Course Description
The course presented here is the exact General Chemistry I course that I taught as a university professor in a Chemistry Department that was certified by the American Chemical Society, the professional organization for chemists. All topics that are essential to any General Chemistry I course are covered here in detail. My teaching style for this Udemy course is exactly how I taught in the lecture halls. Each topic is explained in detail, terms are defined and then examples are done to show how the theory is applied in practice.
As was the case when I was teaching at the university, students have access to ample supplemental material, all of which will be in the Resource Folders. In addition to the 30+ hours of lectures, I have included a downloadable audio mp3 file of each lecture. For all but three lectures, I’ve included a Practice Assignment where you can test your understanding of the material. Also included is a detailed answer key for each Practice Assignment. A total of nearly 100 examples are worked out in the lectures and for each section (except section 8), I have included a list of the problems that you can download and follow along. For learning nomenclature; i. e., the systematic naming of elements, ions and chemical compounds, I have included flash card videos that you can download to drill yourself. I’ve also included a number of memory aids (mnemonics) to help you remember the symbols for the commonly used elements and important concepts in chemistry. Any graphs, figures or tables presented in the lectures are also available as downloadable files.
This course assumes that you have no prior knowledge or experience with chemistry. In fact, this course is ideal for anyone who needs to take General Chemistry at the college level but did not have it in high school. This course is also well-suited for those who need to refresh their knowledge of General Chemistry before taking it at the college level.
Since chemistry is a quantitative science, a working knowledge of high school algebra is needed. If your math skills are weak, this course will show you what types of math calculations are needed and you can hone those skills prior to your taking the course.
For this Udemy course, I used the Openstax Chemistry textbook which can be downloaded free of charge in pdf format at their website. A downloadable copy is also available in the Resources Folder for Lecture 1. However, if you already have an old textbook, that may also work for you. Topics may be presented in somewhat different order, however.

Good course, but man this guy pretty boring to listen to.

Very impressed so far. I did chemistry to second year in the 90s but have forgotten it all and am using this course and Dr Kowalczyk's other courses to help me regain some skills in it. He speaks clearly, with a solid knowledge of the subject and a great desire to ensure students master it.

I wish I could leave a higher rating! As someone coming back into Chemistry after decades, I could not have asked for a better teacher. From the very beginning, everything is explained in a super simple, super clear manner but without sacrificing depth so that even as a complete beginner I barely felt left behind. And I must also say as much as I enjoyed every lecture, I enjoyed the bad Chemistry jokes even more! (no regrets)

Its a great course for chemistry and sections are perfectly divided so you can master one and move on to next. Dr k' course cover the college chemistry , organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry. I love the course it helps me to solve problems and questions based on chemistry and Main point I recommend this course If You listen and master each section of course you will never forget it and you can teach others as well .Thanks Dr. k. Well, I didn't have a panic attack after the first lecture. It's been 16 years since I took a science class, and at 52, I'm thinking of getting a nursing degree. Chemistry and microbiology are two of the most difficult prerequisites, so I im taking this class to test myself to see if I have what it takes to move forward.

there is a reason this course is highly rated and a best seller. Just finished the first section and all the other reviews are correct. hand writing, just like mine, but explains so well you don't even notice. Great pace clearly loves chemistry because his dad humor and memorization help is second to none. also his teaching is perfect to watch/ take notes and rewatch at 2x later.

I'm actually only halfway through this course, but I wanted to give a review already as I am so incredibly pleased with how good this course is, and how much I have already learnt. Dr. K is very thorough, and detailed with all his explanations. He adds jokes here and there and little mnemonics which truly aid in learning and there are so many examples to work through to ensure that you really understand each concept. Really amazing. Thank you so much Dr. K!

One soon recognizes, after a few lectures, that for Dr. K., teaching is a labor of love. Dr. K. ranks in the top 10% of my university professors for two reasons. The first is his knowledge and competence. He gives formal definitions for terms, highlights critical concepts, and explains how equations are derived. He presents essential concepts with sufficient clarity, and the means for students to practice those applications via problem sets, so that when one studies the text, which, by definition, has a broader and deeper scope, the student is equipped and has a fighting chance to follow the arguments. There are many teachers with knowledge and competence but that is not a guarantee of superior teaching. Dr. K’s second quality is his empathy for students. He places himself in his students’ shoes, anticipating their problems, and explains all steps in a slow a patient manner. Just as in conversing with one learning a foreign language, one should speak slowly, for it is not about what you know, but about what you can impart to the beginner successfully, so does Dr. K. slow the pace for the benefit of his students. I will take the second semester and I will alternate it with his organic chemistry class.

I convinced myself I hated chemistry because I didn't understand it in school. This course has helped me tremendously and has done an excellent job of teaching the core basics of the subject. I'm going to major in biochemistry this upcoming fall! This course is heaven sent!!!!!

This course is exactly what I want, and more. The course is exceptionally well and patiently explained by Dr K for the student who is not necessarily from a science background (like me). Dr K certainly knows how to lecture students, I am sure that students at his University must have ranked him no. 1. We are extremely fortunate that Dr K took the (considerable) time to prepare and present First and Second Semester Chemistry - what a legacy. I like the humorous references to "Molar Highway" and "Diatomic Urea". I did not realize Chemistry was so amusing. The example solutions are clearly set out, no shortcuts allowed. Also, I like that Dr K's course is linked to the Openstax textbook.
