Introduction to Corporate Finance (Mergers & Acquisitions) (Udemy.com)

M&A, Capital Raising, Capital Markets, Debt Financing, Equity Financing and more

Created by: Scott Powell

Last updated February 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 10,861 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, 92 minute primer on corporate finance from Corporate Finance Institute, broken into 30 short lectures across six sections: an overview, business valuation, M&A, debt financing, equity financing, and a closing section on careers and interviews. It suits finance or accounting students and people weighing a move into investment banking, FP&A or corporate development who want the vocabulary and the map before committing to anything longer.

The instruction, from CFI co-founder Scott Powell, gets credit from reviewers for clear, concrete explanations, and a couple of reviewers single out the careers section and the outline of ways into the field. With 4.5 stars from about 10,900 reviews and 85,000 students, the reaction is steady rather than ecstatic: nearly as many people give it four stars as five. The complaints are consistent. Videos are short, so some topics feel skimmed. There are no worked examples, quizzes or exercises, and one reviewer wanted more plain-language explanations of the jargon. It was published in 2017 and has not been updated since.

Because it costs nothing and takes an evening, the value case is easy. Treat it as a taster, not training. Next to the Complete Financial Analyst Course in our Business list, this is the quick, free option that covers far less ground but asks for almost no time. Recommended for anyone deciding whether corporate finance is a path worth pursuing, and as a fast refresher before an interview.

Best forFinance students and career changers who want the corporate finance vocabulary and a map of the field in one evening.
Skip it ifYou want worked examples, models to build, or anything deeper than a survey. This is definitions and overviews, not practice.

Pros

  • Free, and the whole thing runs about an hour and a half across 30 bite-sized lectures.
  • Reviewers call the explanations clear and concrete, good for a recap or a first pass.
  • The careers and interview section gives newcomers a map of the roles and how to get in.
  • Comes from CFI, whose co-founder Scott Powell has trained staff at large banks.

Cons

  • No worked examples, quizzes or exercises; two three-star reviews ask for practical cases.
  • Videos are short, so one four-star reviewer found some topics left underanalysed rather than explained in depth.
  • Published in 2017 and never updated, with no certificate on completion.
Introductory course, great to recap general corporate finance topics, while still providing enough detail in some of the sections.

Labeled beginner, but it assumes basic finance and accounting; total newcomers will need to look up terms.

I rated 4 star because I have really learned a whole lot which is quite amusing to me considering the fact that I have been thought before and i didn’t discover all of this , but I hope this continues to peak my interest till the end

Excellent course. It is concrete and very informative. Sometime It needs extra investigation to have a full understanding of the topic, but the content is really good.

Great overview into Corporate Finance and outline of career road. I left with a clear view of the various aspect that I would like to delve deeper into.

By Angela De Jesus on 1/20/2026

It discussed every finance term, but it would be better to explain such in layman's terms.

By Umar Bin Yasin on 1/9/2026

Really good and clear instruction about basics of corporate finance however I feel like the videos are a little too short hence some topics are left underanalysed or not explained in the necessary depth

By Rereloluwa Akintola on 10/13/2025

His teaching is great and easy to understand, but I especially like how he mapped out a career path for beginners. That was really thoughtful.

By Handly Theophat on 10/2/2025

Yes, I understand much better than the other courses I've begun
