Course Description
There's a story you keep meaning to write. It surfaces on the drive home, or in the shower, or at 3am - and then life closes over it again and you tell yourself you'll get to it one day.
This is the one day.
Your life is worth writing down. Not because it was dramatic, or tragic, or extraordinary - but because it was yours, and nobody else has lived it or made sense of it the way you have. A memoir is how you hand that meaning on: to your family, to a reader who needs exactly what you survived, or simply to yourself, so you finally understand the shape of the road you've walked.
I'm Dale, and I've written my way home more times than I can count. I know what it is to sit in front of a blank page with a whole life behind you and no idea where to start. I also know the way through - and that's what this course is.
A truth - you don't have a story problem. You have a seeing problem. The stories are already in you. What you need is someone to show you how to find them, shape them, and write them without drowning. That's the work we do together.
What you'll learn to do
Decide what kind of memoir you're writing and which slice of your life it's really about
Meet the one reader you're writing for - before you write a word, so every choice has a purpose
Mine your memories with timelines, story lists and prompts, until you have more material than you know what to do with
Understand structure the easy way - no confusing jargon, just the simple shape every good story already has
Get the words down even when the page feels impossible, using vignettes, letters, voice memos and one-story-at-a-time drafting
Write through the hard chapters without falling apart - the emotional side, handled honestly
Edit your draft into something that holds a reader, and find the golden thread that ties it all together
Navigate writing about real people - the law, and the fear of "what will they say?"
Format, design and self-publish your book on Amazon, in paperback and eBook
Step into the world as a published author
Who this is for
This is for you if you've got a life behind you and a pull to make sense of it on the page. Whether you're writing to heal, to leave a legacy, to help others with what you've learned, or simply because you can - you're in the right place. You do not need to be a writer. You need a story and the willingness to tell the truth as you see it.
And if a quiet voice is whispering "but nothing exciting has ever happened to me" - I'd gently disagree. I've never met a life that didn't hold a book. Yours holds one too. Let me prove it to you.
How we'll work
We go at a human pace, one step at a time, the way you'd eat an elephant. You'll write as you go, so by the end you won't just understand how to write a memoir - you'll have written one.
Your story has waited long enough. Let's get it out of you and onto the page, and let's do it together.
Join me for the next part of your life and writing adventure.

Hi, I'm Dale – Writing Coach. Unapologetically weird, wonderful and wise.
I'm a writing coach (yeah, that simple) who has used the pen and my journal in every aspect of life — from the darkest of personal experiences to the sharpest edges of executive leadership. I know what writing can do, because I've needed it to do everything.
I discovered early on that writing was healing, cathartic, and medicine for the soul. It has helped me through a lot of chaos — childhood sexual abuse, grooming, an alcoholic father I adored, a world of conflict at home, decades of narcissistic relationships, and multiple health crises including spinal fractures and MGUS. It also carried me through my corporate life and leadership journey. Through journaling and creative life writing, I could make sense of my world when nothing else could.
I've written books I'll never publish because they served their purpose: healing me. I co-authored Navigate, a book on executive leadership born from the collective wisdom of four practitioners. And I've learned to recognise when a story is meant to be shared as medicine for others walking similar paths.
That's what I help you do.

I am nearly finished with this course, but I am so impressed that I need to leave a review even before I am done. I have done several writing workshops and courses over the years, but I find this one to be the most practical and informative. I especially value the worksheets as I can always go back to them during the writing process. Regarding the comment of one of the previous reviewers, I am also an attorney and, despite that, find this course one of the best out there! Well done

okay. I'm a beginner 67yo who wants to write a memoir for my own interest in maybe discovering something about myself. The idea of different types of people has too much information for me to take in. I'm probably a bit of everything!

So far, and I'm completing the 4th module, I'm loving this course. I like the Dale's intuitive approach because it's aligned with my own personality. And the tools she gives for staying organized are helpful too. I'm revisiting a memoir I wrote in 2023 but I wasn't happy with it. My word count was short by 20K and I wondered the best way to edit and rewrite sections of it. I feel that this course will help me get there. The course is also delightful.

Really great course, very detailed, lots of exercises to trigger memories, gives examples of several ways to do things, as well as what has worked for her and her clients. Obviously has written a lot of books herself, uses those as examples. She is also a book coach and uses those as examples as well.

A super helpful course. I love Dale's energy and excitement as she presents and talks about writing. I have also learned so much about outlining and how important it is to plan your book. I initially just started writing, but the planning phases and exercises are helping so much to get better detail and content into my book.

This course, I believe, is titled inaccurately to appeal to someone wanting to write their life story. This seems to have extraordinarily little to do with “Writing your life story. Turning memories into memoir.” It really should be more accurately titled: How to set up a format for writing any book and publishing one. I was highly disappointed in this course: Writing your life story. Turning memories into memoir.

I took this course as a followup to the instructor's Kick Start Your Memoir course. I had written a memoir/essay collection for the first course and took this course for the editing instructions contained in it. Each of the courses can be taken separately and don't need to be taken together. This course contains a lot of good information about writing and editing your memoir. I found the lecture on setting up the text to speech function in Word particularly helpful. The course has proved to be very useful in getting my memoir ready for publication. The only problem I had with the course (and the reason I gave it a four star rating instead of a five star) was the last couple of lectures which contain information about publishing on Create Space. Create Space has been merged into Amazon's KDP, so the information is outdated.

I highly recommend this course. From prior reading and listening to other courses on real-world authorship, this author covered all of the most important points made by other authors whose work and tutoring I enjoyed and respect. Perhaps the one request one could make would be for more detail on particular areas, for example, distribution. However, as the core of the course was on writing one's memories, which the author covered and more, I was more than pleased with this course.

The course provides a clear roadmap to conceptualizing, writing, and publishing a memoir. I found the section on how to plan an outline particularly useful since it provided a variety of approaches to structuring the book. I want to start right away since the tools are so practical I definitely believe I'll make progress on my memoir.

Short and sweet sessions. Easy to move from one section to the other. The explanation of Word was very good. It was the first time for me using Word and to edit in Word. I learned a lot about how to publish a book on CreateSpace. As a third language English user I could follow and understand the clear descriptions. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
