Our take
Based on the ratings of 3,757 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Kristen Palana's course is a short creativity primer, about 97 minutes across 29 lectures in six sections. It is built for people who think they are not creative, and for budding artists and designers who want to get past cliche first ideas. Nothing is required beforehand. The core is a set of seven techniques, with extras on list-making, word association, visualization and the role of dreams, plus a section that samples AI tools such as ChatGPT. About 13,800 students have enrolled.
Reviews are mostly warm. The rating is 4.4 from 3,757 ratings, and more than 3,100 of them are four or five stars. Students call the techniques practical and easy to follow, and one says they suit daily work and personal projects. Another expects to use them for a workplace social media page. A few like the personal stories and the long list of resources. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the self-promotion and off-topic material distracting, and the AI and Photoshop parts bothered that person too. Another said AI would not be allowed in their job. One found most of it already familiar, and one said the recording does not look professional.
At under two hours, this works as a low-risk sampler, not a deep study. Beginners who feel stuck for ideas will get the most from it, especially artists, designers and content creators. Experienced creatives, or anyone after rigorous innovation methods for a corporate setting, will likely find it thin.
Pros

Cons

- One reviewer found most of it familiar, and another said the video quality looks unprofessional

My goal is to empower unapologetic idealists through art, design, and education.
I am an American/Portuguese interdisciplinary artist who recently returned to Italy after nearly a decade in Myanmar and Malawi. After focusing primarily on digital media and animation for over 20 years, I reconnected with my fine art roots in 2021. Inspired by the lofty mission statements of the world’s top organizations, my mixed-media drawings serve as a call to action to visualize better outcomes for our lives, communities, and the planet. My earlier animations have screened at over 75 international film festivals, earning numerous “Best Animated Short Film” awards, including at the Cannes Short Film Festival, Italy International Film Festival, and Sunscreen Film Festival.
As an educator, I've taught at universities on four continents. I created the Digital Media track of the Communication Program at The American University of Rome, where I earned tenure in 2009 and led the Film and Digital Media Program from 2013 to 2016. From 2016 to 2024, I expanded my teaching to academic institutions and NGOs in Myanmar and Malawi. When not making fine art, I work as a consultant in art, design, communication, and small business development, teaching once again at The American University of Rome while collaborating with international agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, WFP, GIZ, UNDP, and UNFPA.<

Because it offers practical, easy-to-follow techniques that helped me think more creatively and generate better ideas. The examples are simple, and the strategies are useful in daily work and personal projects. Overall, it provided good value and met my expectations.

I can relate to a lot of what is presented in this course. In particular, I had first hand experience with the Power of Dreams on multiple occasions. The strongest one was during my Masters research - the idea that caused the breakthrough in my work came to me in a dream. The rest of my work was working out the details around that idea. I attribute to that dream the fact that I was able to write my thesis and publish several conference papers in around 4 months, something that usually takes around 12-16 months. The work has later been heavily referenced by other researchers. I would be glad to share more details for anyone interested; so feel free to reach out! https://www.linkedin.com/in/samer-el-itani-44632913/

Informative and enriching course, well put together, and so many great resources. I feel that I will be using what I've learned for the rest of my life. Thank you!

Great learning, especially the first half of the course. Second half was very much focused on art content creation, which is not what I was looking for or expect after watching the first half. I really enjoyed resources and recommendations, especially the creative personality test.

The instructor was good, but this course was more geared towards Artists and Online Content Creators. The instructor uses A.I. too much (this would not be allowed in my current job). I had been looking for ways to be more innovative in my job and this course didn't really apply to what I was looking for.

Kristen engages in her lessons, gives examples and tips. Kristen spoke clearly and was animated while talking which, for me, helped to keep my focus and interest. She has a very calming voice and never rose her tone. I ended up following her on Facebook because, as I said earlier, she is engaging and offers really good tips, advice, and lessons.

Kristen Palana provides valuable insights on exercising creativity using proven techniques and facts. The course could gain a lot by incorporating more practical methods, such as Word Association, right from the beginning of the training. Unfortunately, in my case, most of the things the course offered were already familiar to me, which made it difficult for me to benefit from it fully.
By Marco VILLANI on 11/8/2020
The course is polished and concise and I like the light-hearted style. However, I think it's not as comprehensive as it could be.
By Toni Beamon on 11/1/2020
Many great exercises to improve vision with creative journaling, remaining in touch with subconscious dreams and thinking outside the box!
By Stephonie Steinruck on 10/11/2020
Very enjoyable class providing great ideas to me
