Learn programming by starting from zero, and create powerful projects with Python : Web, Mobile, Games, Desktop
Created by: Jonathan Roux
Last updated December 2024
Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,402 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
Jonathan Roux's course starts from zero and keeps going. It covers Python basics and objects, then HTML and CSS, a Django pizza site with a REST API, and finally desktop and mobile apps plus two bigger projects, a game called Galaxy and a beat machine called Mr Beat. That's 27.4 hours across 389 lectures. The pitch is one connected build instead of separate topics. The syllabus has no quizzes or coding exercises, so practice is up to the student.
Reviewers mostly love the teaching. Several call the explanations clear and simple, and one says they already have a client from what they learned. A reviewer who had bought 14 Udemy courses ranked this the best of them. The complaints are consistent, though. Some find the pace fast, with on-screen actions that last under a second. One beginner stalled because the command prompt and venv weren't explained, and found the CSS resizing a headache. Another says the software versions are too old, so menus and extension names no longer match.
Of 1,402 ratings, 892 are five stars and only 24 are one or two, which fits the 4.4 average. The last update was December 2024, so expect some tooling drift. Breadth is the trade: a reviewer wished for more Python libraries, another for more detail. It's a good pick for beginners who want to build real things and can look up newer menu names. Skip it if depth in one area matters more.
Pros
- Reviewers call the explanations simple and clear, and say they progress fast
- One connected build: web server, database, REST API, then desktop and mobile apps
- Project-led, with a Django pizza site, a Galaxy game and a Mr Beat audio app
- Includes HTML, CSS and responsive design, plus a portfolio site section
Cons
- Some reviewers say the pace is too fast and on-screen actions are easy to miss
- Software versions in the videos are dated, so menus and extension names have changed
- No quizzes or coding exercises, and one reviewer says command prompt and venv go unexplained
Jonathan's way of explaining and delivery work very well for me, it's easy to follow and I progress fast.
Listed for all levels, but it targets true beginners, though one newcomer needed the command prompt and venv explained first.

I like it a lot because my knowledge was just in java and with this I could know a lot from python. Only for recommendation, I would have liked if you could have shown a few more Python libraries, but otherwise everything is fine.

I tried few different courses and tutorials, until I found this one actually I first found the kivy part of this course, free on youtube. Jonathan's way of explaining and delivery work very well for me, it's easy to follow and I progress fast. I wish he would go into more detail sometimes, and there are some strange edits here and there, but overall this is an amazing course, thanks Jonathan!

The content is great and very comprehensive. The instructor is very competent both as a developer and as a teacher. He has a strong French accent that can be somewhat bothering for some people, although I personally find it very charming. One drawback I can point out is that often he writes at the bottom of the screen, and it is shadowed by the controls of the video player, and also sometimes he changes screen too quickly, and it is difficult to find the point where you can read all the code. After trying to complete the first Kivy project (Pizzas), I had to downgrade my review. The problem here is that this project requires some online resources that do not exist any more. It was pretty frustrating.

Best teacher I've got up to now on Udemy classes I've taken (Business or personal). Clear, great content, good activities. I've learned a lot. The only thing I would say is to be careful with the audio quality, the "P"s pop out a lot in the audio track making it distracting. But this is only a technical issue, nothing to do with the content or competence of the teacher.

I have have IT background, thus I am abit lose during installation. I purchase quite a bit of courses at Udemy but always face difficulty in installation. This course provide the best installation explanation to beginners. Without proper installation, I cant even start learning a course.

good course with a lot of examples. Sometimes a bit quickly about some topics. For example: An overview of the basic structure of a django project would be usefull. In the beginning, i found it rather confusing because of the large number of different files in the project. Also a bit more time to copy the code from the video. I had to pause and rewind videos a lot (more retyping in place of copy paste would help). But its for sure worth following the course

Jonathon's is the first course anyone should take to learn python and django - he carefully sets out the very important linkages/paths between urls(project), urls(app), views, templates, models, registering apps with project etc. He shows how to integrate django and python with simple html and css. It is the 'first principles' course that is what anyone learning needs. With this sound foundation, one can progress.

The author of the course is really knowledgeable. Pros: I love the way he speaks and explains. Very good exercises short and crisp content Cons: Not for absolute beginners Any new concept is not explained in detail When the course reached to PizzaMama project in Django. I feel the speaker is in such a hurry to complete the project. Very little explanation of the concepts. I am sad to leave the course in between

Overall its a good course. Its comprehensive and there is a lot of useful information. I feel the instructor goes very fast and starts editing code without explaining or even saying anything at times. It was very difficult to follow at PizzaMama and beyond. For learning the basics of python though he does an excellent job.
