In this Ruby training course, Infinite Skills teaches you the fundamentals of the Ruby programming language. Ruby was designed to be more powerful that Perl, and more object-oriented than Python, and has gained in popularity due to its power and ease of use. Mike will show you the basic functions and features of Ruby, and how to put them together to create powerful programs.

You will start with lessons for installing Ruby on either your Mac or PC, and how to run simple programs. This Ruby training video is designed for the absolute beginner, and no prior programming experience is necessary. Some of the topics the course covers in this video training are; working with data and variables, operators and expressions, decision making (if and case statements), loops, methods and functions and object-oriented programming. You will also learn about exception handling, reading and writing files, and working with the Ruby debugger.

From this starting point, you can move on to work with Ruby on Rails, or continue to hand-code your Ruby programs, but either way you will have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of the Ruby programming language. It says that you do not need prior experience. However some of the things the course asks you to do seem to assume that you know how to do certain things already. Also, as the instructor is using a Windows machine, it is more difficult to relate to using a Mac, which I have.

Not knowing anything about programming, this course is difficult for me to follow because it assumes I know something already about programming in general. I'm at the halfway point and feel like I'll have to go back through the course several times to understand and remember the lessons. Also, I think it could be improved by some small assignments along the way and quizzes to allow me to check my understanding.

Very happy with the experience overall. The person was easy to understand for a change. The code examples worked right off the bat. I hate unprofessional courses where code being presented is supposed to work; however, the person did not pay attention to detail and it constantly has little errors. This excludes debugging examples where the code is broken on purpose.

I really enjoyed the Ruby course. It was easy enough for me to progress with relative speed but hard enough that I had to repeat and sometimes look on line for solutions (Command prompt - commands & Ruby Tk connection).
Additional exercises would solidify learning & projects would progress competence. Thats what I am looking for now.

So far I am still very early in the course, but as a total beginner I have found that there is still an assumption of knowledge required or prior preparation to do this course. However, despite that I am able to follow the instructors directions albeit at a much slower pace than the tutorial.
