Cybersecurity Management with ISO/IEC 27001 (Udemy.com)
Design and run a cybersecurity program — threats, controls, risk assessment and incident response, guided by ISO 27001

Our take
Based on the ratings of 9,815 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Cristian Vlad Lupa's course is a four-hour survey of cybersecurity management, framed by ISO/IEC 27001. It has 48 lectures in a single section, moving from threats, classification and risk assessment through access control, cryptography, malware, supplier risk, incident response and compliance. The instructor has worked in standards, auditing and certification since the early 2000s, and the syllabus leans toward policy and process rather than tools. It suits managers and IT staff who want the whole picture, not specialists chasing depth.
Reviewers call it clear, well structured and easy to follow, with videos of a manageable length and resource documents for nearly every section. One reader with 14 years as an ISSM said it updated them on what a cybersecurity manager should watch for. The complaints are few but pointed. One wanted more detail on each topic, and one found it too basic for audit-level compliance. Another felt it reads more like a general security management course than a close walk through the ISO 27001 chapters and controls. The cryptography section confused at least one student.
Of about 9,800 ratings, roughly 90 percent are four or five stars, and only about 115 are one or two. The course was last updated in July 2026, so it is current, and more than 22,000 students have taken it. At four hours it is quick, and there is just one quiz at the end, so retention is on you. Treat it as a first pass at the field, then add a dedicated ISO 27001 implementation or auditor course if certification work is the goal.
Pros
- Videos run a manageable length and cover threats, risk, access control, crypto and incident response
- Resource documents come with nearly every section, according to reviewers
- Taught by a certification auditor whom students praise for making dense material easy to follow
- Updated July 2026, with case studies like Target, Barings Bank and Snowden
Cons
- Only one quiz, at the very end, and all 48 lectures sit in a single section
- Reads like a general security course, not a clause-by-clause ISO 27001 guide
- One reviewer found it basic, and the cryptography part confused another student
The course is well structured, providing useful information presented in an understandable and straightforward way.
Labeled All Levels, but it assumes basic IT and security familiarity, so total beginners may need to pause and look things up.

Course Description
This course teaches the foundations of cybersecurity management through the lens of ISO/IEC 27001, the leading international standard for information security. You will learn the concepts, principles and controls an organization needs to design and run a cybersecurity program: the typical security threats facing different activities and processes, and the recommended controls to protect against them.
Course structure
Foundations — cyberspace and cybersecurity defined; confidentiality, integrity, authentication and non-repudiation as critical elements of any security system
Information classification — schemes, levels and labelling
Risk management — threats, vulnerabilities, risk assessment (quantitative and qualitative methods), and the options for treating security risks
Organizing security — top management support, segregation of duties, and human resources security from screening and contractual requirements through the disciplinary process to termination and change of employment
Devices and media — mobile device policies including BYOD (bring your own device) and COPE (company owned, personally enabled), and the rules for removable media
Access control and authentication — managing access rights and privileges so they don't become security breaches; password management, common password attacks and their controls
Cryptography — core concepts, digital signatures and public key infrastructure (PKI), plus the most common cryptographic attacks (brute force, rainbow tables, birthday attacks) and how to defend against them
Attacks and malware — viruses, worms, trojans, logic bombs, spyware and adware, with a detailed presentation of ransomware; denial-of-service attacks; social engineering and phishing
Operational security — physical and equipment security, backups, change management, capacity management, email security, network security principles and controls, wireless attacks and their prevention, and security in development processes
Suppliers and third parties — the risks associated with suppliers' access to your information assets
Incident management and continuity — managing cybersecurity incidents from detection to closure and root cause analysis; business continuity and preparing for crisis situations
Compliance — the compliance requirements every organization must respect
Learning from real cases
The concepts are illustrated with easy-to-follow explanations, examples and case studies — including the Barings Bank collapse, the Target security breach and Edward Snowden — plus a quiz at the end to test what you've learned.
Who this course is for
IT professionals moving into cybersecurity or security management roles
Managers and business owners who need to understand how to protect their organization
Professionals supporting an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system from the technical side
Students and career-changers building cybersecurity fundamentals

Who am I?
I’ve been working in the field of standards, auditing, and certification since the early 2000s. Over the years, I’ve contributed to hundreds of projects across various industries and disciplines. Today, I work with RIGCERT, an accredited certification body based in Europe.
What do I do?
I translate the knowledge and best practices from international standards and recognized compliance frameworks into clear, practical language — to help individuals and organizations improve.
How do I teach?
I design and record every course myself. You will be learning from a human instructor with real-world auditing experience — not from AI-generated content. This course provided a lot of great and pertinent information about cybersecurity that will likely be relevant for years to come. Despite the density of the material, Cristian Vlad Lupa communicated the material very well, and each video was a reasonable, manageable length. More quizzes besides the one at the end could have been included between series of videos to make some of the key components of each lesson stick better, and the videos could have been divided into other sections besides "Introduction". Otherwise, the course was insightful, and I'm glad I took it.

Content is good but wished the it would be more directly connected to the ISO standards different chapters and controls. As it is now it feels more like a general ISMS course, not specifically ISO27001.

This course presents the cyber security information in a clear and concise manner, but in a practical way as well. This course offered some insights on issues to think about in your Cyber Security Role.

Based on the title, I was hoping for some more details about how to actually implement ISO 27001 compliant policies and procedures. I feel like this is more "intro to cybersecurity concepts" than "apply the requirements for a cybersecurity program". Still, it's a great overview of the concepts, and everything was explained very clearly, with interesting examples along the way.

yes it was, since i am also part of a security management team and using companies laptop. Learning a lot about Cypher and all the necessary steps in order to maintain order in the organization. Also very interesting to find out that even our cellphone can be use to bridge companies data.

All the information is relevant and covers the subject well. Have an MSc in computer networking and cyber security and use such training as a reminder of the various aspects of ISO 127001 which are easy to forget if not used daly
