What you will learn
- Use GraphQL to communicate between back-end and front-end, including authentication.
Course Description
Content updated in 2022 to reflect latest versions of Ruby, Rails and GraphQL!
This course teaches the basics of using GraphQL in a Rails application. GraphQL is a query language invented by Facebook in 2012, and made open source in 2015. While it has certain clear advantages over REST, it also has a somewhat steeper learning curve.
Structured in a simple and accessible manner, these lectures will help you get on your way to using GraphQL to circulate data between back-end and front-end applications.
In the first section we will learn about reading data. The second section will be focused on changing data, and the slightly more advanced third section is about protecting data, using techniques both implemented in the GraphQL library or suggested by myself.
GraphQL has a number of features that make it an advantageous change for REST adopters, like the ability to only get what you ask for, or having instant API documentation available after every change. After completing this course, you'll be in a position to implement GraphQL in a new or existing Rails application with basic features all the way up to authorisation and access control. This should definitely get you started on your way!

I started web development since the early days of the web, and since then have worked for several companies, large and small. After co-owning a dev firm, I worked as a Software Architect for a large Swedish company.
In addition to programming, I'm passionate about foreign languages. I'm a book author, I play guitar and I fly helicopters.
I'm 46 years old and I'm Romanian, but I live in Sweden.

I enjoy the concise and to-the-point explanations of GraphQL while at the time I feel that I'm not missing out on vital information. I understand that there are much more high level concepts that could've been thrown into the course, I appreciate that no time is wasted on those concepts and I can explore them in my own time. Taking the course I feel that I am learning at a very quick pace while retaining the information learned.

Great beginner course - perfect for learning the basics in setting up a GraphQL Api. Would be useful to have a second/extra course that includes creating a frontend that speaks to this backend, but that is beyond the scope of this course.

This basic course is exactly what I need. It is succinct but detailed enough to understand the inner workings of GraphQL in the context of Rails. I'm a Rails noob, but I still got plenty of good information from Alex's course. Highly recommended.

At this moment, first, you should zoom in the window, I'm getting a lot errors because I can't see the things you wrote. Second, I would say that is better to uninstall the pluggins for your code editor. I was getting errors because I was using [] in the author_type.rb and I noticed that you didn't write that. Ant third, You should go for every configuration that graphql made. I was getting problems in the routes and I couldn't see what was your project configuration. Overall, I learn the basics and I'm happy with that.

I really liked how simple the course is. Really made for the beginners who want to understand it from scratch and basics. I learned a lot, looking forward to seeing more tutorials in GraphQL with ruby that you suggested in Conclusion on advanced topics.

Great foundations. Only friction: for some commands the author entered, he fast-forwarded through entering it and moved on as soon as the command was done, so it was difficult to see the command I needed to type. Also, after the first mutation when the author changed the inline method to a mutation class, the code in future lectures sometimes used either of the forms of that mutation, which was a bit confusing.

It is quick, to-the-point and quite comprehensive. Pretty much the only course covering this for Rails at the moment of this review. I have lots of takeaways and I would recommend it to others. It has a few parts that could use an update but the teacher promptly responded any questions on them.

It stopped just as it got interesting. I do not like how the video would fast-forward when he was typing, I would rather it go slower to make it easier to follow along. I had to keep pausing the video. Also, it would be better if the exercises built on top of the example app in the lectures instead of being totally separate.

Great course, short, sweet to the point. I learned so much, I am able to create graphQL with Ruby now and it makes me so happy. Alex did an amazing teaching job. I have watched this course a few times and learned different thing each time Thank you for putting in the effort to create this course. I am really looking forward to your future videos, please let me know when you have new courses.

The instructor was very clear and super responsive to my many questions. I would loved to have seen this properly tested, and front end request to this api. My one con was the resolution is not clear, and when copying examples I often made mistakes and it took a while to catch on. It either is the resolution or the coloring of the editor. Otherwise thanks soooo much, I really enjoyed!
