Welcome to the COMPLETE Music Theory Guide!
This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take music theory (or music interest) and turn it into a usable skill. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.
For years I've been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I'm making for Udemy use the same syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory - and cost shouldn't be a barrier.
My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understanding why chords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you've tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out - this series of courses is the perfect fit.
Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a "Mover and a Shaker," and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.

This is an excellent continuation of Jason's classes on music theory. The lecture material and examples maintain very high quality, in particularly I found the sections on melody very interesting. The only thing I miss are worksheets where you apply the theory, as in the previous music theory classes.

I'm really enjoying this course! Jason explains the material really well, setting the context, providing examples and then building on layers of complexity once a decent foundation is in place. I like that he provides all of his examples to us as MuseScore files. He has been very responsive to questions we have, providing thoughtful and timely feedback.
By Sam Stiernhuvud on 4/25/2022
I have played actively the last 50+ years and learned many of these course things without knowing what they are called for and can be used to. Now many of these questions have got answers. Jason have an easy going positive style and I plan to continue until the bitter ;) end of his tutorials.

Just THE BEST complete online college level music theory, no like really... this is exactly the kind of curriculum taught in universities, only difference is you get bombarded with tests and exams in Uni, so it’s upto you to be a viable student.

I'm loving this course. I've just completed Level 9, grabbed a cup of tea and moved straight on to Level 10. It's complex stuff but it's all very clearly explained. I used to feel intimidated by music theory - not any more! My composition will be enriched by taking these classes. Love 'em.
By Rachel H on 6/27/2020
Another amazing course, because of the level it got into pretty complicated content, yet because of the clear, simple way Jason explained things it was highly understandable. I learned so much as usual, thanks Jason! I am going right on to parts 13, 14, 15!
By Annemieke Kanninga on 9/22/2019
I still enjoy learning more and the ease with which the teacher explains... thankyou!
By Chris Stewart on 6/24/2019
Hi Mr. Allen I've been taking these classes since part one, and I really appreciate how you go through the fundamentals. From learning what a Base Clef is to understanding how motives work in melodies, I really feel like I'm able to read and write music now.
By Harry Kamer on 10/2/2018
This is a refresher for me as a composition and performance degreed musician. Jason's courses are great fun to watch, and I always pick up additional views on how to interpret or describe musical concepts both for myself and others. This is the way music composition education should be taught; not the way I learned it back in college. I encourage everyone that has any interest to try his courses out. They are a real bargain and with a wealth of real world professional information.
By Gabriel McWethy on 8/9/2018
I have been with this course since part 1, and having just finished part 12, I can confidently say that if you want to learn Music Theory, even if you know absolutely nothing about it, this course is where you need to go. As someone who had an intermediate understanding of this vast topic, I am so pleased with these classes. Every topic is explained perfectly, the instructor is experienced and funny, and manages to make even the boring parts engaging. I highly recommend Music Theory Comprehensive as the place to go for anyone who wants to learn how music works. Thank you so much Jason!
