Course Description

Ready to take your accounting to the next level?

You already understand the foundation. You know how transactions become financial statements. You understand debits and credits, the accounting cycle, inventory, assets, liabilities, and equity.

Now you are ready to do more with it.

Financial Accounting & Bookkeeping: Next Level picks up where Financial Accounting & Bookkeeping: from beginner to pro leaves off. It takes the same clear, practical approach and expands it into deeper financial analysis, cash-flow preparation, revenue recognition, receivables, inventory, time value of money, long-term assets, bonds, equity, and investments.

This is not about making accounting harder just because the topics go further. It is about taking a foundation you already understand and using it to see more, analyze more, and make better decisions.

You built the foundation. Now level it up.

A proven course family with an extraordinary history

This course continues the same acclaimed accounting program and teaching approach that learners already know from the financial-accounting foundation.

  • Created at the #1 accounting university in the USA.

  • Trusted by more than 100,000 learners on Udemy and at schools around the world.

  • Highlighted in The New York Times, Wired, and Gigaom.

  • Recommended by Harvard to incoming MBA students who had not studied accounting.

Clayton Christensen, the late Harvard Business School professor and author of The Innovator's Dilemma, called Norm's teaching “extraordinary.”

Quick glance

  • Level up your financial analysis: Move beyond the basics into liquidity, operating-cycle, leverage, return, shareholder, and valuation measures.

  • Build full cash-flow skills: Prepare and interpret the statement of cash flows using direct and indirect methods.

  • Go deeper into operating accounting: Revenue recognition, receivables, inventory systems, foreign currency, taxes, contingencies, and warranties.

  • Use the time value of money: Present value, future value, annuities, and uneven cash flows.

  • Take financing and ownership further: Bonds, stock, dividends, treasury stock, retained earnings, and equity.

  • Understand investments: Equity and debt securities, the equity method, and consolidated financial statements.

  • Keep the same clear teaching style: The concepts go further, but Norm still teaches the purpose first and the mechanics second.

The natural next step after your financial-accounting foundation

If you completed Financial Accounting & Bookkeeping: from beginner to pro, you have already done the hard part. You built the system from the ground up and learned how accounting information is created.

This course takes that knowledge further.

Instead of starting over, you expand what you already know. Familiar ideas become more useful as you add deeper analysis, more complex transactions, additional financing choices, and new ways to evaluate a company's financial story.

An equivalent introductory financial-accounting course can also prepare you. The important thing is that you already understand the core system and are ready to level it up.

Level up the way you read financial statements

Basic analysis tells you where to start. Next-level analysis helps you see how the pieces work together.

You will learn how the operating cycle, financing choices, asset management, leverage, return on assets, return on equity, dividends, market capitalization, book value, and financial trends interact.

The analysis section includes:

  • working capital, current ratio, and quick ratio.

  • receivables, inventory, and accounts-payable turnover.

  • the operating cycle and financing operations.

  • debt ratios, debt-to-equity, and times interest earned.

  • return on assets, return on equity, and the DuPont framework.

  • EPS, dividends, payout, yield, and shareholder return.

  • P/E, market capitalization, book value, vertical analysis, and horizontal analysis.

The goal is not simply to calculate more ratios. It is to understand what the pattern says about liquidity, operations, risk, profitability, and value.

Build stronger cash-flow and operating-accounting skills

You will prepare the statement of cash flows using both direct and indirect methods and complete a bank reconciliation.

You will also take revenue and receivables further with:

  • shipping terms, consignment, long-term contracts, and guarantees.

  • sales discounts, returns, and allowances.

  • bad-debt estimation using receivables and net-credit-sales methods.

  • trade notes, factoring, and discounting receivables.

  • sales denominated in a foreign currency.

Inventory expands beyond the introductory foundation into perpetual and periodic systems, specific identification, FIFO, LIFO, moving weighted average, inventory estimation, inventory errors, and lower-of-cost-or-market valuation.

Add the time value of money

Money received today is not economically identical to money received years from now.

You will learn present value and future value for single cash flows, annuities, and uneven cash-flow streams. These tools support later work with bonds, leases, financing, and valuation.

A financial calculator or equivalent calculator is helpful for this part of the course.

Take assets, bonds, equity, and investments further

Your financial-accounting foundation introduced assets, liabilities, and equity. Now you go deeper.

You will study long-term assets including basket purchases, self-constructed assets, leases, accelerated depreciation, repairs, improvements, disposals, intangibles, goodwill, natural resources, valuation, and impairment.

You will then level up into:

  • Bonds: Issue price, face value, premiums, discounts, straight-line amortization, effective-interest amortization, and early retirement.

  • Equity: Common and preferred stock, cash and stock dividends, stock splits, treasury stock, retained earnings, prior-period adjustments, and owners' equity.

Instructor Details

Norm Nemrow

Professor Norm Nemrow is a self-made multimillionaire, philanthropist, and instructor honored by the President of the United States. He's been highlighted in the New York Times and Wired. But to nearly everyone, he is simply Norm.

At the beginning of each semester, he would tell his students that although he did not have a PhD, he did have a master’s degree in accounting, so “Master Nemrow” was also acceptable. Plenty of students took him up on the joke, and to this day he answers to both.

In 1979, after earning his Master of Accountancy from BYU, Norm began his career with Arthur Andersen & Company in Orange County, California, practicing as a CPA for three years before leaving to join a start-up real estate investment company. As its Chief Financial Officer and later its President, he helped manage its nationwide growth to more than 11,000 apartment units before negotiating the sale of the business in 1985 for nearly a third of a billion dollars. He retired at the age of 30. During those years he also taught as an Associate Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Management.

So far the content has been completely covered in the previous course.

By Jim Offutt on 12/5/2023

This was very tough for me. These later sections of the 5 lesson course has really accelerated in difficulty. It is taking a commitment to grasp these concepts, which is a plus for this course as you can get more out of it.

By Randy Zeroth on 5/14/2021

I am taking this course to prepare for a BS in Accounting. I am also planning on taking my CPA Exam after graduation. This is a great series, I recommend all 5. It will help you learn or review. I already hold an AS in Accounting and these courses have helped me solidify my understanding of accounting concepts.

By Renato Barroc on 9/10/2020

The classes are really well structured and the content is packed with different concepts, some parts are harder than others of course, but I have never seen a course so well organized with examples and practices for the students. Well done guys.

By Jan Szyszko on 8/1/2020

By Ryan Sin on 6/5/2020

I have to acknowledge in many respects that this course is good. In more ways than I can admit I'm sure it will benefit me for myself for reasons of wanting to know more about accounting in general. Hopefully it could lead to better career and professional opportunities in the future.
