Apache Kafka and Spring Boot (Consumer, Producer) (Udemy.com)

In this course Apache Kafka and Spring Boot will be used to establish communication between them.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,172 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short code-along demo, not a Kafka class. It runs about 52 minutes across two video parts, plus three code articles, and builds a small Spring Boot app that produces to and consumes from a Kafka topic. The description is upfront that Spring and Kafka concepts are not explained, so it is meant for people who already know both. Arbi Elezi leads the walkthrough, and reviewers describe the teaching as practical and code-focused, though one finds the narration very slow.

Most of the 1,172 ratings are positive, with 928 giving four or five stars. Reviewers like that it is simple and gets a working producer and consumer running, and one person running Kafka on Docker said it worked perfectly. The complaints are consistent. Some say it skips partitions, offsets and the reasoning behind the code. Others hit setup trouble, since Windows installation is not shown. One reviewer also caught a wrong JsonSerializer import that IntelliJ suggests and the video never flags.

It was last updated in May 2019, so check library versions against what you use today. As a first integration it does the job, and with 24,393 students it has clearly found an audience. If you need theory, or anything beyond one producer and one consumer, pair it with a proper Kafka course. For a single look at the wiring, it is a fair use of an hour.

Best forSpring developers who already know Kafka basics and want one quick, working producer and consumer demo.
Skip it ifYou want partitions, offsets and other Kafka concepts explained, or help installing Kafka on Windows.

Pros

  • Short enough to finish in one sitting, about 52 minutes of video
  • Ends with a working Spring Boot producer and consumer, which reviewers say they got running
  • Code-first teaching with no theory padding, as the description promises
  • Reviewers say the demo also works with Kafka running on Docker

Cons

  • Skips partitions, offsets and other Kafka basics, so it feels thin to some
  • Windows install and config steps are not shown, so setup can stall
  • Last updated in 2019, and one reviewer found the narration very slow
Very helpful, the demo is great!! I just wanted to learn how to implement Kafka in SpringBoot, and your demo has just taught me about that! Thank you!

Labeled intermediate, and fair: it assumes you already know Spring Boot, Maven and Kafka basics.

Not bad. Although he's teaching at slow pace, but at least he gave me a starting point of using Apache Kafka to building real time applications. Thanks for clearing out my confusions.

It is an awesome video for beginner. If he can have a version for Window that will be better, but it is good enough to charge for this video already.

By Shiv Arur on 8/19/2019

This course is good if you wish to get your hands dirty with Kafka. However a basic knowledge of Kafka is important for this course. If you are beginner level learner, and want to quickly see and learn how to work with Kafka in Java, then this course is good.

Very good intro to integrating Spring Boot and Kafka. Your explanation of the benefits of using your own JSON serialization library was done well.

By Akinjide Agboola on 6/14/2019

The tutor is certainly very knowledgeable, It is a concise course so I wouldn't complain about more comprehensive explanation. The most important thing so far is that I have a good introduction to Kafka, so subsequent studies should be easier.

By Renato Jiquiriçá Ramos on 5/29/2019

For a free course they were very good information to initially know a little more about Kafka. I hope we have more free courses like this. Thanks !!!
