Course Description

ISO 19011 is the international standard for auditing management systems — the guidance that defines how audits of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001 and every other management system standard are planned, conducted and reported. This course explains its principles, methods and practices in full.

The course is fully updated to ISO 19011:2026, the latest edition of the standard, including its expanded guidance on remote auditing methods. It serves beginners starting a career in management system auditing, internal auditors building or refreshing their skills, and experienced auditors who want to understand the changes introduced by the 2026 edition.

Course structure

  • Foundations of auditing — concepts, definitions and standards; the principles of management system auditing; the types of audits (first-party/internal, second-party and third-party/certification audits); the audit programme; risk-based thinking applied to auditing; and audit objectives, scope and criteria

  • The audit process, step by step — audit planning; the opening and closing meetings; methods for collecting audit evidence; conducting interviews; auditing top management; auditing compliance; sampling; remote and hybrid auditing; generating audit findings and conclusions; the audit report; and follow-up activities

  • Auditor competence and behaviour — the knowledge, skills and personal attributes expected of auditors; how to become a management system auditor; and the additional competence required of the audit team leader (lead auditor)

  • Certification and accreditation — how the management system certification process works; the audits performed for certification (initial, surveillance and recertification audits); and the difference between certification and accreditation

Who this course is for

  • Beginners starting a career in management system auditing

  • Internal auditors — ISO 19011 is the standard internal audit programmes for ISO management systems are built on

  • Auditors preparing for lead auditor roles and certification audit work

  • Experienced auditors updating their knowledge to the 2026 edition of ISO 19011

  • Quality, environmental, health & safety and information security professionals who are audited and want to understand how auditors work

The course is easy to follow, to the point, and built around clear examples, with a quiz at the end to test what you have learned. Whether you are starting out or updating your competence, it gives you the complete picture of management system auditing — fully aligned with ISO 19011:2026.

Who am I?
I’ve been working in the field of standards, auditing, and certification since the early 2000s. Over the years, I’ve contributed to hundreds of projects across various industries and disciplines. Today, I work with RIGCERT, an accredited certification body based in Europe.

What do I do?
I translate the knowledge and best practices from international standards and recognized compliance frameworks into clear, practical language — to help individuals and organizations improve.

How do I teach?

I design and record every course myself. You will be learning from a human instructor with real-world auditing experience — not from AI-generated content. Since launching my first course in 2016, my focus has always been on extracting the core ideas from complex subjects and delivering them in a clear, concise format. I only build and publish courses that I myself would take.

What are my interests?
My work spans quality management, information security, data protection and privacy, artificial intelligence governance, risk management, business continuity, occupational health and safety, environmental management, energy management, compliance, food safety, and others.

An excellent, practical course on ISO 19011 auditing. The role-play exercise on handling a difficult interviewee was especially valuable and realistic, and combined with clear quiz questions on audit terminology and nonconformity management, it makes for an engaging and highly useful training. Highly recommended.

By Anastasiia Drankivska on 6/19/2026

Great course! Every aspect of the standard was covered throughout the course. Only one recomendation - please update the certificate name to the new version of the standard. Thank you!

Absolutely the best explanation I've come across! The content was incredibly clear. I highly hope you develop a follow-up course covering API Q1 next!

By Nicola Macpherson on 5/21/2026

This course was great, the presentation was clear and the presenter added additional information in a clear and concise way. My only comment would be the continued reference of the auditor as a "he", it's 2026. Women make up 52% of the global population and 47% of the global workforce.

By Agnes Bihari on 1/18/2026

Highly recommended insightful course ideal for both beginners and experts looking for refreshment course. Up-to-date including climate change considerations. Engaging narration, illustrative images and infographics, well-structured contents, consistent presentation, interactive video edition, and hands-on methodology with practical downloadable resources. Thank you!
