Learn to create slick UI's as you learn the fundamentals of design such as typography, color theory, design principles.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,340 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in October 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, three-and-a-half-hour introduction to the building blocks of UI design: typography, color theory, design principles, and a short tour of Adobe XD, finishing with a practice project where students design a website for a design agency. The 39 lectures are split into five sections, and the typography block is the longest of the theory parts. It's pitched at complete beginners and at entrepreneurs who need to make their own product look presentable, and the reviews back that up. Just over 30,000 students have enrolled.

Students praise Ahmet Efeolu's plain, friendly delivery. One reviewer says he teaches like a friend, and the homework at the end of each topic gets specific credit for making the ideas stick. Another singles out the typography section, especially the advice on combining fonts, as the part that changed how she works. The complaints are just as consistent. The course was last updated in October 2019, and one recent reviewer questions how useful the Adobe XD section is now that the tool is no longer supported. Others mention an empty resources section, uneven audio in the final section, and a presentation one design graduate called messy.

At free and 3.5 hours, it's a low-risk starting point, and the 4.1 rating from 1,340 reviews is respectable rather than glowing. Next to the Figma courses it sits beside, this one covers less tooling and more theory, which is the right order for someone who has never opened a design app. Treat the XD section as optional and the rest holds up. Worth an afternoon if the goal is learning why designs work before learning which buttons to press.

Best forComplete beginners and founders who want the rules of type, color, and layout before touching a design tool.
Skip it ifYou want to learn Figma, or you need a current tool walkthrough; the Adobe XD section is from 2019 and the app is no longer supported.

Pros

  • Free and only 3.5 hours, so the fundamentals fit in one afternoon
  • Homework at the end of each topic, which reviewers say makes the rules stick
  • Font pairing advice in the typography section drew specific praise from one reviewer
  • Friendly, plain delivery that beginners and even a returning pro found useful

Cons

  • Last updated October 2019; the Adobe XD section is showing its age
  • Reviewers report an empty resources section, so students supply their own project images
  • Audio levels jump around, especially in the practice project section
Ahmet gives us actual ways and homeworks at the end of the topics to apply what we have just learned. Taught it more like a friend than a typical instructor.

This was a good overview for beginners, however I'm not sure how useful the Adobe XD section is now that it is no longer supported. Also the audio really needs to be normalized - especially in section 5 where I would not recommend you listen on headphones unless you enjoy jump scares!

This course has taught me a lot when it comes to basics and what I absolutely love about it is that Ahmet gives us actual ways and homeworks at the end of the topics to apply what we have just learned. Taught it more like a friend than a typical instructor. He shared how he developed his skills and guided us with utmost simplicity through the whole thing.

I really loved the course, it contains many ideas that i did not know before, especially the part where he talks about fonts, I've always had a hard time to combine multiple fonts, thank you so much for the effort, I can't wait to discover more as I go forward in the course.

This course was an eye opener into UX/UI design. Saved lots of time and money just trying to learn something that I should have a keen understanding before I actually learn the entire thing.

By Ivanka van Vuuren on 2/22/2022

I really like this course because it explains the basics of designing very well. It is easy to follow and understand. If one is considering to design things, whether for a job or another reason, this is a very good start of point.

The production quality of this course is poor to say the least. Despite that, some of the insights gain was really good. He needs to invest in quality sound editing and so forth, there are times the voice pitches throughout fluctuates, at times it scared me, good content, but production ends to be on a continuous line

It was Great Tutorial for For Beginners. You have gone through details of the UI designing. Tells us about colors and typography, that was good for starting nd gaining knowledge. Thank YOu :)

Course gives some vary basics of graphics and offers a little tutorial about building a web graphic with xd. I would have gave a 5 star if there was also the material for practising yourself.

By Jae Shin on 4/28/2020

English captions for this course would be tremendously helpful, although I've found watching at a higher speed easier to understand. The course material is very basic (things I already knew intuitively without any experience in design) but I've found the "homework" helpful to do to get my feet wet with Adobe XD. I thought the basics of Adobe XD portion was too basic (can be learned by using the tutorial on the app itself) but may have been more helpful to watch prior to doing the homework assignments. The videos can be cleaned up a bit with a little additional planning or re-recording when Adobe XD is "being buggy" and editing the ends of the video.

Thanks for this course Ahmet, In some part i thing you can explain in simpler and more professional way instead confusing way. Also there are so much simple designs i expect some good designs to learn in this course.
