Course Description

This course will teach you how to build a professional API platform using pure Flask, without any supplemental libraries, so that students can learn the fundamentals of RESTful API design.

In today’s world, dominated by gorgeous JavaScript user interfaces and mobile applications, the ability to build a scalable and well architected API is key to be able to supplement those applications and ensure that clients and servers communicate with the proper interfaces.

The course covers the basic concepts of the RESTful API pattern and then goes into detail and step by step building an API platform that will cover the six constraints of the architecture. Students will learn the industry-standard and will follow best practices for API architectures.

At the end of the course students will be able to design, architect and build their own RESTful API platforms, and with the deep understanding of the laws governing APIs, can go ahead and try out the API libraries available for Python and Flask, knowing the fundamentals and the advantages of using them.

If you already know the basics of Flask and you are interested in how to design, architect and build an API platform, this is the course for you.

The course is divided in 2 sections:

  • Introduction which covers all the concepts necessary to understand what is a RESTful API and its six constraints

  • A step by step explanation building a Pet Store API that will include an authentication layer, a Store endpoint and a Pet endpoint as well as search functionalities

The course has more than 5 hours of video tutorials as well as the source code at the end of each section, so that you can follow along with the coding process.

The course can take anywhere from 3 to 10 days to complete based on how much material the student completes daily.

Additionally we’re constantly updating the course, adding contents thanks to the feedback of our students.

From Zero is an educational project created by Jorge Escobar, a technologist, entrepreneur and open source fanatic with more than 15 years of experience in the development of web applications in New York City.

Jorge has worked in well established companies like Yahoo!, Univision and MongoDB and has also been the technical founding member of various successful tech startups that have received multiple rounds of venture capital.

The biggest problem Jorge has experienced during his career is finding well rounded developers and he interviewed hundreds of them for positions in the teams he was leading. A constant pattern (no matter if candidates came from a good university or had a few years of experience) was the lack of practical, real world knowledge.

That’s why Jorge created From Zero, an educational project that would address those practical knowledge issues through training that builds hands-on experience and equip students with the tools required to be successful in today’s technology business needs.

This is not so much about the information presented thus far, but more of the uncertainty I now have whether or not I will even be able to run the code in my computer. The promo page prerequisites were NOT clear enough to convey to the potential user that there are several pieces of software that nee to be installed before being able to follow along and the compatible systems. So as I go along, I am not even sure if after watching for more than 1/2 hour, if I will be able to continue until after the software installation section. Please be more transparent regarding systems requirements, and not just simply stating a computer connected to the internet.

Overall a great introduction to Flask RESTful development. I think it could have gone into a few more details, such as filtering and sorting, or how to re-use boilerplate code for simple operations, but at 4+ hours this was just the bite sized amount to refresh my skills in Flask.

The code samples are clear and concise, the explanations about the code and how they work are very good, but the reasons about why doing it are absent. I'd suggest the author to provide a section, previous to the presentation of Docker and Flask/Python, presenting the end results, how do they work and how they can be applied, so the learner knows how the current section fits the overall project.

This is one course I highly advise on. The course instructor teaches in depth how to structure your API documents and a very professional and effective way of writing code. The instructor goes ahead and builds the API using in-memory storage which is a very effective way of learning before integrating the database.

I really like how the professor explains the creation of an API, especially the testing part, since it's a very important aspect of programming that is oftentimes overlooked. It would be the perfect course to learn about APIs in Flask, but some of the libraries he uses are soon to be deprecated. I really recommend it if you know nothing about APIs.

Author assumes that students already took his docker course , but it wasn’t mentioned in the prerequisites. He said in the introductory video that if a student doesn’t know docker he’ll be explaining as we go along. But he doesn’t. He doesn’t even help with the installation. I have zero docker knowledge. I’ll learn that first. I am not new to flask but even the flask code he writes is too fast.

Another wonderful course by Jorge. Comparing to the older courses that I have taken from the same instructor, this assumes you have mastered the various concepts of Flask development and is going at a much faster pace. Advisable to take his other Flask Development courses first before taking this, not for beginners.

It was very useful to see the code developing as the course proceeded and a good learning experience following along applying the changes as the instructor demonstrated and explained them. The demonstrations of the use of the postman tool were perfect for me as I had never used that tool before. By the end I am a complete convert and will be using it from now on. Whenever I broke something in source code I was able to find my error by using Kcompare to view the diff between the downloaded archive and my local source tree. It would be useful for less experienced student to have this simple technique at least mentioned somewhere, preferable near the beginning of the course.

There's a lot of material here and Jorge doesn't mess around too much so you should definitely copy and paste the code rather than write it. I had done a Flask course before so was a little bit familiar with it and Postman and this helped. I was very pleased with the course content and the code on github which all worked - which isn't always the case. I now need to spend time to really understand what is going on but with this working example I definitely know a lot more about Flask, running tests in python and mongodb than I did before I started. Start to finish probably took about 30 hours over 4 days.

This is an excellent course on APIs in Python. I've learned several things that I was not familiar with including Pluggable Views for APIs and how to implement API tokens. It's not an introductory course and the instructor goes through the material fairly quickly but it was a perfect pace and level for me. Highly recommended.
