Course Description

Blockchain is a revolutionary technology that allows for decentralized and distributed storage of information. Maybe the hottest topic at the moment in the field of software engineering - besides artificial intelligence and machine learning - is blockchain technology. Many experts in the industry predict that the blockchain will disrupt the ways we interact with technology.

In this course you will learn about the basics of blockchain technology as well as about cryptocurrencies. You can learn about the concrete implementation of these technologies in Java - although you can skip the implementation parts if you wish.

Chapter 1 - Blockchain Theory

  • the fundamental basics of blockchain technology

  • SHA-256 hashing technique

  • centralized and decentralized ledgers

  • the concept of mining (and miners)

  • consensus algorithms

  • proof of work (PoW) and proof of stake (PoS)

  • the byzantine generals problem

Chapter 2 - Blockchain Implementation

  • implementing a simple blockchain from scratch in Java

Chapter 3 - Cryptocurrency Theory

  • motivation behind cryptocurrencies

  • Merkle trees and transaction verification algorithms

  • mining in cryptocurrencies

  • mempools

  • unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs)

  • elliptic curve cryptography in cryptocurrencies

  • what is a wallet?

  • orpahned blocks and the block verification problem

  • the 51% attack

  • soft fork and hard fork

Chapter 4 - Cryptocurrency Implementation

  • implementing a simple cryptocurrency from scratch in Java

Chapter 5 - Altcoins & Cryptocurrency Evolution

  • Ethereum, Solidity and the Ether cryptocurrency

  • what are ICOs?

  • cardano and ADA

  • altcoins

  • LiteCoin (LTC)

  • Dash

  • layer 1 and layer-2 scaling solutions

  • sharding and rollups (zk-rollups and zk-snarks)

  • coins and tokens

You should take this course, if you are interested in blockchains and cryptocurrency technology. Thanks for joining my course, let's get started!

Holczer Balazs

My name is Balazs Holczer. I am from Budapest, Hungary. I am qualified as a physicist. At the moment I am working as a simulation engineer at a multinational company. I have been interested in algorithms and data structures and its implementations especially in Java since university. Later on I got acquainted with machine learning techniques, artificial intelligence, numerical methods and recipes such as solving differential equations, linear algebra, interpolation and extrapolation. These things may prove to be very very important in several fields: software engineering, research and development or investment banking. I have a special addiction to quantitative models such as the Black-Scholes model, or the Merton-model.

Take a look at my website if you are interested in these topics!

Being an experienced developer in various languages including Java, but knowing nothing about blockchain nor cryptocurrencies, I find this course very accessible. It manages to be both didactic and to provide enough details on a implementation for a single day course that is simple yet functional to understand concepts.

The theoretical portion is excellently articulated, covering all necessary topics comprehensively. I highly recommend it. However, it's important not to set excessively high expectations for the practical implementation.

Very insightful, however the Elliptic Curve Cryptography was confusing at times. I didn't quite understand why this method of developing keys was chosen compared to others, however it was still interesting to learn.

I was engaged right from the beginning. The pace, the in-depth explanations, and real implementation kept me even from taking breaks. I would like to know how the data is propagated in the network and see actual wallets sending each other money. But, overall it was a great, well-explained course.

If you want to understand Blockchain and Cryptocurrency from a technical perspective you can do it here! Perfect course, the first time I have the feeling to understand Blockchain and Bitcoin completely.

I really enjoyed this course, it was a nice detour from my normal grind. I had been wondering how blockchain technology worked, especially in non-coin type uses, and it's clear now how almost anything could be stored and secured in a blockchain type system. Thanks very much!

The mix of theory and practice was very important to understand the real scenario of blockchain and cryptocurrency operation. I recommend this course for all people that want to start your studies about blockchain.

By David Chen on 8/14/2018

This course covers much content in a concise fashion. The instructor explained the basic mechanisms of blockchain with both generic and concrete examples. The use of Java as the coding language is both appropriate and innovative relative to other Udemy courses on the same subject. The code materials provided by the instructor was well-organized and nicely commented. The first three modules were very well operated. The last one, perhaps due to the increasing difficulty and complexity of the subject, was more challenging to grasp. The course could be improved by including additional, advanced topics that may be optional.

By Cem Guler on 8/4/2018

Most of the code is borrowed from the Medium article, but the Instructor already proves the knowledge on Blockchain technology. Great start for blockchain enthusiasts who can understand and use java language.

By Utkarsh Bisht on 6/23/2018

A truly awesome course with code explanation for every concept. Really enjoyed the course as it was great learning experience on how the system works. Using Java as tech stack to understand it helps in connecting to concept easily. I do have request to slow down pace in Cryptocurrency implementation as it will help users who may be very new to Java. And adding source code in last video of implementation segment will help in tracking and debugging code. Thanks for bringing on the course!!
