Azure SQL Server for Beginners part 1 of 2 (Udemy.com)

Azure SQL Databases

Created by: Raphael Asghar

Last updated December 2024

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,053 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

Raphael Asghar spent over 15 years as a production SQL Server DBA, and this course is aimed squarely at that job. It runs about 11 hours across 51 lectures and covers Azure SQL options, pricing tiers, firewall rules, migration from on-premises, and geo-replication for disaster recovery. The Beginner label is misleading. The listing says students should first take the author's T-SQL and three SQL administration courses, and it assumes you already know SQL Server admin. It is a bridge for DBAs, not a first database course.

Most reviewers like the teaching. They call it clear, easy to follow, and detailed enough to leave with a solid base. A couple used it alongside DP-300 exam study, and one said it was easier to follow than Microsoft's own reading material. The complaints are about age. The last update was December 2024, yet reviewers say portal layouts have changed, the DTU calculator link is dead, a retired installer is still used, and the PowerShell uses an older module. Others say the pace drags on installs and theory, and the course has no projects.

Of 1,053 ratings, 955 are four or five stars, so the teaching holds up even where the screens do not. One reviewer also felt uneasy about free tier charges after the author mentioned a big bill in a video, so watch spend closely. We would point working DBAs here if they can live with hunting for current commands. Anyone who needs lab steps that match the portal exactly should wait for a refresh.

Best forSQL Server DBAs who want to carry their on-premises skills to Azure, including migration, firewall rules and geo-replication.
Skip it ifYou are new to SQL, want labs and projects, or need steps that match today's Azure portal.

Pros

  • Unhurried, clear explanations that reviewers say make Azure SQL easy to follow
  • Covers pricing tiers, firewall rules, migration and geo-replication in about 11 hours
  • Taught by a SQL Server DBA with over 15 years in production roles
  • One reviewer found it easier to follow than Microsoft's own DP-300 online material

Cons

  • Portal screens, links and PowerShell modules are out of date, say many reviewers
  • Pace drags on installs and theory; one reviewer says five hours could cover it
  • No projects, quizzes or exercises, and prior SQL Server admin knowledge is assumed
Part 1 is a very through walk through of part of Azure's capabilities. It's all well explained and detailed enough for you to then go away and research further yourself with a good initial understanding of the topics.
Steve Linton, a student

Labeled beginner, but it assumes SQL Server administration knowledge from the author's earlier T-SQL and admin courses.

documentation not up to date. the author received an error ( I suspect because using a wrong PS module command, should be azureRM not simply az) and he didn't show how to resolve it, the doc is not correct. now the proper module is AZ not azureRM. azure itself changed significantly since the video was released. also web platform installer was retired and author wants us to install it

Very Nice Course on Azure SQL. He not only created the course, but he geniunely tried to impart the knowledge what he gained throughout his journey. He has given not 100% but 200%. A very detailed lecture on each and every aspect of Azure. I really appreciate and thanks from my bottom of heart to his effort for creating such a wonderful course on udemy. Swami from India.

Part 1 is a very through walk through of part of Azure's capabilities. It's all well explained and detailed enough for you to then go away and research further yourself with a good initial understanding of the topics. Much easier to follow than trying to use the microsoft online read-only course for the DP300 accreditation. Looking forward to Part2 ...

There were a few things that were confusing from one video to the next but just made it more challenging. Other than that I feel like i can confidently adminstrate SQL server in Azure.

Great course, just like every other course that Raphael produces. I am studying for the Microsoft DP-300 certification test, and although this course's purpose is not to prepare for this test, it has been greatly helpful for me.

I very much appreciated how Raphael spoke through each section, allowing us to see any error messages and hiccups that arose. Felt much more like sitting and being trained with a person, than just watching a video.

i ran into issues first with setting up my PowerShell to connect to azure, i was able to trouble shoot and get it working with some googling. also was not able to create a VM using the free plan on azure, i also was not able to get the elastic pools to work during that section. i still learned a lot from the class but i ended up spending a lot of time try to trouble shoot these things followed the steps but im guessing their terms of use has changed or something

where is the second part? Can you please publish it so that we can buy and go over it. Is there a section where you have sample interview questions or a site that you would recommend for interview questions and answers.

By Casmir Azih on 7/21/2021

As always, Mr. Asghar takes very complex subjects that have given me trouble for so long and makes it so simple and easy to understand. So far, I am very happy with the solid foundation so far just after watching the academic of Azure. I can't wait to dive into the practical aspect of it. Thanks again Mr. Asghar

Overall, this is a great course. The abundance of information is more than enough to get you started with Azure and its cloud concepts, environment and methods. He explains how to create an Azure account (etc) and follow along to get real 'hands-on' experience. His style is informal - much like a co-worker leaning over your shoulder on your first day with Azure. I'm a little more used to very concise information in which I have to pause the video in order to digest the information and keep up. His delievery is more relaxed (not overwhelmingly concise) so I found I could keep the videos playing throughout the course. He is a bit overly redundant occassionally, repeating important info more than a few times, but nonetheless I am coming away feeling that I thouroughly understand the basics. I'm an experienced DBA, but new to the cloud, and even the basics offer plenty to digest for now. Great class!
