I am starting to enjoy the course and all the exercises on writing in it.

I started typing just right out of the gate like it was a quick note that i was jotting down with no capital letters or anything lol ...then i thought, wait a minute, I bet there using this to judge if we have really learned anything (laughing). Just kidding. But really, I found this program, so far, to be more of a bargain than i originally thought. Very in depth and full with resources and examples and tricks of the trade. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in learning how to or wanting to understand concepts to this art. Thank you

A nice mix of business how to and writing how to. Might be more for those just starting out than for those actually writing, although there are suggestions and ideas which more advanced students can utilize. The instructor obviously enjoys engaging with people and has put a great deal of work into the presentations. It's not just a slide show of bullet points, which was very refreshing. She has also updated it with new content, so former students can return for a few minutes and learn a few things about more current topics.

There is such a wealth of great information on this course. It's presented by someone who really cares about the topic she teaches and is very knowledgeable. She also gives wonderful feedback on tasks you may complete. There is a lot of content covering a lot of different types of writing and how to promote and sell it. The pace is good and the links shared are helpful. It encourages you to look at a wide range of opportunities. This course has a wealth of information to support you to explore and thrive in a writing career.

I loved learning in this course and doing the exercises. It's a great starting point for freelance writers! I'm now earning money for my writing, which is a huge step forward from when I began this course last year. I've incorporated many of Philippa's tips in my daily writing ritual, and I credit this course for launching me on my writing journey!

I took this course at the recommendation of someone in a Facebook group for academics leaving academia. After a twenty-five year career as an English teacher and professor, I’m looking for a new adventure doing the kind of things I had been preparing students to do. I mention my background for credibility and perspective, of course, but I want to emphasize that I became a teacher in the first place because I love being a student, not because I already consider myself an expert. I approached this course knowing that even if I was deeply familiar with the canon, theory, pedagogy and practice of English writing, I can always learn more. Pivoting industries and moving into freelance writing are not skills I would have learned in my academic background (although I would strongly recommend them to university students), so in that aspect, I consider myself a novice. I found this course surprisingly thorough in its scope of the subject of freelance writing, and a great bargain for the price. Davies offers the kind of advice and practice I would have given to my students, especially in the earlier sections of the course, which focus on good writing habits and skills. As the course moves into more specific topics of the business of writing, I felt like I was being given lots of sound advice and options for further exploration, such that writers of diverse talents and interests should be able to find a thread or theme here that leads to their success. I appreciate the numerous resources as well. Davies herself is wonderfully helpful, too, and responds thoughtfully and promptly to assignments. I was quite surprised by that — I figured I’d be lucky to get any response. Do I have any criticisms? Nothing that would prevent me from recommending the course. I think some of the audio could be edited better as some sections were quite loud while others were rather soft. And sometimes there were things to read on the screen that were not recited and the time given to read them was usually not enough. More significantly, I would advise students to develop a plan for managing the assignments and the creation of the portfolio. You get the certificate for watching the content, not for doing the work, so you could “cheat.” I found that if I paused my viewing each time I worked on an exercise, my progress slowed waaaaay down. In fact, I stopped doing the exercises a part of the way through because I just wanted to get through the content. Now, I’m going to go back through the transcripts and the resources to do the assignments I skipped. I thought this course would take me a couple weeks — big lols. I mean, you could do that. But, I found that I often had competing interests for my time and to do the course one assignment at a time would have meant spending a lot more time each day. This isn’t a criticism, but a warning to students that the true payoff isn’t going to come from a marathon 7 hour session. Expect to live with this content for awhile.

I'm wanting to learn how to create an outlet for my writing and Philipa does a good job of walking the student through the necessary step.

It's very informative, although I am not aspiring to write novels. I am more of a blogger and non-fiction writer.
