Course Description

Welcome to the COMPLETE Music Theory Guide!

This course is "5-Star Certified" by the International Association of Online Music Educators and Institutions (IAOMEI). This course has been independently reviewed by a panel of experts and has received a stellar 5-star rating.

This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take their music career (or music interest) and level up. Whether you are an active musician, an aspiring musician, or an aspiring music manager or agent - this class is perfect for you.

For years I've been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I'm making for Udemy use the same syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory - and cost shouldn't be a barrier.

My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understanding why chords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you've tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out - this series of courses is the perfect fit.

Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a "Mover and a Shaker," and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.

Throughout this class, If you get stuck, you can review the videos or post a question, and I'll back to it as fast as possible.

This class is a combined class and includes all parts 13, 14, and 15.

100% Answer Rate! Every single question posted to this class is answered within 24 hours by the instructor.

This Course helps me to understand where you should resolve the Mixture chords, Neapolitan Chords, and Augmented 6th chords. It also helps me to understand and recognize the forms and modulations.

By Anatoly Sawenko on 5/14/2024

Love Jason's courses, love his matter of fact nature. Despite his broad knowledge he makes it accessible for the online student. Really pleased on what I am learning in this course.

By Benjamin Ulfenborg on 4/23/2024

This series of courses in music theory is nothing short of excellent. The lecture material maintains its high quality and makes learning more advanced topics enjoyably.

By Lucas Maglio on 10/7/2022

All Music Theory Comprehensive Parts are very good. Jason has a great way of theaching that makes easy to follow and understand the concepts, even for foreigners like me.

By Marcus Catlett on 8/17/2022

Jason does a great job addressing complicated topics, building incrementally on earlier knowledge, providing relevant examples and only after establishing a baseline understanding exploring interesting nuances. I had never had any background in music before taking his classes, and in a few short months I've learned more than I ever imagined. I'm grateful for his clear and concise instruction!

By Luke Rivera on 8/4/2022

His course is well arranged and he explains things really well. As someone reviewing this information, it’s easy to navigate as well. I do wish I could watch this natively on my AppleTV however, instead of needing to mirror from my iPad, but that’s no fault of this course.

By Jean Claude Levesque on 5/23/2022

Really enjoy the course so far. Certainly more than I will ever need but it is so darn interesting. I am certain that I will never write a fugue but one should never say never. I am having withdrawal since number 21 is fast approaching. Thanks Jason.

By Charles Massingham on 1/24/2021

Amazing, i compose music so perhaps more details on Fugues and Inventions and more stylistic components of Baroque and Classical Music so i can make my own pieces in those styles, but very happy with the exposure J has given us to this period of music.

By Kate on 1/4/2021

I have taken all of Jason's music theory classes up to this point and each one impresses me more and more. You can tell, especially at this point, that you are getting a full college-level music theory curriculum and I cannot believe how much I have learned from these classes alone in the past couple of months. At this point, I feel as if I have a solid understanding of the music theory fundamentals and now I am learning some music theory extras that will help me along the way (chromatic chords, modal mixture, examining Fugues, and so forth), which reminds me that I'm getting closer to the end. Even though it feels like "extra stuff", don't skip this class, because all of it is beneficial and surely useful for anyone looking to compose anything. I'm very excited to be getting to the end of finishing up a college-level course and start putting my knowledge to use. Thanks Jason!

By Mark Helyar on 5/21/2020

That was pretty heavy! looking forward to diving into the next one. For a first time online learner I might be a bit inexperienced to comment, but I must say the relaxed approach and almost hypnotic depth of explanation of the material makes it very easy to remember and retain.
