Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,350 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, free course on building applications for Corda, the blockchain platform pitched at enterprises. Across 44 lectures and about three hours of video, plus 20 articles and 14 assignments, it covers states, contracts, transactions, flows and consensus, then has students complete an IOU CorDapp template by making failing unit tests pass. It is pitched as intermediate, and reviewers agree: it suits working developers, ideally with some Kotlin, who want a quick orientation or a stepping stone toward Corda developer certification rather than a from-scratch coding tutorial.
Students like the structure and the plain explanations of Corda's key concepts, and one Ethereum developer called it a fun exposure to a ledger he had never touched. Austin Moothart and his co-instructors get warm words from people prepping for certification, though the narrator talks fast and the auto captions do him no favors. The sharper complaints are about depth. Several lower-star reviews call it mostly theory that mirrors the Corda docs, say the assignments assume Kotlin even though the code now includes Java sources, and note that solutions come lumped together rather than per assignment. Links to the Corda site have also drifted since 2018.
It is free, so the value question is easy. Next to the Solidity, Web3 and NFT courses in this category it sits closer to the Hyperledger Fabric course: no Ethereum, no tokens, just an enterprise ledger and JVM code. Anyone who needs Corda specifically will get a solid map of the framework in an evening, but should expect to lean on the official documentation and a Kotlin refresher to finish the assignments. The course has not been updated since August 2018, so treat the setup and node instructions as a guide rather than gospel.
Pros
- Free, and short enough to finish in an evening: 3.3 hours of video across 44 lectures
- Test-driven format: 14 assignments have students fix failing unit tests until an IOU CorDapp works
- Reviewers call it well structured, moving cleanly from states and contracts to flows and consensus
- Rated 4.6 by about 1,350 students, the large majority giving four or five stars
Cons
- Not updated since August 2018; links and node instructions no longer match current Corda docs
- Assignments lean on Kotlin, and Java learners say the videos give them no path to follow
- Several reviews call it mostly theory that mirrors the free Corda key-concepts documentation
Good course with examples. The lecture videos were at a quicker pace than comfortable but otherwise a well structured course with a lot of content.
Marked intermediate and that is fair: working Java or Kotlin skills are needed for the assignments, even though the page calls them optional.
What you will learn
- To build and run CorDapps.
- To become a Certified Corda Developer.

This course gave me a very good introduction to Corda and overall description of the framework. It seems to have all that one needs to get started. However, I sometimes had a feeling that I could just read the docs on certain topics. And there were some issues with doing exercises in Java, though Kotlin worked fine.

It did give a complete understanding of corda to a very amatuer person. I am completely satisfied with this course. I have a small suggestion, for the last assignment it would have been better if there was a demo at the end

Really good introduction, although some of the material was incorrect and required a bit of fiddling to fix (such as the list of API calls available when you run up the nodes - currency=GBP instead of cy=GBP in the /web/ui list of available endpoints).

I've watched several "bootcamps" and other trainings to prepare for Corda certifications, and I have NOTHING but praise for these instructors and course author. Well done. I didn't feel ready to pass the tests without outside knowledge (some understanding of programming) but this course made more and more sense once that outside material was a little better absorbed. Brilliant, gentlemen.

Yes, this course is a good match for me! I manage a blockchain project on Ethereum and have heard about Corda several times, so I decided to go ahead with this. Congrats for the course and thank you so much!!! By the way, I'd like that the instructors help me out. I await their contact!

Great course to start learning about corda, very hands on and lets you think a lot with the excercices to understand what you are doing. Also you can optionaly extend the course to finish the app beyon the examples. Great unit testing methodology to enter your code.

The course provided concise yet comprehensive introduction to Corda development and explained most of the core Corda concepts. I feel like after taking this course I will be navigate through existing CorDapps. To create and deploy one on my own however, more extensive research will be necessary.

Very informative!! I'm satisfied with the overall learning in this course. Maybe lectures on how to do the last assignment could have been taught in more detail earlier in the course or students be given more instructor examples for the assignment. Also, the UK origin instructor's clarity of speech could be improved and his orating speed was rather fast. Changing the speed of the video to 0.75x doesn't work as well for sound quality.

This is a real good course. More than this, is a challenge. Any concept is completed with a practical exercise, which helps you fully understand the way corda works. To be a free course, this is really amazing. Fully recommended!!!

The solutions material was not there, so had to ask for it. I am new to Corda and Kotlin so the assignment exercises were very hard. I had to do a lot of searching on how to write the code. Would help if it showed how to do the assignments instead just ok here you go do it. Feel like it assumes you know all the syntax and components already.
