Ableton Live 12 Mastery: The Complete Bundle (Parts 4–6) (Udemy.com)
Sound design, effects, mixing, mastering, and DJing — the second half of the Ableton Certified Trainer’s curriculum.
Created by: J. Anthony Allen
Last updated May 2026
What you will learn
- Design original sounds from scratch using Live's 12 instruments — including the Wavetable synth and the samplers
- Use Drum Racks and Instrument Racks to build modular, reusable sound design tools
- Apply Live's full effects library: time-based, frequency-based, and dynamic — and chain them like a pro
- Mix tracks that hold up at any volume — gain staging, EQ, compression, parallel processing, and stereo imaging
- Master your tracks inside Live for streaming services and distribution
- Use Live as a live-performance instrument with controllers, scenes, and follow actions
- DJ with Ableton Live — the workflow most courses leave out entirely
- Build the producer workflow that takes a sketch and turns it into a finished, polished release
Course Description
You can record in Live. You can make a beat. You can sketch out a track. Now what?
This is where Live stops being software and starts being an instrument.
I'm Jay — an Ableton Certified Trainer, a tenured university professor with a Ph.D. in Music, and the instructor for close to a million Ableton students on Udemy. This bundle is the back half of my Ultimate Ableton Live 12 series — the part where you stop sounding like someone learning a DAW and start sounding like a producer.
What this bundle actually is
Three full courses, packaged together — Parts 4, 5, and 6 of the Ultimate Ableton Live 12 series:
Part 4: Sound Design & Synthesis — every Ableton instrument, the Wavetable synth (yes, similar to Serum), the samplers, racks, and how to design a sound that doesn't exist anywhere else
Part 5: Producing with Effects — Live's full effects library: time-based, frequency-based, dynamic, and the chains that make a track sit right
Part 6: Mixing, Mastering, and DJing — get your tracks loud and clean, master them for distribution, and use Live as a performance and DJ instrument
If Parts 1–3 was about learning Live, this is about using Live.
What you'll actually walk away with
The ability to design original sounds from scratch instead of stacking presets
Real fluency with Live's 12 instruments — Wavetable, Operator, the samplers, Drum Rack, Instrument Rack, the works
Control over every effect category Live ships with, and the chains that make tracks polished and pro
Mixing skills that hold up: gain staging, EQ, compression, parallel processing, stereo imaging
Mastering inside Live for streaming distribution
The performance and DJ side of Live most courses skip entirely
Why this course, and not the other 400 Ableton tutorials
A few honest reasons:
It's complete. Most Ableton courses cover 20% of the program and stop. This bundle covers the half that actually makes you a producer.
I answer every question myself, usually within 24 hours. Not "support staff." Me.
Certified by IAOMEI (independent course quality review), Ableton Certified Trainer, and an average rating across my Ableton classes north of 4.7 stars from tens of thousands of students.
The vibe. It's just the two of us hanging out and learning Live. Bad jokes included. Please laugh — I'm pretending you do.
Who this is for
The producer who can already get a track started but can't make it sound finished. The hobbyist who's mixed by ear and is finally ready to learn what compression actually does. The Live user who's been ignoring the Wavetable synth because they don't know where to begin. The bedroom producer about to release a track and realizing mastering is its own thing. The DJ who picked Live because of the rumors and wants to actually use it that way.
You don't need to have taken Parts 1–3 first. But if you haven't and you're new to Live, start there.
See you in Lesson 1.
— Jay

Thank you very much. Another day, another slay. Alex.

I really value J.’s courses — the atmosphere is relaxed, but they provide a solid foundation for working in Ableton (I also highly recommend the music theory courses). What I appreciate most, though, is that none of my questions have ever gone unanswered, which is quite rare these days. Best regards, and I sincerely recommend it

The instructor takes his time to explain every little nook and cranny of the Ableton DAW. I'm hooked.

A very good course, clear and down-to-earth presentation and language, and strong content served in bite-sized chunks. My only issue was that the instrument demonstrations were often way louder than the speaking volume, painfully louder at times, so I kept having to constantly adjust the volume up and down. This was frustrating and detracted from the overall experience.

Excellent. Clear and precise explanations distributed across well thought out lessons.
By Bob Deily on 1/1/2026
Great, detailed content on each function in Ableton, but more importantly showing that content in the context of how it can actually be applied.
By Mike on 12/30/2025
Excellent presentation of all the things :) (I'm hooked, just enrolled in a couple additional courses that I probably didn't know I needed until now...)
By Bart Willockx on 12/18/2025
I m happy to find a teacher who chops up the lessonmaterial in small lessons. I ve done elsewhere movie lessons but they where long and it felt exausting. This is the perfect way of doing it.
By Marcus Bolda on 10/22/2025
Yes, J's brilliant exposition continues to adroitly unwrap the intricacies of Ableton Live 12 for me! Honestly, without this I'd still be lost so a huge shoutout here for J!
By Fernando Temblador on 7/23/2025
What I expected, info on everything Ableton, session view, midi tools. I'd say skip parts 1,2,3, and jump straight to 4,5,6.
