Course Description
Paul’s letter to the Galatians ranks among the earliest writings we have from the movement that became Christianity. It therefore brings into sharp focus key issues of theological debate within the early Jesus movement, including how people in this community saw themselves.
In this letter, Paul identifies a specific challenge to identity formation in the Messiah that is facing the church in Galatia. The particular question of whether Gentile converts needed to be circumcised, which is the direct impetus for Paul’s writing the letter, provides a basis from which Paul can expound a broader vision of membership in the Messiah community. Arguing against factions that would exclude Gentile converts failing to adopt Torah, Paul masterfully explores the logic of a New Age instantiated by Messiah Jesus, the new requirements for family belonging, and the reciprocal faithfulness of Jesus and believers which is the foundation of righteousness.
Across two courses (totaling 37 lectures), Prof. Wright walks students through Paul’s argument step by step, clarifying difficult translational matters, navigating the messy history of soteriology and interpretation since the Reformation. He then clears a path back to the original concerns of the time to help us see afresh what Paul considered the heart of the New Age.
Part Two, Ordering the Messiah Community, explores the implications of what it means that this new community of believers - marked by the reciprocal faith of, with, and in Jesus – is the single family of God promised on the Old Testament. In what ways does the Jesus movement fulfil the expectations and promises of the Old Testament? How are they to think of ethics and the Law if a New Age has indeed been launched? How does the life of the community result from the work of God’s spirit?
Prof. Wright continues his exploration of these questions, hinted at in Part One, to highlight Paul’s ultimate emphasis on the necessary unity of all believers in Messiah Jesus, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
This course covers thoroughly advanced material, first explored in Prof. Wright's Galatians commentary. We encourage students to proceed through this course at their own pace, and consult the resources provided, such as Greek lexicon and concept reflection prompts. Every effort has been made to clarify the dense theological argument Paul makes in Galatians and bring it into practical application for members of the Messiah community today.

I am teaching Galatians for our church bible study. Funny how you think you know a passage only to find out you really didn't know it at all. I love that we are trying to understand Paul's letters from the perspective of those in Paul's day, written from Paul's own understanding of his day. I am, in the process, trying to take this and see how to work it out I my own day.

Yes, this course has been a great match for me as a preacher and teacher of God's word. It's been wonderful to do some exegetical work and get back into the original context of Galatians to see what Paul was addressing in his time and how that applies to our time as well.

By putting the epistle in its historical context Prof. Wright makes it much more understandable than I’ve heard before. I like his respect for the listener in that he informs us of alternate readings and differing opinions while stating his case. He is to be commended for “rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The course has gotten much more difficult but I am learning so much! The layering of Dr Wright's explanations is fascinating and requires strict attention to follow.

I will be returning to this course (and to the part one course). Professor Wright has opened up Galatians to me in ways that clarify old confusions, strip away cultural baggage and help me see the 1st century context and meaning - all of which seem to bring a greater 21st century relevance to the letter.

Professor Wright once again opens up Scripture in rich and clear detail. He brings us into the practical and political realities of the first century churches, and into the language of that time. This helped me to follow Paul’s argument more closely, carrying me through what used to be difficult passages marred by the meanings and overtones given to key words by later churches fathers - particularly those of the Reformation. I cannot express my thanks enough. Praise and glory to God for such careful study and the gift of teaching which Prof Wright received and uses with such passion and diligence.

I thought that it would be vital to continue from course 1 to course 2. I have loved NT Wright's studies since first undertaking the original Galatians course. I deeply value to opportunity to glean from his wisdom and learning to the point where I have undertaken and completed the vast number of courses that NT Wright online have produced..

In Advanced Study of Galatians, Part 1, Professor Wright established an incredibly well-structured approach to Galatians – unlike any I had previously encountered. In Part 2, he builds and expands on that foundation in ways I didn’t anticipate even after completing Part 1. Don’t succumb to the temptation to call it good with Part 1 and skip over Part 2. Big mistake! Part 2 brings it all together in renewed light.

An Advanced Study in Galatians is a wonderfully challenging dive into early Christian theology. This in-depth study is thought-provoking, enlightening, and rewarding. I highly recommend this study to anyone who wants or maybe needs a fresh perspective on their understanding of scripture. This is a definite 5-star series that is worth your time, a genuine investment in your Christian journey. Thank you, Professor Wright and The Wisconsin Center for Christian Study for offering such a quality presentation.

In the second part of Prof Wright's outstanding discourse on Galatians, we are privileged to be taken not only into the mind of Paul and first century Galatians but also to see the development of thinking of one of the great Christian teachers of our age. In this there are many vital messages for the church and perhaps most importantly that we have lost the understanding that unity in the faith is vital for God's mission in the world.
