Course Description
New to cross-border payments and struggling to connect SWIFT messages, correspondent banks, FX, settlement, and ISO 20022?
This practical beginner course gives you a clear, structured foundation.
Cross-border payments are central to global banking, corporate treasury, fintech, and payment operations—but they can feel complex when you first encounter multiple currencies, intermediary banks, settlement accounts, and payment-message standards.
In this course, you will learn how an international payment moves from an ordering customer to a beneficiary. You will understand the role of correspondent banks, SWIFT BIC codes, nostro and vostro accounts, foreign exchange, and payment settlement. You will also learn how commonly used SWIFT messages such as MT103 and MT202 support the payment journey.
Rather than memorising message fields without context, you will first build the business understanding needed to interpret real payment scenarios. You will then explore serial and cover payment methods using practical examples, so you can understand why different banks and messages are involved in a cross-border transaction.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Explain the end-to-end lifecycle of a cross-border payment
Describe the role of SWIFT, BIC codes, correspondent banks, and intermediary banks
Understand nostro and vostro accounts and their role in settlement
Distinguish between serial and cover payment flows
Understand the purpose and high-level structure of MT103 and MT202 messages
Identify common cross-border payment challenges, including cost, speed, transparency, and compliance
Understand why ISO 20022 matters for the future of cross-border payments
Participate more confidently in payments projects, business discussions, and stakeholder conversations
This course is designed for aspiring and early-career Business Analysts, Product Owners, Project Managers, payment operations professionals, banking consultants, fintech professionals, and students who want a practical introduction to international payments.

Overall pretty good. One small feedback though. When explaining cover message MT103 if would be good to mention the location of all these banks and correspondant banks before anything else. Explain the scenario briefly first that a user in Indian wants to send USD to another user in Spain. Else we may not know why 2 correspondant banks are needed in the first place.

Outstanding course!!! It was great learning about the MT and MX messages pertaining to cross border payments. Finally was able to learn the difference between Serial and Cover payments. The graphics and explanations were helpful. The narration, sound and content were clear and crisp. Because I loved this course so much, here is my feedback as to what I would have loved for Rachit to cover: 1) Show internal book transfers (when Remitting bank and Beneficiary bank are both clients of the correspondent bank. Would have loved to hear about the MT103 scenarios. 2) The USD example shown was excellent. I would have loved to see other payments in other currencies like GBP, EUR, HKD, INR etc. And why USD reigns supreme. 3. I would have loved to see the flow of funds/settlement of funds/MT message movement if the remitting bank’s correspondent did the FX conversion. For example, a USD payment initiated by a U.S. bank to be sent to a beneficiary in Australia receiving AUD. 4. Examples of payment flows with the different charge codes: BEN, SHA and OUR. Would have loved to see/hear about comeback claims that can happen from the beneficiary bank’s correspondent back to the remitting bank’s correspondent (MT191). 5. On the Cover Payment examples, they were USD to USD payments (local domestic payments). Would have loved to see a clear distinction as to when a payment becomes a cross border payment. 6. Difference between person to person payments vs. commercial payments. And the concept of Dodd Frank payments and importance of disclosure/upfront fees. The use of “CTR” codewords in the SWIFT message for Dodd Frank payments.

Taking the Cross-Border Payments course was a transformative experience for me. It aligned perfectly with my professional interests and personal curiosity about how money moves across borders — not just technically, but strategically and compliantly.

Having prior experience with cross-border payments, I was already familiar with many of the concepts covered in the course. However, I was impressed by how clearly and effectively the material was explained. It's an excellent resource, especially for those new to the industry. Highly recommended!

I believe this is one of the best course on understanding how payments work . Also the other course by Rachit on payments is great as well. The suggestions available on the top courses on this subject are not as great. This is the best course on understanding Swift MESSAGES. Thanks for this Rachit Sharma.

Thanks a lot Rachit for creating such well-structured balanced course on Cross Border Remittances. Covering such info just under 3 hours is commendable. Would really appreciate if you could publish more such content on the overall Payments Domain. It's definitely a value add to all those who are keen to learn more about this industry.

The course allow to achieve a very good understanding of the basics of cross border payments. The content is clear and complete although the sections related to the Swift messaging are complex to follow. It could be useful to present additional concepts and examples related to correspondent banking: e.g. how routing works or more detail on how fees work.

An amazing course. This is the first course i have finished in Udemy since i started. No unnecessary jargons. Explained the concepts in a simpler manner is much appreciable for BA like me who has no experience in payment but to work in a Payments domain. Would expect more courses from this instructor.

There is some good information given but the presentation can be improved with simple slide animation. This will help in situations where "refer to previous slide" scenarios. Animation can be used to trace between prev and current slide. Thanks.

The course is good and cover good topics for anyone looking to understand cross border payment. I am working in cross border payments and I believe that topics like RMA and Accounting relationship should have been covered with more depth and should be linked/mapped as to why we use Serial or Cover payment method. However, this course is still better than many cross border payment courses. Appreciate it!!!
