Course Description

Cryptography is a foundation in cybersecurity. It is the underlying building block of many defense mechanisms, systems, and protocols.  Without crypto, we will not be able to safely conduct many things on the Internet, such as web browsing, online banking, working remotely, etc. Without crypto, blockchain and cryptocurrency will not exist.

In this course, we systematically study the basic principles of cryptography.  In particular, we focus on the three essential pillars of cryptography, including secret-key encryption, one-way hash function, and public-key cryptography. We study how they work and how they are used in the real-world applications. We also look at the risks they face, and how these risks are mitigated in the real world. Furthermore, we study the common mistakes people make when using crypto algorithms and protocols. We show how these mistakes can be exploited in attacks.

The course emphasizes hands-on learning. For each topic covered, students not only learn the theory, they also get to work on the hands-on exercises developed by the instructor. These exercises are called SEED labs, and they are being used by over 1000 institutes worldwide. The course is based on the widely-adopted textbook written by the instructor. The title of the book is "Computer & Internet Security: A Hands-on Approach".

Wenliang Du

Dr. Wenliang (Kevin) Du, ACM Fellow and IEEE Fellow, is the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence at Syracuse University. He got his PhD degree from Purdue University. He is currently a full professor (tenure track), teaching computer security for over 20 years. He promotes experiential learning in cybersecurity education. To provide students with hands-on experiences, funded by multiple grants from the National Science Foundation and over a period of 20 years, he has developed over 40 labs (called SEED labs). These labs are now being used by over 1100 universities, colleges, and high schools in 80 countries. He wrote a popular textbook on cybersecurity, which has been adopted by over 280 schools worldwide.

In 2010, his SEED project was highlighted by the National Science Foundation in a report sent to the Congress. The report highlights "17 projects that represent cutting-edge creativity in undergraduate STEM classes nationwide". Due to the impact of the SEED labs, he received the "2017 Academic Leadership" award from the 21st Colloquium for Information System Security Education. In 2019, Syracuse University bestowed upon him the  Meredith Professorship, the university's most prestigious honor for teaching excellence.

I love how this course is full of videos that get you started in cryptography and has a website full of practice labs with books that all correspond. This is a complete and fully supported great beginner learning path for anyone wanting to learn cryptography under the hood!

I personally find these technologies very useful and powerful. Secret-key encryption, hashing, and public-key systems make our digital world safer. I think blockchain and cryptocurrency show how cryptography can build trust without needing middlemen. Overall, I believe these are good innovations that make online communication and transactions more secure and transparent.

Really good course - gave me exactly what I needed by explaining all the things I've been using for years without really understanding them, I'm in a better place now to understand crypto than I was before this course.

Amazing course, so many things/smart words which I have seen/heard before but never understood, now finally it starts to paint a picture. Thanks a lot for these course and all other educational materials.

Understanding the last two chapters was challenging for me due to my limited knowledge of Bitcoin and Blockchain. Additionally, Section 6 (TLS) proved to be a bit difficult. However, the professor did an excellent job explaining these concepts, and I can always revisit the course materials for further clarification. Enrolling in this class has been rewarding overall, and I'm excited about the prospect of taking the Blockchain course in the future.

Especially the Section 7 about Bitcoin and Blockchain was really interesting for me. Professor Wenliang Du is clearly a master in his domain, I had some problems with understanding him sometimes sadly and the subtitles are not accurate (which would have made the language issue not a problem). Thanks a lot for the amazing knowledge!

This course is interesting, informative and provocative. It provides me an alternative perspective that is definitely worth exploring. The instructor is highly intelligent demystify obscure technology.

By Nick Brubaker on 1/28/2023

Really frustrating explanations, that miss important gaps. For example in Section 2, lectures 6 and 7, explaining concepts based on the complete plaint text and cipher text while pointing to individual blocks in the same diagram suggesting we matter is on a block level.

By Martin Balash on 1/14/2023

I've been studying modern cryptography on my own for the last year or two and this course has presented a lot of information that I have missed out on. If you have been studying modern cryptography on your own and would like to engage with a course that can help you consolidate your understanding, this course is for you.

By Tobias Oliver Jensen on 11/1/2022

The course was very informative and the instructors examples and deep dives with live-drawings helped explain a lot of concepts clearly. I can highly recommend this course both beginners and people who have already been looking into cryptography.
