Amazon Web Services (AWS) - Zero to Hero (Udemy.com)

Beginners, Zero to Hero. AWS EC2 web server, NodeJS Server, AWS RDS database server, S3, SES & CloudWatch. FREE

Our take

Based on the ratings of 12,099 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, short introduction to AWS from BackSpace Academy, lifted straight from the opening section of their certification course. The syllabus shows 14 lectures and about 176 minutes, all in one section, covering an EC2 WordPress server, an RDS database, a NodeJS app on Elastic Beanstalk, S3 storage, SES email, CloudWatch alarms and the command line. It suits people who have never opened the AWS console and want to see what the main services do before committing money to a bigger course.

Reviewers like the clear explanations and the hands-on demos, and one mentions that the course shows how to clean up resources so learners don't get billed. The instructor's pronunciation and topic order get praise too. The complaints are consistent and fair. The videos were last updated in July 2019, and the AWS console has changed a lot since, so low-star reviews say it's hard to match what's on screen to what they see. One reviewer found the video resolution low. Another was annoyed that a free course still needs an AWS account that can incur charges, and there is no certificate at the end.

As a free taster it still earns its place next to the big certification courses in our AWS list. Treat it as a preview, not a course of record. If the 2019 console screens aren't a dealbreaker, it's a quick, low-risk way to find out whether AWS is something worth spending real hours on. Then move to one of the Solutions Architect or Cloud Practitioner courses beside it.

Best forComplete beginners who want to click through real AWS services for free before paying for a certification course.
Skip it ifYou want a certificate, current console screenshots, or exam prep. The videos date from 2019 and the AWS console has moved on since.

Pros

  • Free and under three hours, so it's a low-risk first look at EC2, RDS, S3, SES and CloudWatch
  • Hands-on demos reviewers call clear and easy to follow, with subtitles in 24 languages
  • Shows how to clean up resources afterwards to avoid AWS charges, which one reviewer singles out
  • Rated 4.5 by about 12,000 reviewers, with roughly 464,000 students enrolled

Cons

  • Last updated July 2019, so the AWS console in the videos no longer matches what learners see
  • No certificate, no quizzes, and a single section of 14 lectures, so little to practise on
  • One reviewer found the video resolution low, and an AWS account is still required
Great course for beginners. The explanations are clear, the hands-on demos are easy to follow, and I learned the fundamentals of AWS services like EC2, S3, RDS, and CloudWatch.

The UI has changed a lot in the website. It will be helpful if the course is updated to match it. It is very difficult to navigate to different parts of the website since its different when compared to the video.
