This is an excellent course. Ranga explains these topics in a very clear way, and with good examples. The course is quite comprehensive, and I feel much more comfortable in these programming areas now that I have completed the course. I think it will be helpful if you have a basic understanding of SQL and relational databases, but advanced knowledge is not required. Many topics in JPA and Hibernate are explained in the course partly by showing the SQL statements that are generated by Hibernate, so understanding basic SQL really helps. (I had only simple experience with JPA and Hibernate before this course, but I have worked with SQL Server in C# for many years, and I have used Java for about three years now.) Also, although the instructor uses Eclipse, I used IntelliJ with no difficulty (I am familiar with Spring development using IntelliJ). If you take the course, be sure to complete it - after all the good topics in the main part of the course, the final modules on caching, performance tuning and other development tips were very useful. I do think a few more complicated entity persistence examples could be added to the course, and using asserts in the JUnit tests instead of just logging and debugging would be better.
