Course Description

We've all heard the story before. Mitt Romney, multi-millionaire congressman, paid an effective tax rate of roughly 14%! How is it possible that the someone making that amount of money pays a lower tax rate than most Americans?

The answer? Proper tax planning.

Proper tax planning is perhaps the most important step to the promised land of financial freedom. The strategy is simple- the more income that you generate at a tax free or a lower tax rate means the more money you get to keep. If you reinvest this money, your money works for you, generating a stream of passive income ultimately accumulating wealth.

There seems to be this misconception that the wealthy are cheating the system. This is simply not true! The wealthy simply structure their income to take advantage of the favorable provisions outlined by the government.

Anyone can apply these strategies- not everyone knows about them.

That is where this course comes in. Students will learn how to :

  • Generate passive income
  • Identify investments with the best return on tax savings and earnings potential
  • Understand loopholes of the tax system
  • Reduce their tax bill on their very next return
  • Properly plan their finances for the future
  • Build wealth in the long term

Calvin Liu

My name is Calvin and I run TaxSavingStrategy. I am a Certified Public Accountant and work full time as a tax consultant with clients ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies. I graduated with both a Bachelor's in Accounting as well as a Master's in Business Taxation.

I understand that the complexities of tax law can be a daunting task especially for those who have no background. However, if you don't at least try, you will never really know. Let me illustrate with a example from my personal life. When I decided to make TaxSavingStrategy, I had to face the daunting challenge of making a website. Coming from a business background, I have zero coding knowledge so building a website seemed impossible. I took the time to learn some basic fundamentals and the site you see today was 100% built by me. It took me a couple hours to learn the basics. I'm still not an expert and I still don't know coding; but as you can see, I was able to create a full functioning website, something that I did not think was ever possible.

Good intentions by instructor. A broad discussion, but a little too broad with not as much emphasis on investment income taxation I was hoping for. Good idea to have a beginner's level course, but a little more detail and/or references, with short quizzes to test learning would have made it better. Was particularly interested in taxation of investments - particularly stocks/bonds. It was covered, but not enough detail for me. Specifically would like to have seen clear case examples of how long term and short term capital gains and losses are subtracted against each other and taxed, and then how net losses up to 3K can be used against ordinary income. Show us some examples from brokerage 1099 forms of how this information is displayed, etc... That part is what is particularly confusing to me and not presented in any significant depth/detail. Lastly, I'd say it was a little too commercial - encouragement of an ETRADE account was repetitive, and no disclosure by instructor if he is compensated for the plugs. Encouraging students to use them for the "free financial advice" was not appropriate, as there is no advice that is free. How the financial advisor is compensated by Etrade should have been disclosed if specific brokerage going to be recommended. Also repetitive plugs for his instructional website that does not appear functional any longer when attempting to visit was a distraction.

Not much. Way too high level. The link to the resources doesn't work. Some of the stuff is wrong based on what I have read (like using income property depreciation against your ordinary income). Not sure this course was well thought out to begin with.

A lot of information condensed in one minute. It was great! Nevertheless, income tax is not done with pencil and paper anymore. There was no mention of software.

Good course, but one section title Life Insurance has a handout but not video. Also, there is reference to a website (blog) to be able to purchase a book, the website does not appear to be functioning.

What I love about this lesson is that it's all about simple concepts and strategy... It does no good to bog down the students with details and specifics. Those can be researched later and more in depth with a professional.

Thank you Calvin for taking the time to present this course in a manner where the common tax payer can grasp and understand. The financial planning was an added bonus which all tax preparers should offer but do not. I was able to dissect the tax form and prepare for future investments with minimal tax liabilities! I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to understanding the tax codes and protect your investments from the IRS.

Biggest takeaway: There is so much more to taxes than just income taxes. I took the advice to heart and now I am in contact with a financial advisor to help plan for my retirement. Cheers and happy holidays!

I can't believe I've paying taxes for countless years without truly understanding how the system works. Calvin does a great job of first explaining the background of the system and then layering on how to strategize around it. Looking forward to cutting my tax bill, thanks!
