Course Description

Flatters are the unsung heroes of comic book coloring!

Flatting is the first step when coloring as a comic book colorist. Most professional colorists hire someone called a flatter to separate the elements on the pages into colors. The colorist can then select those colors with the Magic Wand Tool in Photoshop to quickly change and edit those colors!

Flatting is more of technical process than a creative one. The colors a flatter chooses aren't really important, but the work requires attention to detail in order to be successful. Good, reliable, and flat flatters are always in demand!

In this course, you'll learn how to use the Lasso Tool, Bucket Tool, and Magic Wand to properly flat comic book pages!

Check out this free course to learn about it!

Hi! I have been working professionally as a comic book colorist since 2011 and teaching digital coloring online on YouTube since 2013.

I learned about coloring the hard way early on, and I do my best to make sure that no one else has to take the same route I did! I'm still always learning new things and try to bring you guys along with me.

As of 2020, I've colored over a hundred books for publishers such as DC, Image, Vault, Dynamite, Chaos, Top Cow, IDW, Oni, and many others.

This was a simple and quick to understand course about Flatting. I am attending one of his classes and he talked about this. I wanted to get a more in depth look and this was just right. He does an excellent job explaining and it helps out a lot when he does the lesson. Thanks to him, I am actually wanting to be a flatter for colorist. Check it out!

I've had this course in my queue forever, and I'm just now getting to it because I was not ready to learn or even understand the importance of flatting in my journey of learning to produce visual artwork. Now that I'm there (sort of), I can fully appreciate the importance of this skill even in more traditional painting styles. Kurt does an excellent job of explaining his method succinctly. I definitely recommend this course, and I'm considering taking some of his other courses as well. Thanks!

Seguirò il consiglio dell'autore e compro "Pro's Guide to Digital Comic Book Coloring"

The Flatting course start with the basic tools, Lasso, Wand, and Bucket and demonstrates how to use them effectively. I have used these tools countless times so viewed the first section as a courteousy. This showed I have been using these tools 95% under there capabilities!! The course finishes with flatting actual comic book panels and gave me the knowledge to move on to my on projects. This course IS UNDER PRICED!! The contents should be given a price tag even just to give revenue back to the Demonstrator..As a started £2 gbp.

This course was great. I think it's just a free section of one of his other courses but gives you the basic info you need to start coloring your comics by flatting. I did get confused on how his selections were working when reselecting but watching it again helped me understand more clearly. Also he goes by a little quick on the tool setting part which is key. I had both my Paint bucket and Magic Wand tool set up wrong (not like his) and it wasn't getting me what he was getting so make sure to pay attention during the quick parts when he discusses this.

I was hoping that he would take a "start to finish" approach from importing the black line art to putting it on its own layer than to flatting the image. But this course was free so maybe that was all he wanted to put out there.

I did some flatting for a professional colorist in San Diego and now I understand why I just wasn't quick enough to suit her ... wow! So many little tricks that just make sense if you want to go quicker and be absolutely sure to flat correctly. Great course; shouldn't be free, but it is!! I will keep this in my back pocket as I practice my flatting and attempt to re-enter the market. Great job, Senor K. Michael Russell.

Great intro to Flatting from someone with experience as a professional colorist. I would give it 5 stars, but I was hoping to learn a bit more about the do's and don'ts of flatting. Maybe explain how much detail should be colored in on heavily detailed work, or what to do when background objects/characters are half drawn, or what should be color grouped on a page with multiple similar characters or objects. Otherwise, this course goes beyond flatting to give you practical experience in photoshop that you can use pretty much anywhere. That is worth it on its own.

Nice tutorial on flatting. It's easy to follow and covers the way to use the lasso tool, bucket, layers and magic wand to do the flatting of the page (that is, blocking the base colors in each of the different parts of the drawing). It also gives a few tips and common pitfalls. Note that it doesn't include how to choose the colors (the course centers around flatting, and the colorist would replace them later). I would certainly recommend this course.

Highly recommended! Very interesting. He did not know this artistic side; I experimented, to enter the art of the world of games. I was very interested in learning real, and with quality; it is very rare to find something so well stuffed with information and teachings; I am very happy to have found this course! Now I'm going to have to continue with his other course; and it will be now!
