Course Description

Classroom management is consistently identified as a major concern for teachers. Yet, it is absolutely an essential component of effective teaching. This course helps teachers learn how to effectively manage a classroom.  The primary goal of the course is to introduce a practical model for understanding and deconstructing the tasks involved in the process of classroom management and on learning practical, easy to implement strategies that enable teachers to spend more time teaching rather than disciplining!

Specifically, participants in this course will learn:

  • Common misconceptions about classroom management
  • How to develop effective rules and routines
  • The role relationships play in one’s classroom management plan
  • Techniques for preventing misbehavior
  • Strategies for dealing with minor and more serious misbehavior
  • Plus much, much more!

The course is divided into seven chapters.  Each chapter begins with a lecture presented by Dr. Tracey Garrett, a specialist in the field of classroom management.  Then, each chapter has a self-guided component where participants can review and expand on the material presented in the first lecture at their own pace.  Finally, the remaining lectures in each chapter are interviews of teachers at different grade levels offering insight into their practice.

I thought this course was excellent. The content was delivered in an organized and easy to follow format. The lectures were short, easy to digest, and understand. I liked how there were clips from teachers explaining how they effectively manage their classroom and put into practice each step of the classroom management process.

The information is very clear, the quality of the recordings could be better, in some videos the sound is very muffled or there's a lot of background noice. I'd also like to see a quiz at the end of each section to enforce the material that has just been discussed and then a big quiz at the end of the course to check if you still remember everything etc. I believe that would be a great addition to this already good course!

I received basic knowledge about classroom management. I would have liked to have examples of real world situations instead of the teachers talking, for example showing scenes occurring in a classroom and then asking questions about how to act in different situations.

Lot of ideas comes out after viewing this course that might help me attaining classroom management. Behavioral concern is the main problem and how to deal with it. Teachers involved in this course helps me a lot to understand and visualize some ideas that I may use some of these days. Thanks for this wonderful course Classroom Management Essentials.

I liked the style of presentation with the ideas set forth and then having the teachers comment on how they would address the content. I think that this course if fine as is. Classroom management is a very important area. It would be nice if there was a beyond essentials course. I always like to see more and new material.

I liked the fact that they utilized real teachers discussing their different ways of classroom management techniques and strategies in terms of rules, routines, engaging lessons, and consequences in dealing with various kinds of misbehavior.

Course is almost entirely focused on American schools, elementary level. It was of almost no relevance or help to me based in UK Secondary school. She also drones on a lot and asks a lot of rhetorical questions needlessly like a weird work scrutiny/observation, justifying her need to talk on. Not one I will repeat. On positive side if you are USA based and in a middle or lower school it is a massive course, took nearly a whole day to get through and will probably be of help to you.

The format was user friendly and very well structured. Classroom management is overlooked so often, especially in the schools I have worked in while living in Peru. I plan on recommending this course to the administration at my current school. I think it could be very helpful.
