oils for the first time.

Thank you Christopher

This is a good working example and lots of good details. I think the value study at the beginning and how he did that were very helpful to understanding how to use the example to recreate an original work of art.

By Humberto Gonzalez

I like the relatively simple way of explaining and demonstrating each step throughout the painting. I would wish to see his source photograph and compare it to the final painting. Thanks, it was also very enjoyable.
