Course Description
Learn 15 practical steps on integrating risk management into decision making, business processes, organizational culture and other activities!
This course is not about doing risk assessments, building risk registers, heat maps or risk reports. None of these things have anything to do with proper risk management. This is what I call risk management 1 – risk management for external stakeholders (Board, auditors, regulators, government, credit rating agencies, insurance companies and banks). This course is about alternative, different take on risk management, it's about risk management 2 – risk management for the decision makers inside the company.
If there is one thing I learned in my previous role as Head of Risk of a multibillion-dollar sovereign investment fund, risk management is not about managing risks. It’s about helping management make strategic, operational and investment decisions with the risks in mind.
It sounds simple enough, but it’s anything but. Here are some of the lessons I had to learn the hard way:
A. Thinking about risks is not natural
B. Individual and corporate risks are not the same
C. Business decisions happen every day, not once a quarter
D. Integrating into business processes means knocking on people’s doors
Over the years, risk managers have tried various ways to get the business units to participate in the risk management process. Some simplified the risk identification and assessment methodologies, others complicated them. The result in both cases was the same – disappointment. Best case scenario – annual or quarterly risk assessments were perceived as a necessary evil with most employees ignoring them and few actively resisting.
Did it for example ever strike you as odd, that risk management is supposed to be a support function, yet business units are constantly required to provide the information to the risk managers and not the other way around? It almost feels like the business is there to support risk managers in doing their job.
Maybe, just maybe, it is time for the risk managers to stop living in a universe, where the business is regularly required to provide information, participate in risk assessments and to contribute to lengthy discussions about risk mitigation. After all, this does not make business sense. Why would business units take the time away from making money to supply risk managers with all this information? The only logical answer is because they must, it’s a compliance issue. And this is where it gets interesting, risk managers have for years been telling us that it’s not about compliance, it’s about generating business value. Something doesn’t add up. If an activity takes time and resources and doesn’t have an immediate impact on business decisions or business processes, something is clearly wrong.
Join me to discover how to integrate risk management principles into day to day decisions, change how investments are done, change how strategy and budgets are set and change the very culture of the organization.

Risk management is one of the areas that has not been given adequate attention in my group, often investment decisions are taken without the underlying assumptions being adequately tested for what could go wrong. The result has been that the outcome in most cases is so different to what was expected and stakeholders always battle to understand what went wrong. The course is a risk eye opener, it is very valuable.

Not really. There is quite a bit of discussion around "failure" and how difficult it is to get management to see the value in Risk Management. One when the perception is "failure" the reaction is usually defensive or dismissive. This course was not helpful in taking a positive and applying soft skills when working with resistant executive management.

I would suggest proposing a fast track version of this training that cuts through the repetitions and goes straight to the point. Also, I am looking for more details regarding the tools and techniques proposed (quantification, decision trees) and I do not find it.

I like the mindset of the speaker. It really challenges the status quo and the classical 3rd line of defense structure. I agree with him that R1 processes do not give value to business aside from audit. It is becoming a tick-in-a-box activity for Risk and 1st line. Admittedly, to transcend to a reporting and facilitator role to a challenger role, skillset should be upgraded.

I really find the course both informative and helpful. I must say that a large part of the course is thought provoking as it challenges the concepts established in the traditional risk management approach ("RM1") but at the same time offers an alternative approach ("RM2"). The coverage of the course is supported by related studies and research in the field of risk perception which makes it unique and insightful as it tackles how humans deal with risks in real life and the role of cognitive bias plays into it. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking to improve their existing risk management program and for those who are making high stake decisions. For the next iteration of the course, it would be helpful to provide a case study as an example to support and reinforced the concepts in RM2. Thank you, Alex Sidorenko for sharing your knowledge and expertise on this course!

With the introduction is very clear that a company is not always willing to introduce risk management at all levels, but in the other hand is a process that a manager or the person in charge have to develop carefully so the rest of the people could integrate and understand the positive perspective of it. I do appreciate this course, it was very useful, very realistic and in some way pretty much clear of how companies deal with Risk Management

Course is good but need to more focus on elaboration of point in words as written format & Need to put question after every chapter so that learners can analyse itself of every chapter then proceed for next chapter.

A very comprehensive course and would highly recommend. I would suggest that you take additional notes when you listen to the presentation as the additional points which are mentioned are not on the slides, I guess this makes the learning more engaging- however you will be stopping and starting the video a thousand times. In addition, this is a very easy listen as the accent of the speaker is very good, unlike a lot of other courses that I have come across in the past.
