Course Description
Every product leaves a footprint. Life Cycle Assessment is how you measure it, understand it and do something about it.
Sustainability is no longer a peripheral concern for product teams — it's a core design requirement. Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA, is the internationally standardised methodology that allows organisations to systematically analyse the environmental burden accumulated across a product's entire life cycle, from raw material extraction through to end of life, with the explicit goal of driving meaningful improvement. If you work anywhere near product development, manufacturing or sustainable design, LCA is a discipline you need to understand.
What makes this course distinctive is its approach. Rather than working through the LCA framework as a dry sequence of definitions, all the fundamental concepts are taught through a carefully constructed visual knowledge model — a structured, downloadable asset that maps the key concepts of LCA and their relationships in a way that makes the subject genuinely intuitive to grasp and easy to revisit. It's a learning tool you'll keep coming back to long after the course is done.
The curriculum takes you through the complete LCA methodology in a logical sequence: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and life cycle interpretation. The course also covers approaches that actively promote improved environmental performance — including eco-design — giving you not just an understanding of how to assess impact, but a sense of how to act on those findings.
What you will be able to do after this course:
Explain the principles, phases and framework of Life Cycle Assessment with confidence
Navigate and apply the LCA methodology — from goal and scope definition through to life cycle interpretation
Use the downloadable visual knowledge model as an ongoing reference for LCA concepts and their relationships
Articulate the environmental benefits of LCA and connect them to product improvement programmes
Recognise opportunities for applying eco-design principles within product development contexts
Who this course is for:
This course is designed for a broad audience united by a common interest in sustainability and responsible product development. It will suit aspiring and practising product engineers, manufacturing engineers and industrial designers, as well as professionals in product-oriented functions such as supply chain, buying and merchandising. Project managers, programme managers and change champions looking to build their LCA literacy will find it equally accessible. No prior knowledge of LCA is required, and no deep technical background is assumed — if you care about sustainability and want to understand one of its most important analytical tools properly, this course was built for you.

Kettle analysis example has superficial data. How is 3,45L divided into around 5 cups of 0,25L? Even considering these 5 cups are boiled 3 times a day, 5 * 0,25 = 1,25 * 3 = 3,75 and this does not equal 3,45... Further down the road it's even more wild with strange, not connected numbers... Also, quizes require diving into very specific info from the graph, practically knowing it by heart... which is impossible while in the course.

1. Excellent overview of LCA as promised in the beginning. 2. The deliverables write up after every phase really helped to absorb the concepts. 2. The LCA knowledge model could have been restricted to coverage of the course. It would have been less intimidating. 3. Certain concepts like characterization and classification were rushed, I felt. Great learning experience overall. Thanks.

Difficile de suivre le cours et encore plus de répondre à certaines questions sans avoir le modèle de connaissance de l'ACV sous les yeux en parallèle. Un sous-titrage digne de ce nom serait plus que bienvenu.

The course provided a good overview of LCA. The explanation was very clear, and the the LCA model was very useful in understanding the concepts. I felt that "Interpretation of the model - Part 3" becomes clearer after the sections that come later explaining the different phases of the LCA. Also, if you could upload a picture of the LCA model where we can read the names of all concepts, it would be nice. When we click anywhere we can see clearly; however, I thought it would also be good to see the model as a whole clearly to get a good overall visual picture of the LCA process.

I enjoyed the course as it taps upon the basic topics. The model is comprehensive, well-organized and easy to follow once you take a deep look at it. However, even for an introductory course, I felt it should explain the covered topics with more details and more examples. For instance, the sub-activities in some cases are covered rapidly and because a lot of concepts are just being briefly discussed, you would be lost with the terms without understanding its significance and their interconnections. Also, even though the provided example is thoroughly discussed across the chain of steps of the LCA, I felt I needed another example, maybe in the wrap up section that would demonstrate what have been discussed in all the previous sections and make sure the course taker has fully grasped the concepts. But again good introductory course.

I have some background in LCA. I just wanted to formally to understand the ISO structure. The course provides an overall understanding of the process, and gives a good head start to use while you are conducting the analysis or writing the reports. I am hoping to use the takeaway knowledge model, and I can improve on my understanding and application after using the model. Thanks to the instructor!

The course has artistically and scientifically captured the key messages, tools and an overall approach of LCA, It has also taught the fundamentals for arriving at deliverables at each stage of LCA. This has helped immensely to de-clutter concepts and identify a work flow. Many thanks to Udemy team and Dr Tich for bringing this course. Hoping to see more levels soon!

This course is great for understanding the concept of LCA and ISO 14040. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it to researchers and students who are struggling to find sources for understanding LCA in simple words!
