Course Description

Portraiture drawing and oil painting

You will find a number of hours of structured information, demonstrations, illustrations, tips, problem-solving, and more. There is a lot of information, and the video is worthy of repeated viewings. Juan walks you through steps of preparing your panel/canvas and transferring the drawing onto it for painting. The basic set up and palette to be used is also presented and from then, all of the main stages or a painting are demonstrated and explained to the point of completion. The course is a presentation of a process or an approach to painting a human subject. It is not a "how-to" but rather a "what and when" to paint. The main chapters are as follows:

  1. Introduction

  2. Imprimatura & Transferring the Drawing

  3. Setting the Scheme/Drawing or Composition

  4. Dead Color/Local Color & Setting the Palette

  5. Working Up or 1st Painting

  6. The Finish

  7. More Finish

- TESTIMONIALS -
"Juan was instrumental to my growth as a painter, and I would not be the artist I am today without his guidance. He's not only a great teacher but very fun and interesting with knowledge in topics beyond the visual arts that relate directly to them. He is possibly an ancient wizard, despite his age claims, he looks not a day over 40."
- David Shepherd

"I had the great pleasure of working with Juan Martinez during his tenure at the Academy of Realist Art here in Toronto. The school offered a one-week course in 'alla-prima portrait painting' with senior instructor Juan Martinez and I immediately signed up. I had been a drawer for the past 50 years, so I was relatively new to painting having only started to paint in 2003. I felt that an intensive portrait painting workshop with one of the ARA’s principle instructors would be helpful in broadening my abilities.

Day One of the workshop began with a 3-hour demo by Juan and I immediately knew I was in the right place. Not only was he a superb painter, but his explanations of the process of painting were clear and well-directed to the various student levels in the room. His understanding of light and shadow and (more importantly) his ability to pass this understanding on to his students was remarkable. Over the week I found Juan to be an excellent instructor with personal, individual help for every student and an easy-going charm in the classroom. Would I sign up for the course again? Absolutely."

I cant express enough how happy i am that i found this course. Its amazing. Nothing like any course i've ever taken. I wonder if the tutor would give us feedback or perhaps does online mentoring.? Everything is so simple amd clear. I really appreciate this course so much. Thank you.

As a portrait painter, I have seen many videos on different artist's approaches to this subject. I have watched this course more than once and have returned to certain sections recapping many times. Definitely, for me, one of the best and more informative videos. Well done.

Fantastic approach of a classical authentic style of painting a realistic portrait. As an airbrush artist who is learning oil and a combination of both mediums this course is highly recommended for anyone who has a bit of knowledge about shades and light to develop a “3D” looking portrait with the right hues and tones. Thank you and I also recommend the Practical Color Theory course from Juan . This is great for beginners but also for more experienced artists. All great value. Thanks Juan! Greetings from Spain.

What a great course. If you are interested in the classical style of portrait, this is for you. Juan is an excellent instructor. I am glad I found your courses. Excellent job! I only hope Juan have more courses like this. Was this review helpful?

the one thing i have learned, apart from almost all of ot, is to , Take your time, and try not to rush. the rest of it was so intuitivel. i need to recap, and try to do the same thing in the same time frame, though with my own photos. but all in all, good job, great teacher.

Juan is obviously a superb painter and he uses this course to explain his technique. As well as showing his overall technique he gives lots of really useful general tips about painting along the way. I don't think is really a course for a beginner but it will be very useful for people with some experience who are trying to get to the next level.

I am taking a class in oils, pastels and charcoal, it has been a long time since doing oil portraits, so this was a good review. Appreciated parts showing the paint mixing ahead of the putting brush to canvas. Had not heard of Liquine. Wasn't sure when he said the next day to make your dry oil back to wet oil to use it, but it seems like a good tip. Liked his honest approach, breaking it down, very professional and yet down to earth style. I feel more ready to jump in again! Thanks!

Vielen Dank.

So far I like the presentation of the opening remarks and I'm looking forward to the rest of the instruction. I am a Portrait Painter and I feel very at home with his presentation of the subject. At the half way mark I am well satisfied with the content of instruction and the clarity of presentation. I like the candid handling of what I call "Eye Lapse of the subject matter". All of us over look essential detail primarily because we are focused on the bigger picture. Mr Martinez handles it on a one to ne type discussion. Very instructonal up to now.
