Learn the essentials of Excel in only 2 hours

Our take

Based on the ratings of 38,059 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short tour of Excel taught by Kevin Stratvert, who spent 14 years at Microsoft and led the Office app team. It runs about 2 hours across 60 short lectures. The syllabus moves from the interface and data entry through formulas like SUM, VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP, then charts, sorting, filtering, one pivot table lesson, sharing and printing. The label says beginner, but the reviews suggest it fits people who have touched Excel before better than people who have never opened it.

Most of the 38,059 ratings are positive, with about 21,500 five-star and 13,400 four-star. Reviewers call the explanations clear and not repetitive, and several say they picked up tips they will use at work every day. One says his style kept them engaged. The complaints cluster around speed. Three low reviews say he moves too fast, two of them from beginners, and one says the tasks covered things they never needed. Another reviewer asks for the spreadsheet shown on screen so they can follow along hands-on.

The syllabus is thin in places. Pivot tables get a single 13 minute lecture, and charts get two lectures totaling 8 minutes, so treat those as an introduction. There are no quizzes or exercises. It was last updated in January 2024, so newer Excel features may be missing. It works as a fast refresher for people who need working knowledge this afternoon. If you are starting from zero or want to practice, pick a slower beginner course instead.

Best forOffice workers who already poke around Excel and want a quick, tidy tour of formulas, charts and pivot tables.
Skip it ifYou are a true first-timer who needs a slow pace and practice files, or you want deep pivot table and formula training.

Pros

  • Explanations are clear and not repetitive, per reviewers who already use Excel at work
  • Short: 60 lectures in about 2 hours, easy to finish in a sitting or two
  • Covers XLOOKUP alongside VLOOKUP, plus flash fill, sharing and printing
  • Instructor spent 14 years at Microsoft and keeps viewers engaged, reviewers say

Cons

  • Too fast for true beginners, according to the 1 to 3 star reviews
  • Pivot tables get one 13 minute lecture and charts only two, so depth is limited
  • No quizzes or exercises, and one reviewer wanted the on-screen spreadsheet to follow along
I thought it was very informative and Kevin's style was perfect for keeping me engaged.
Colette Warde, a student

Listed as beginner, but reviewers say it suits light Excel users best. True first-timers found the pace too quick.

Course Description

You’ll learn the essentials of Excel in just 2 hours.

Having worked at Microsoft and on Excel, we focus on the core functionality that most people use to make you productive as quickly as possible vs. digging into every single feature available. This way, you’ll have a strong foundation to start getting insights from your data.

Build a strong foundation

We start with the absolute basics. When you first open Excel, it may appear somewhat intimidating with so many different buttons and controls. It may even feel like the cockpit of a jet plane. To demystify Excel, we begin by walking through the interface and covering how you can easily get back to the controls that you use most often.

Next, we delve into how you can enter data efficiently and format it so that it looks good. We then save the workbook in a way that lets us collaborate with others in real time and gives us access to something called version history so you can easily jump back to earlier versions.

Formulas and functions made easy

Once we save our workbook, you’ll learn all about formulas and functions to help you answer those critical business questions. Here too we cover the basics, like how to use the status bar for simple metrics, how to enter a formula by referencing cells, and how to reference cells relatively, absolutely, or with naming.

From there, we move on to some of the most used Excel functions, like SUM, MAX, MIN, COUNT, AVERAGE, VLOOKUP, and XLOOKUP. You’ll understand how functions work and how to make sense of other functions not covered in this course, as there are over 500 functions in Excel.

Visualize your data with charts

We then launch into how to visualize your data using charts and conditional formatting. Charts make it easy to see trends and anomalies in your data that you might otherwise miss by just looking at your data.

Explore your data with sorting, filtering, and pivot tables

Sorting and filtering come next, which lets you manipulate how to view your data. You’ll also discover how pivot tables work and how you can analyze data simply by dragging and dropping fields. With the magic of pivot tables, you don’t even need to enter in formulas or functions to quickly summarize your data.

Focus on just what matters

Throughout this course, you’ll learn quick shortcuts to make you more efficient, like how you can flash fill to separate or merge columns, how to split panes to view far away rows at the same time, and even how to print just what you need.

By the end of this course, you'll gain a strong foundation in Excel & you’ll be well on your way to understanding the story behind your data. Join me, your host, to master the essentials of Excel.

I've been using Excel for years and some of the things Kevin is introducing are new to me too! It's amazing how much functionality lives in there that we just don't know about until we take this course :)

By Shannon Chacon on 7/23/2026

This was an excellent hands on training. I enjoyed being able to apply all the techniques as we worked through each lesson. I have been an Excel user for years and often times they give you so much training you miss some of the basics. This is a perfect first time training as well as an excellent refresher for anyone.

This is hilly importante course for all members in an organization and should be resourceful and an easy way to turn activities much faster. would suggest the same in a Portuguese version.

By Barbara Kimathi on 6/29/2026

The lessons are good so far and im really getting a lot of knowledge on excel and increasing my skills. It is indeed Amazing , Above expectations! I became more perfect on entering formulas and all math calculations in Excel.

By Naomi Ayala on 6/29/2026

This class is very informative, and I learned a lot, even though I've been using Excel for years. My one qualm is that I have a Mac, so my Excel looks somewhat different. It was hard to keep up in some parts because I was looking for something that, for me, looked different from the standard PC-formatted Excel.

By Syed Nizamuddin Sultan on 6/27/2026

We left this rating because the courses were informative, well-structured, and relevant to our work. A few areas, such as adding more real-life scenarios and hands-on exercises, could further improve the learning experience.

By Charan Machkuri on 6/3/2026

An incredibly clear, fast-paced course that demystifies Excel in just 2 hours. Kevin breaks down essential formulas, charts, and pivot tables perfectly for beginners—highly recommended!

By Antonella Manzoni on 5/21/2026

By Raichelle Bueckert on 5/7/2026

Very informative with strong content. However, the instructor spoke quite quickly, and I found myself needing to pause or rewind several times in order to properly follow the instructions and fully understand how to complete the tasks being demonstrated.

By Christina Oliva on 2/6/2026

Great course! I have been using Excel for years but never took a course. I have learned so much from this course and look forward to using all of my new skills. Thanks Kevin!
