Course Description
In this course, I'm going to teach you how to use the ggplot2 package of R to draw amazing charts that are able to communicate what your data has to say in the most polished, professional way.
My name is Clara and I am a Complex Systems researcher and Data Visualization professor at the University.
Currently, ggplot2 is the best, most powerful tool for building professional graphics. First, because this is a package available in R, which is one of the most used programming languages for Data Science and related fields. So, it is very convenient to be able to produce graphics in the same environment where you already do all of your calculations. Second, because it is the most flexible tool to build graphs. So, even if you don't use R for your analyses, it is worth it to use ggplot2 to draw your plots, because there's no other tool that will give you the results that you can achieve using ggplot2.
Right now, the top agencies for Data Visualization are using ggplot2 to present their data. But still, ggplot2 is a tool that not everybody knows how to use, because of its long learning curve. Because of this, some people turn to other tools, like for example, Microsoft Excel, a tool that is not genuinely made for Data Visualization purposes. So, why don't you take the amazing opportunity of learning ggplot2 now and standing out from the crowd?
When I started learning ggplot2 some years ago, I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of functions and parameters, and also, I had never used R at the time. But I knew there wasn't any other comparable tool out there. So, I decided to learn it from the grounds, which took me a while! Of course you can watch some tutorials, and learn how to do certain kinds of plots, but I soon realized this wasn't enough to use ggplot in an independent, confindent manner. This course that I'm offering to you today is the course that I wished had existed when I was learning ggplot2. It would have saved me hours and hours of reading books, manuals, the documentation, and endless trial and error.
In this course I've followed a methodology that has proven to work over the years with my students at the University, which is: to truly master ggplot2 you need to learn its core: the grammar of graphics. But, learning this alone might be a little tough, so I've created a series of lessons that first cover a certain part of the grammar, and then we move on to learning how to draw particular plots. Both of these types of lessons are fully hands-on, so you won't be bored one second! Using this method, I've had great success with students that had never used R before, R beginners, and advanced R users.
I really encourage you to make the decision of starting to learn ggplot2, it'll be a skill that you'll use for years to come and which will make a great difference in your career. I promise you won't regret it. Actually, this is what my students say: "This is the best course on R that I have done (M.G)", "This is a perfect course, might be the best I've seen in a long time (A.M)", "[I thought] that it was impossible for me to learn ggplot2 but this course showed me otherwise (M.N)". Take their advice and join us!
*This course covers the ggplot2 3.3 version (the latest release).

Hi, I'm Clara!
I'm a Computer Scientist by training, a Complex Systems researcher by choice and a Data Visualization specialist by passion.
Over the many years of work in my career as a scientist, I've had to face the challenge of presenting very complex data in an understandable, easy and beautiful manner. In science, it is crucial to present your data in a way that it is understood, because the science behind it is often complicated enough, right?
So in my journey of learning how to communicate data in the most effective way, I had to learn the principles of human perception, the do's and don'ts of graphical design, the rules of graphical integrity and excellence... And then I had to choose what's the most appropriate tool to do the job: it had to be a powerful, yet flexible tool, and after trying many different plotting systems in many different programming languages, I finally commited to ggplot2. It took me a while to master all of it, but after doing it I found it was too good for me not to share it with the world.
So here I am, in Udemy, helping you become a better Data Visualization professional with my courses. See you around!

I completed the entire course and it was 100% worth it. Very well structured, in-depth, and with lots of helpful examples. I also appreciate that Clara highlights common mistakes and explains why things don't go as planned when they don't. I had some experience with R prior to this course, but I think it is very accessible for beginners. Fantastic course which immediately elevated my reports. Thank you, Clara!

I work as a researcher and need to summarize my observations in figures and plots. I have been using ggplot2 for some time, but for many small details, I was taking help from Google, and this was taking a lot of my time. I am really happy that I took this course so that now I have a clear picture of ggplot2 grammar in my mind, which is helping me a lot in my day-to-day research work and increasing my efficiency by saving my time. Thanks alot!

There are too few hands-on exercises. In general, coding is not a spectator thing, and practising is the best way to learn. At least, some pointers to exercises with solutions would have been useful.

Overall this course is excellent. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone wanting to use ggplot. I mainly use pandas rather than R and I've been able to apply all my learning using the plotnine library with pandas. I think it might give a broader audience if this was made clear up front that you don't have to learn R to use ggplot and maybe there was a lesson at the end on the few minor differences / how to get started with plotnine etc.

An awesome course for data visualization. It teaches the grammar of graphics so that in the end you will be able to create any plot you want. The point is that you have to understand the logic behind the different layers in ggplot2. My next step is to read Hadley Wickhams book, which Clara recommends, in order to consolidate my knowledge. Thank you so much for this deep diving and valuable course.

Hi, This course was very informative. However, I have a strong suggestion that can make this course even better. Since there are a lot of things and multiple ways of doing one thing, it would be great if the instructor could summarize every section once it is done and highlight the major elements that is used more frequently over others. Giving an overall summary at the end in a schematic manner again would be very helpful to avoid confusions among learners.

ITs nice and clear, i dont know how we could remember each parameter especially for a beginner. i am just waiting to do the exercise by myself to practice and find if it goes well. what i hope is if this tutorial is available after the completion of this study or can we get a manual of this chapter wise details so that we will be able to independently handle. Excellent Coach

Excellent course! The instructor was very knowledgeable and provided clear explanations and demonstrations of the code throughout. The course design was well-thought out and presented in a methodical manner. I wouldn't have minded a few more practice exercises in the course, especially in the section on scales since it was the longest.

Very well thought out, paced and constructed course really taking you from basics to independence. Examples are excellent and lecturer's content delivery is perfect. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in using ggplot. My only suggestion would be to have a downloadable course outline with basics of how arguments are constructed (or lecture notes). It would be a useful reference for me especially for things I don't use often.

Firstly, I thank Clara, the instructor of this course for making this course. Amount of resources available on the internet made me think that it was impossible for me to learn ggplot2 but this course showed me otherwise. Instructor actually knows what she is teaching. She breaks down, even the complicated concepts into chunks which you could easily understand. Instructor gives so many explanations as to why certain lines of codes work the way they should. Instructor takes you from the very basic to the complicated parts of ggplot by slowly building the understanding of the "grammar" behind ggplot. Presentation of the course contents was beyond my expectations. Convenient to follow and nice slides without overwhelming information. Importantly, how proficient am I in ggplot, now? I was a little familiar with ggplot before enrolling to this course, but I didn't have an understanding on how they worked. I blindly copied stackoverflow answers to get my desired outcome. But now, I believe I am confident enough to plot complicated plots without googling or referring to stackoverflow. With some more practice, I can even become a stackoverflow contributor in the ggplot2 space. If you are looking to get started with ggplot, this is the best course you can pick. Thank you, Tip: If you are planning to take this course (I'd highly recommend you to take it, if you want to learn ggplot2), make sure you write down the contents you see in the slide. It would come in handy.
