Ontologies for Business Analysis (Udemy.com)
An introduction to knowledge-based methods for transforming your business into the intelligent enterprise
Created by: Tish Chungoora
Last updated April 2026
What you will learn
- Conceptualise ontologies in the context of business analysis, with a focus on their purpose, importance and the underlying business case for their application
- Understand how to define 'blueprints' for organising enterprise domain knowledge by using the building blocks of ontologies and how they are arranged
- Appreciate the importance of rigour in business modelling, by capturing formal semantics (meaning) and logical axioms for defining business rules
- Become familiar with the Web Ontology Language (OWL) for building structures that have inherently complex relationships

Course Description
Business analysts are expert at capturing what an enterprise does. Ontologies give you the tools to capture what it knows — and make that knowledge computable.
The practice of business analysis has always revolved around modelling the enterprise from multiple perspectives — processes, data flows, functional structures, static architecture and more. These models are valuable. But they share a fundamental limitation: they capture how things look, not what things mean. In a world where organisations need systems that can share knowledge across boundaries, adapt to change and reason over enterprise data intelligently, that gap matters.
Ontologies close that gap. An ontology is a formal, platform-agnostic knowledge representation that captures the meaning of domain concepts — not just their labels — in a way that both humans and machines can understand and reason over. They provide a basis for semantic data exchange and federation across information sources, enable the rapid prototyping of information structures before a line of code is written, and serve as the foundation for building knowledge bases that evolve alongside organisational change. And crucially, building them does not require deep technical or software engineering skills — making ontologies a natural and powerful extension of the business analyst's existing toolkit.
This matters now more than ever. As organisations invest in AI, intelligent decision support and the vision of the self-describing enterprise, ontologies are becoming a critical enabler — providing the structured, semantically rich foundation that makes enterprise knowledge accessible, reusable and computable at scale. Business analysts who understand and apply ontological methods are not just keeping pace with that shift — they are leading it.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to ontologies in the context of business analysis, covering the conceptual background, the justifications for adoption, worked examples and the practical detail you need to start applying ontological thinking within your own business analysis pipeline. The goal is straightforward: to make you a pioneer of applied ontology in your field.
What you will be able to do after this course:
Explain what ontologies are and articulate their value in a business analysis context
Distinguish ontological approaches from conventional modelling tools and understand when and why to apply them
Use ontologies to formally represent domain knowledge that is accurate, reusable and platform-agnostic
Prototype information structures and knowledge models that can be handed directly to software engineers for implementation
Apply ontologies to support semantic data exchange, interoperability and federation across information sources
Position ontological methods within the broader vision of the intelligent, self-describing enterprise
Who this course is for:
This course is designed for business analysts, information architects, systems engineers and knowledge management professionals who want to expand their modelling capabilities into the semantic domain. No prior exposure to ontologies or semantic technologies is required — the course builds the conceptual foundation from the ground up. If you work in business analysis and want to bring a new level of rigour, reusability and intelligence to how enterprise knowledge is captured and represented, this course gives you the tools and the framework to do it.

I really enjoyed this course, a bit challenging at the beginning for someone like me discovering business analysis but the trainer is very competent. The ontology and tools presented provide exactly the answer to many professional topics for which I did not have a satisfactory solution. Thank you Tish Chungoora!

I found the content to be interesting and on the whole very well-structured. However, I sometimes struggled to take it all in. I found the occasional library video sequences unnecessary and distracting. The animations were far more compelling, albeit sometimes with a few decorative lines too many. The text seemed to digress sometimes to the very academic side of things, which is an understandable minor flaw for an academic trying to focus on the basics while there would be so much more to say, but it doesn't help the newbie who is simply trying to get a better tool and stop fastening screws with a pipe wrench. Finally, as I work as a trainer myself: you have a pleasant voice and it is always better to listen to a human being than an AI generated voice. But picture a real audience as you speak. You are describing complex and abstract concepts. Make a little pause and inject a bit of drama, when you have just presented an important concept. Give it some time to sink in. Your delivery is too evenly paced and too uniform for the words to fall into place in the mind of the listener. Imagine telling this live to someone who hears it for the first time, and wait for their eyes to show you that the penny dropped (I am certain you can imagine where that would typically apply).

It is an amazing presentation. The speech, the pace, the visuals, contents... And the accuracy of definitons about what a business analyst role is, the challenges and the benefits ontologies give in order to progress to a Knowledge Architect role is absolutely realistic! I feel identified with many things Tisch said video after video... One of the best Udemy's courses I've ever meet. Congrats!

A good course, although there is a considerable overlap with the course 'Practical Knowledge Modelling: Ontology Development 101' which I did before taking this course. Tish, many thanks for offering this course. It gave me the motivation to actually start developing an ontology for the domain I am working in. I hope it will be a success!

The slides/presentation/protege visual really helps to follow the course and is great to look at. The speaker's voice is very calm/monotone which makes it difficult to stay motivated. I appreciate the deep dive on ontologies but would wish for more concrete examples regarding MDM, enterprise systems; MDA/MDI/SOA; and the link to processes (how to link information flow with the information structured in my ontology). Great ending with the skill set of an knowledge architect

Beginning of course: Seems to be a great match. I am evaluating tools that define and manage ontologies and associated metadata. It is helpful to get a straight forward definitional view on the elements discussed in the field of semantic modeling. End of course By far the best online course that I have taken: great visuals; gentle but engaging pace; subtle redundancy for learning; and a rock star instructor.

Your accent is unique and distracting, but despite this - your course is entertaining. As an experienced, Senior BA, I may actually learn a lot more from this course than any of the other BA courses on here. That is because your concepts are mostly new-ish. I also like how you are teaching, very entertaining and well-done with the effort you put in. The more I listen to your course, the more I like it. I want my wife, who is also a BA to listen to this. We had this exact discussion about the HR categorization of employees and how you would categorize certain fields/tags. I recommend your course for all BA's. As a note to the lecturer, I would have loved to have had solid exercises to practice my understanding. Ontologies (for me) is a hierarchy of things. I know there are many ways to skin a cat, but I would have loved practicing a few "labs". All I have no is an understanding of the concept of ontologies, but no practical, nor theoretical experience VS the theoretical knowledge I have obtained in this course.

The course well explained to know what an ontology is about and what it can be useful, concepts are clear, however, it's incomplete. It does not really explains how to build an ontology, or once you have it how to use it. It's like an introduction. Another thing to make it better: The course is only in english (without subtitles). I would include, at least, english subtitles and if possible, spanish too.

Concise explanations that are well-posed for the target audience (less-technical BA folks); strong graphics that ultimately reinforce the topic at hand (what better way to teach knowledge graphs than using Prezi to build a slide deck formatted as a graph!); continuous reinforcement of learning objectives and motivation.

A solid, clear overview for anyone involved with understanding, describing, and/or automating enterprises. This is an introductory course on knowledge modeling using the more familiar business analysis context. This course is suitable not just for Business Analysts but more of a broadening skill set of many different roles enabling mastery of deeper and broader knowledge as you progress - or as an enterprise progresses - in its path forward. This is my second course with Dr. Chungoora. Both compellingly simple for what is often portrayed as a complex area of knowledge. Well worth taking.
